[Maine-birds] Portsmouth- Kittery harbor

Was out and about in the boat in Portsmouth Harbor Sat. evening.  Tern show there, loads of begging young,  terns diving for fish all over the place, but especially near the new bridge and the Navy Yard.  Also saw a Red-breasted Merganser amongst gulls and cormorants out at White Island near the river mouth and Whaleback Light.  In Spruce Creek in Kittery near Rte 103 bridge came upon a common loon in juvenile plumage, diving and preening.  Don’t know if this is young of the year, or a year old bird.  Seems a bit early to be in salt water.  Any comments out there?

Bonaparte’s gulls here and there, many still sporting black heads.  Only could muster one shorebird, a least sandpiper brushing the wavetops heading southbound.
