[Maine-birds] Pine Grosbeaks still around--S.P.

10 Pine Grosbeaks were feeding in the trees in front of the Christmas
Tree Shops near the Maine Mall this afternoon. A check of Southborough
Blvd. across the street didn't produce any birds but the fruit trees
still have fruit on them so I'm still hoping for BOWAs.

Re: [Maine-birds] Canvasback in Millcreek, South Portland, Maine

I wanted to echo Joe's message. I also saw a (the) Canvasback from
Hannaford in South Portland. The bird I saw had a grayish body
(female or immature bird?).

I was also able to pick out two Iceland Gulls from the large group
there. Has anyone seen a Glaucous Gull there lately?

[Maine-birds] Canvasback in Millcreek, South Portland, Maine

This morning, I saw my first Canvasback !! I know it is not a huge deal but I am trying to rack up as many birds as I can. I spotted it near the Hannaford Supermarket where it was surrounded by many Red Breasted Mergansers, and many different species of gulls including many adult Great Black Back Gulls.

[Maine-birds] 7 Bald Eagles Auburn

Hello All,

Yesterday along North River Road in Auburn I observed 7 Bald Eagles.  2 were at a nest and the rest were sub-adult birds along the river.

This may have explained the relatively low number of ducks and gulls.

Interesting to me is the relationship between prey and predator.  How do the ducks and gulls determine when it is time to take off when an eagle is nearby?  A drake Common Merganser was near one of the eagles that was perched fairly low in a tree along the river's edge.  The merg must have read the eagle's body language, in some way calculated the eagle's height and estimated acceleration rate and determined that its take-off speed from the water was not sufficient to escape capture and that the best strategy was to stay on the surface, keep an eye on the eagle, swiim upstream and dive only when necessary.

One of our list members alerted me to a diving ducks vulnerabiity to eagle attack while underwater.

The mergansers approach to the situation seemed the best available given the situation it was in.  Or am I crediting the merg with too much "intelligence".

Happy birding,
Dan Nickerson Freeport

[Maine-birds] New Sweden/Caribou town line: Bald eagles

Yesterday I was driving down Plante Road in Caribou (despite the different names it exactly the same road as East Road in New Sweden and simply changes identities at the towns' limits) and saw what I thought was a Bald eagle and large raven fly across the road.  It was too quick for a good ID and I didn't spot them again.

Today in a similar location my son, granddaughter and I definitely saw a Bald eagle both in a hardwood of some sort and then fly across the road to perch at the top of a tall pine tree.  There is a trapper who runs a line along the woods and fields close by.

My 3-yo granddaughter said, "He looks mad".

My son said he saw two there a couple of days ago. I know Bald eagles aren't rare, but I'd never seen one so close before.

Six CANVASBACKS continue in the Presumpscot River, visible from the Route 9 bridge in Falmouth. These birds can also be seen at a distance from the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center.

A LARK SPARROW continued as of the 22nd from the Greenbelt Trail near the Cape Elizabeth High School. The bird is often seen coming to the feeder at the mint green house but has also been seen at a feeder next to the neighboring brown house.

The 'OREGON' DARK-EYED JUNCO coming to feeders in Cumberland continued on the 23rd and 24th.

Midcoast

A BELTED KINGFISHER continued near the Rogers Neck Bridge in Phippsburg on the 19th.

Penobscot Bay

A flock of 102 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were reported from a home on Kaler Street in Winterport on the 18th. A BALTIMORE ORIOLE has also been overwintering at this location.

Northern Maine

A NORTHERN HAWK OWL continued this week in Houlton. The bird has been seen a short distance down Access Road near York's car dealership.

[Maine-birds] Water St - Hint

A few people missed the ring-necked duck and the barrows.  They were spending a little time on the opposite side of the island (Jubilee Park) from Water St.

When you come down water street, on the left hand side is a parking lot with a view of the left hand side of the island.  So essentially you can view the side that would be visible from the train station area.

I just bumped into Don Thompson on my way back from lunch and we enjoyed the ring-necked preening on the ice and the  Barrows and a CoGo in the river.

Cheers,
Chuck

Re: [Maine-birds] King Eider

If anyone has it would be great to know. I'm hoping to jump out of work and go straight for the King Eider before this next bout of winter weather sets in. So any current day sightings would be very helpful. Thanks!

[Maine-birds] Saco Update

Barrow's Goldeneye Drake continues as does the Ring-Necked Duck.  Several CoGos today too, but no Common Merganser.  A Juvenile Cooper's Hawk was in the trees on the river bank near the parking area for my building and made a very gull like call.

Also absent today was the Great Cormorant.

[Maine-birds] Northern bird flocks in Peru (Maine)

Just drove down River Road in Peru (a dead end road along the Androscoggin.) In and along the cornfields I observed a flock of 24 Am tree sparrows, then 30 snow buntings and wrapped up the 2-mile cruise with a larger group of (50+) redpolls. Also (not to be outdone) 25 turkeys and 10 crows getting the final calories out of the dried up cornstalks.

[Maine-birds] Varied Thrush continues in Lincolnville

On Friday, I ran into the friends who reported the Varied Thrush in their Lincolnville yard earlier this winter, and they tell me the bird is still coming to their yard. They say it hangs out with a flock of Blue Jays, and is enjoying the mealworms they provide. They've been trying to get photos but all they have are iPhones.

[Maine-birds] Mothpolls

With today's snow, feeder activity was frenzied, large flights of Redpolls materialized out of snowy skies in rapid, dizzying descents, mobbing feeders, reminiscent big gray moths fluttering about a summer streetlamp, only to evaporate in sudden explosive exits, repeating itself all day long. Others darted in and out to grab a bite but, today, Mothpolls ruled.

[Maine-birds] Arrival Date Project

Hello,

As many of you know, I have been coordinating a project to document the first arrival of migratory breeding birds across the state of
Maine for the past 19 years.  Well over 200 birders from all around the state have contributed data.  We have learned much about the nature of Maine bird migration from this citizen-science project.  The data also have provided insight into the impacts of climate change on our bird fauna.  You can download copies of research papers on the data at http://web.colby.edu/whwilson/publications/

I recently mailed out 2013 datasheets to all birders that contributed data for 2012 along with the summary for the 2012 migration.

If you have not participated, I hope you will consider doing so in this landmark 20th year of the project.  All I ask is that you record the first date you see any of about 140 migratory breeding birds in your part of the state.  If you would like to participate, send me an e-mail and I will put a set of datasheets in the mail for you.  I can also send the datasheets electronically as a Word file.

Best wishes,

Herb

[Maine-birds] Re:(Maine Birds) Mount Desert Island Birds: Barred Owl Calling FOY

After a long silence here at Three Pines Bird Sanctuary a Barred Owl was vocalizing very near to the house at 9:40 PM.  This is the first I have heard here this year.  Aslo I started tapping Maple Trees a couple of days ago and already have collected some sap.  Sap running and Barred Owls calling..... some hope that the Earth is tilting in the spring direction.

Right as darkness fell over Winterport, I looked up and saw 10 Great Blue Herons flying over Steamboat Market then over the Penobscot River.  My jaw dropped open and all I could say was WOW!  The parking lot was crowded and most people didn't know what kind of birds they were, but once they saw my reaction, they looked up and all started grinning.  :)  Future birders?  Happy Birding, Sue

So for those as directionally challenged as I am, try this: set your GPS for 78 Scott Dyer Road in Cape Elizabeth, and turn into the Village Crossing facility and park there. Walk through the back of the property and head for the marsh, which you can see from beside the building. Before you get to the marsh you will find the trail. Turn left and the mint green house is less than 100 yards along the trail.

It's worth finding this place, because it looks like it would be a great place to go birding in Spring and Fall - marsh, shrubs, tall trees, feeders.... great!

Bonus: Yesterday the two gas stations in Cape Elizabeth had regular gas going for $3.59 a gallon.

Thanks Derek for the tip on the mint green house; we never would have found the sparrow otherwise.

[Maine-birds] THREE life birds today

Hi all!

With amazing help from this group and especially Doug Hitchcox and Joe
Shaw I was able to get three life birds today.

1. Great Cormorant off of 7th street in Biddeford. (THANKS FOR THE
GREAT DIRECTIONS DOUG)
2. KING EIDER with great directions from Doug and others, and a good
eye from Joe who we ran into who was as excited as we were to find this
gorgeous bird.

After failing to find even where we were supposed to be looking for the
northern shrike and the lark sparrow, we gave up and went back to
Biddeford after Doug's posting about the SNOWY OWL on Woods Island.

Loved exploring new birding options.

Really bummed about the shrike though. That would have been another
life bird. If anyone sees one or knows where I should be looking in the
seacoast York or Rockingham counties, please let me know.

Happy birding,
Jess

[Maine-birds] Snowy Owls - Biddeford, 2/23

Hey everyone:

There are currently TWO Snowy Owls sitting on Wood Island. One very dark speckled bird siting on the chimney near the lighthouse and another much whiter bird on the rocks about 1/3 of the way across the island from the light. Certainly not that unusual in Maine right now but nice to have two birds for comparison.

Wood Island is visible from the tip of East Point Sanctuary located at the end of Lester B Orcutt Blvd in Biddeford.

Good birding,

[Maine-birds] King Eider at Pine Point

I just left the Pine Point Lobster Co-op in Scarborough this morning where the drake King Eider was with a raft of Common Eiders. When I got there, the raft was 100 yards west of the pier and gradually drifted closer to the pier. They were heading away from the pier and upstream a little when I left.

[Maine-birds] Re: Acadia National Park Website and the Ist Field Guide to the Birds of Mount Desert Island and Hancock County (Original)

Hello Seth,

Have seen some of the website for ANP and wanted to pass along the 1st Field Guide to the Birds of Mount Desert Island and Hancock County first published in 1997 for Warblers and Wildflowers Festival on Mount Desert Island.  In 2008 we changed the name to Acadia Birding Festival (May 30 – June 2, 2013) ,  and continue to educate birders about Mount Desert Island and Gulf of Maine Birds.  ANP has been an important Partner over the years and we look forward to another successful collaboration this spring.

That Birding in Acadia and Mount Desert Island  has become so popular has taken many hours of dedication and patience by the dedicated  professionals of Acadia Birding Festival.  We look forward to future collaborations.

[Maine-birds] Mo' Shrikes

Seems maybe a bit of an up-tic of shrikes lately among readers of this list.  Had 2 on the 19th (Alliquippa, Phippsburg and Highlands Rd, Brunswick).  Then today, coming home from the 'Loaf, had 2 more on Rt 8.  One corner of Pine Tree Rd in Smithfield, one corner of Rt 27 in Belgrade.

Our first large flock of Robins this year were in our holly bush.  Large flock of 20 plus birds. Seems a bit early!

A flock of two dozen American Robins arrived this morning in the backyard, the first of the year except for three early arrivers who huddled in a lilac tree throughout the snow storm last week.  The robins drew the attention of a Sharp-shinned Hawk, which drove them off.

[Maine-birds] Roughleg

The rough legged hawk was on Ram Island this morning 2-22. I went through Crescent Beach S.P. and took the path to the right which leads a brushy field. I followed that until I reached the shore line with clear views of the Island. This is much closer than Kettle cove and you can see more of the Island. The bird seemed to favor the right side near a house/garage looking building. If you do choose this view point the path starts on the right just after you pass ticket booth. I would also suggest creepers if you have them. The path was very icy. Leon

Re: [Maine-birds] Seminar by Dan Klem

On Fri, Feb 22, 2013 at 11:58 AM, Herb Wilson <whwilson@colby.edu> wrote:
Hello all,

I want to alert everyone to a talk next Friday, March 1 at Colby by Prof. Dan Klem of Muhlenberg College.  Dan is the pre-eminent  expert on avian collisions with windows and buildings.  All are welcome to attend.  I  pasted in the details below.

Herb

Friday, March 1st at 1:00 PM in Olin 1, Colby College

Title:   Avian mortality at windows: fatal impacts that are an important environmental issue for birds and people.

Speaker: Daniel Klem, Jr., Professor of Biology, and Sarkis Acopian Professor of Ornithology and Conservation Biology, Acopian Center for Ornithology, Department of Biology, Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pennsylvania 18104-5586 USA

ABSTRACT. – Except for habitat destruction, a vast and growing amount of evidence supports the claim that collisions with sheet glass and plastic in residential, commercial, and educational buildings cause the deaths of more birds than any other human-associated avian mortality factor. The toll on bird populations is estimated in the billions worldwide. Conservation, ethical, and legal reasons justify preventing these unintended and unwanted fatalities that responsible human action can minimally mitigate and ideally eliminate. The speaker will provide an overview on this compelling environmental topic having implications for academic disciplines that include: among others, architecture and engineering, biology (especially conservation, ecology, and environmental science), business and economics, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology. Moreover, the current state of knowledge and the most effective means of preventing bird-window collisions will be presented.
