[Maine-birds] Gilsland Farm Birdwalk

Hello everyone:

No one at Gilsland Farm would have tried birding at 7 this morning but by 7:20 the rain had passed and the birds did not disappoint:

At the pond, a young Green Heron entertained us by running around on the vegetation and catching frogs. Presumably the same American Bittern that has been seen for a couple weeks was still there this morning, sitting out in the rain and hardly moving during our stop.

There were at least three young Cooper's Hawks in the west meadow. These birds were constantly calling and chasing each other around; they are presumably from a nest somewhere southeast of the west meadow blind. It was also great to see a few Atlantic Sturgeon breaching as we walked along the edge of the river.

Shorebirds remain abundant on the mudflats, especially from the north meadow. Similar to the counts Noah had a few days ago, there were at least 1000 Semipalmated Sandpipers. Semipalmated Plovers slightly outnumbered Black-bellied Plovers and surprisingly only one Greater Yellowlegs joined the mix.

Here is a complete checklist from the day: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S14882174

Good birding,
