[Maine-birds] Scarborough Marsh / Pine Point - Egrets, Gadwall, Wigeons and a One-eyed Eider

Started at Dunstan's Landing where i got my FOY Great Egret.  A Bald Eagle flew over being harassed by a Herring Gull.  Also a TV, several Black Duycks, Mallards and Geese and 4 GW Teals.  From there I headed to Pelreco for my FOY Snowy Egret, 6 Gadwall, and a Great Egret.  A pair of Bufflehead and some RB-Mergansers were in the marsh on the opposite side of Pine Point Rd.

Pine Point was full of Eiders, Loons in various stages of molt, one horned grebe and several LT-Ducks.

I noticed a hen eider that had one eye.  It appears to have two eyes, but one of them doesn't appear to have fully developed.  Two photos are posted on the Maine Birds flickr page.

http://www.flickr.com/groups/mainebirdlist/pool/with/8608400668/#photo_8608400668

Anyone can join flickr and post to this group to share with all Maine birders.

Seavy's Landing had over 36 RB Mergansers.  Three large rafts that merged together.  I know they were diving bit in one image I counted 36, and I know there had to be more, probably closer to 50.

Finished the day on the Eastern Trail.  (Sorry Wally)  With a Great Egret, Two American Wigeons and several more loons.

Cheers,
Chuck

[Maine-birds] Male Northern Harrier

A male northern harrier surprised me today as I stepped out of my truck to go for one of my walks around Deerings pond in Kittery Point. There was also a canadian goose on a nest.
My pictures are on my wildlife FB page. The hawk picture wasn't great, but, identifiable.

[Maine-birds] Wonderland and Ship Harbor trails on MDI, Acadia National Park

A loop of these two trails and the shoreline in between, this morning in fine spring weather. Nothing rare to report. Black Guillemots are transitioning their plumage, and some are all the way there.
A highest-ever personal count of gulls for me in inner Ship Harbor was 220, about 30 of which were Great Black-backs. An absolute cacophony in there as they were feasting and feuding over elvers (my guess).

Birds of Isle au Haut:   Harlequin Duck Trip

Comments
:     Four to  Six Killdeer calling on the southern end of the runway near the entrance of the Hancock and Bar Harbor Airport.  Windows open because it was 47 F and warming. March 30 will be a perfect day for a boat trip around Isle au Haut, the Thorofare, and the southern waterways and Islands. I have had many opportunities over the years to sail on both the southern and northern passages around Isle au Haut aboard the gaff rigged "Angelique" out of Camden.  These harbors were and continue to be the fishing capital of the Down East Coast including Stonington where the trip leaves from today.  Any opportunity to study the Gulf of Maine Archipelago of 4600 Islands and try to understand how the Gulf of Maine functions for birds. In January,  we know there were thousands of Alcids utilizing the inter-coastal archipelago  for food and protection from winter storms.  From Northeast harbor to Mount Desert Rock we saw large numbers of Alcids. Today remnant populations.

Comments:     This Island Heritage Trust Harlequin Duck trip stayed on the outside of Merchant island to Kimball Island  moving south from Robinson's Point to Western Ear. Purple Sandpipers were one of the highlights followed by Harlequin Ducks along the wilderness of the western side of Isle au Haut. Here the Alcids were represented by Black Guillemot and seven Razorbills. We found no Murre or Atlantic Puffin in contrast to our January trip.  Is there any accurate monitoring of Stonington south in January?

Isle Au Haut South Eastern Shore March 30 2013, Knox, US-ME
Mar 30, 2013 1:20 PM - 2:00 PM
Protocol: Traveling
1.7 mile(s)
Comments:     These birds were recorded from the South Eastern shore of Isle Au Haut where we found the largest concentrations of Harlequin Duck.  The first environment cue that we were in open waters came when the temperature dropped noticeably and there was a stinging bit to the Northwesterly wind. The colder waters should in principle, be biologically rich and teaming with food. Participants had an opportunity to see the differences in species composition between these outer waters  and the Thorofare, for example.  This is where I had hoped to find some Common or Thick-billed Murre.   None were found but there were healthy numbers of Guillemot, Red-breasted Merganser and Harlequin Duck.  We did have one Northern Gannet but only brief looks at a juvenile wing before it disappeared from sight.
11 species
