[Maine-birds] In the neighborhood of the MEW GULL

Derek Lovitch and I birded around Thomaston and South Thomaston this morning. We located the MEW GULL, as noted earlier, just before 8:00 AM--it was the first gull Derek looked at. It hung out atop the basketball hoop in the playground in front of Lura Libby Elementary, then flew to the upper field behind Oceanside HS, where we watched it flit around for about 20 mins., until it flew to the roof of the school just before 9:00 AM, at which point we left.

From there we went to Weskeag Marsh and watched hundreds of peeps--Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers, Semipalmated Plovers--occasionally flushed by two juvenile harriers and a Peregrine. Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs mixed in, and Derek pulled out White-rumped and BAIRD'S Sandpipers, one of each. Also, when we first got there, 5 Snowy Egrets and 1 Great Egret were perched up in a spruce tree along the marsh's edge. 2 Hooded Mergansers flew over, and other ducks in the marsh included small numbers of Mallard, black duck, and Green-winged Teal.

Over along the river by Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding property, watched hundreds more peeps fly up and down the river. I counted 11 Great Blue Herons, 2 Harbor Seals, and at least 3 Ospreys. From the Slipway restaurant, we observed a Sharpie, as well as 2 tagged Ring-billed Gulls. Back at Lyman-Morse after lunch, we had less success after a Peregrine flew through and scared away all the peeps. That's when we ran into Trevor, who was still chasing the gull. Sorry the nice Canadian birders didn't catch up with you when they found it, Trevor!

Great morning to be wandering around the coast of Maine.
