[Maine-birds] Frenchman Bay area...Fulmar

Thur. 31 Oct.
One of the final nature cruises of the year around Frenchman Bay. Weather forecast has caused cancellation of the Friday trip but trips are scheduled for 11/1-8 if enough people are around.
Increasing onshore wind today brought in a nice Fulmar off Egg Rock...very rare inside of Schoodic Pt.
20+ Gannets. There have been very few up in the bay the past month compared to other years.
Large(25-50) locks of White-winged Scoters, Black Scoters, and some smaller flocks (10-15) of Surf Scoters. All of them both moving and feeding around various spots in the bay.
Continued increase of Common Loons with 30-40 seen on our 2 hour circuit of the bay, 95% of them in winter plumage.
Non-bird....50+ Harbor Seals and 10+ Northern Gray Seals on Egg Rock. Rapidly decreasing numbers of bipedal human primate mammals almost daily along the shores of Acadia National Park and the Mt. Desert Island area.

[Maine-birds] Snow Buntings

My wife and I had first of the season snow buntings on the gravel bar at Leighton Pt Beach in Pembroke this afternoon. Beautiful birds and a sure sign of winter! See ebird list of birds below

I received a call tonight from Tom Cabe who provided me with a excellent description of a Rock Wren seen on the rocks next to the water at Bog Brook Cove in Trescott late Tuesday afternoon. Tom is an experienced birder and took detailed notes of the bird; unfortunately he did not have a camera. I will try to get to Bog Brook Cove tomorrow to see if the bird is still around after the weather moves through the area. The cove is found on the Maine Coast Heritage Trust Bog Brook Cove Preserve and most of the cove adjoins private property but the gravel beach area is accessible from the preserve trail.

[Maine-birds] Loon ID help

I digiscoped a loon at the Cliff House in York, Maine. The bird was quite a ways out, so had to crop it a lot to get a better view. What do you think it is?

At 11:15 there was also a juv. Iceland Gull and several A. Pipits in the same field with a Great Blue Heron at the pond. A large flock (200+) of Grackles/blackbirds flew over.

[Maine-birds] Cape Elizabeth

This morning I checked out a few spots around Cape Elizabeth. Carolina Wrens (1 each) were at Fort William (north side of the park, between the small sandy beach and the neighborhood bordering the park property) and Two Lights State Park (right by the entrance booth/pay station). On the water from Two Lights S.P. were a ton of Common Eiders with 2 each of Black Scoter and Surf Scoter (no White-Winged seen), about 8 Harlequin Ducks, a Lesser Scaup and a Long-Tailed Duck. All easily seen with binoculars (and doable with the naked eye if you can see well). Lastly, by the Lobster Shack/"Two Lights" lighthouse was a Peregrine Falcon making a few threatening swoops around the birds resting on the rocky shoreline--I assumed it was a Merlin from a distance, but it flew closer and, with binoculars, I got a very good look at it. Red-Breasted Mergansers were seen throughout the day as well in the area.

All in all a fun morning!

[Maine-birds] Yellow-breasted Chat - Gilsland Farm Birdwalk, 10/31

Temperatures stayed in the 30s throughout our walk this morning and we only got a glimpse of the sun before low clouds rolled in. We still managed to tally 42 species for the walk though! Beginning next week (7 Nov) we will be starting the walks at 8:00am. A few highlights from today included:

Our first Common Goldeneye of the fall, at least 23 birds in two groups along the river. Bufflehead numbers continue to increase and dabbling-duck diversity got a +1 from a hen Green-winged Teal following some American Black Ducks around the cove near the 'south' blind in the West Meadow.

In fun eBird news, we got to report our first "Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon)" that will become the default in Maine in order to properly differentiate the "Rock Pigeon (Wild type)" and no longer use the overarching "Rock Pigeon". You may see "Rock Pigeon" flagged on some filters during this change over, but with filters controlling multiple things (data entry lists, record validation, and rare bird definitions) these types of "glitches" are to be expected. And the real highlight of the walk was a gorgeous Yellow-breasted Chat in the North Meadow. We found the bird in a scrubby patch of Asiatic bittersweet south of the feeders left over from the Big Sit. The bird was vocal and gave itself away quickly but did not linger.

[Maine-birds] Eastern Bluebird - Monhegan

[Maine-birds] Northern Maine Birds: Glaucous, Iceland Gulls, Red-necked Grebes

Spent an hour at Lake Josephine in Easton and Christina Reservoir in Fort Fairfield this AM. Temperatures were in the high 20's and snow was on the ground and all the smaller wetlands were frozen.

A good assortment of diving ducks were at Lake Jo including White-winged Scoter, Bufflehead, Lesser Scaup, Ruddy Ducks and a slew of Hooded Mergansers. A few lingering dabblers including Gadwall and American Wigeon were also in the count. There were also good numbers of gulls including my first Iceland and Glaucous Gulls of the season. A Rough-legged Hawk and a small flock of Horned Larks were also notable.

Birding at Christina Reservoir was slower but another Bufflehead and two Red-necked Grebes here were good finds.

Yesterday, at Collins Pond, I heard and eventually saw a very late Yellow-rumped Warbler while watching the geese with Paul Cyr.

[Maine-birds] greater white-fronted goose and snow goose

Since I was headed to southern Maine yesterday morning, I decided to search *goose fields* there for the first time ever. Thornhurst Farm fields in North Yarmouth provided plenty to see. I counted 595 Canada geese scattered throughout the viewable fields, but no other goose species. After seeing smaller flocks throughout the local area, I headed to Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook. There were many geese scattered throughout those fields. At 11:45, I stopped along County Rd., overlooking a small pond down the hill from the farm. I counted 22 Canada geese there, but while I was counting, more and more geese flew in from the fields. I kept counting, and ended up with 221 Canada geese and 1 greater white-fronted goose. They were all there when I left at 12:15.

On the way home today, I stopped at Sebasticook Lake in Newport. I counted 365 Canada geese and 1 snow goose there, along with many other waterfowl.

You would probably be glad to miss the swirling crow spectacle here this am. --hundreds of them in our yard and in the cornfield across the street, all lifting up at once then settling down to feed.

Some of us (apparently not all) have been given the opportunity to review flickr's "new photo experience beta". It frustrated me for a week or so, until I found I could opt out of the new and go back to the old.

Problem with "new" is that you are not given the option to grab the html code should you want to do so (eg in order to plant a photo on your eBird report.)

But I noticed today that they are fielding comments from users. So far it seems like the "nays" lead the "yeas" by a huge margin.

[Maine-birds] Grackles--Gone!

Just that like, after ten minutes of frenzied feeding, the grackles flew up into a big tree in the woods at property edge, communicated to one another in grackle-ese, and flew away as a flock.

Farewell, kiddos! And good riddance!

[Maine-birds] Bowdoinham Eastern towhee and Fox sparrow

The blue jays are back in large numbers, as are chickadees, white-breasted nuthatches, 10-15 goldfinches,
tufted titmice, downy
and hairy woodpeckers, mourning doves, crows, ravens….feels like winter.
But, an added treat for us in the country, a male cardinal has been here every day for 6 weeks and he
brought a female one day last week. Have not seen her since.
Among the
dark-eyed juncos and white-throated sparrows still passing through this morning was a fox sparrow
and an Eastern towhee, the first time ever for the towhee at our farm in Bowdoinham.

Sitting here watching my feeders and, for the first time since I moved to my new home this August, I'm getting Common Grackles--looks like a whole flock--swooping into my backyard and hitting my feeders hard. They're coming in waves and just dropping in, like they were flying over and suddenly saw a great restaurant at my exit.

Noooooooo! What's next, House Sparrows? Is my run of pest-free backyard feeding over?

Will they ever leave? Mine is a pretty rich buffet; there are about thirty of them feasting out there. Theirs is a terrible, glossy-green beauty. Were they just really migrating over and saw my place? That's what it seems like. I had them year-round in Central PA, but this is new.

[Maine-birds] Cape Small

Doug Suitor and I birded Cape Small this morning.

Highlights included:

- 9 sparrows incl: Fox, Field and Ipswich.

- Flock of 38 Rusty Blackbirds fell out of the sky like rain.

- A solo Orange-crowned Warbler, singling out goldenrod seed-heads among a sea of Bayberry/Multiflora Rose

- Multiple Sharpies. Harriers, and BEagles; plus a male Merlin

- 1 Pipit overhead; plus a H Lark-Pipit type

- Oldsquaws, WW Scoter, Black Scoter, RNGrebe, RB Merganser - all increasing in numbers.

[Maine-birds] "Audubon's" Yellow-rumped Warbler - YES - Fort Foster, Kittery, 10/30

Hi all,

Cameron Cox - slowly working his way north for tonight's program and book signing (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) - reports that the "AUDUBON'S" YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER is still present at Fort Foster in Kittery. The bird was in the exact same area as on Sunday: follow the entrance road towards the water. Where the woods open up, and there is a parking lot on the left, the bird was on the right edge of the open space, often in the Eastern Red Cedars that are within the mowed lawn. Cameron reports that the bird is "holding court" at this very moment, without a single other yellow-rump in sight.

He also had a Prairie Warbler in the park.

[Maine-birds] Clay-colored and other MDI sparrows!

I went birding at the Mount Desert Island High School this morning. What was going to be a quick stop to see if there was anything interesting on the ponds (a male American Wigeon, a female Bufflehead, and a female Green-winged Teal were all good) turned into an hour of chasing sparrows. There seemed to be a sparrow fallout! The sparrows were all rapidly flitting about, making it difficult to get on any of them for very long. Highlights: 1 Clay-colored Sparrow! at least 60 Song Sparrows, and 1 Nelson’s Sparrow. The list:

[Maine-birds] 10/29 pelagic trip results

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of joining the Bar Harbor Whale Watch on their last whale watching trip of the season. This was a perfect day for the last trip of the season: calm with seas 1-2 feet, light winds, clear and sunny. The only whales were the small and toothed Harbor Porpoise, but we did see 13 of them during the course of the trip.

Our route took us from Bar Harbor to Mount Desert Rock. We then continued south a fair piece until we were 39 miles from Mount Desert Island. On the return, we made our way north and east Bank Comfort and then the Outer Schoodic Ridges, then back to Bar Harbor.

[Maine-birds] PACIFIC LOON Marinal Way

Hi all,

While birding with the Wednesday birding group, I stumbled on a pair(!) of PACIFIC LOONS off of Marginal Way in Ogunquit. When I first saw them, they were wayyy out, perhaps at the theoretical limit of how far one could recognize than a loon wasn't a Common Loon. Fortunately, they eventually drifted a little closer in, to just within the limit that one could safely identify a Pacific Loon through a 60x scope on a cloudy, cold but windless day (which, coincidentally, happens to be the exact conditions I found myself in).

The two birds were associating with 2 Common Loons, seen from Marginal Way straight out from Briar Bank Rd, where there's a railing and a stair down to the beach. I watched them for about 30-40 minutes, and they consistently appeared slightly smaller than the nearby Common Loons, with a paler gray nape, thinner bill and straight dividing line between light and dark on the neck, not broken by a white wedge like in Common Loon. I'll be the first to admit that Pacific Loon ID is tricky and that these two birds were seen at great distance, but I've some experience with Pacific Loons out west and the distinctly smaller bill, paler gray nape, rounded head and clean line on the neck is distinctive even at a distance. I took what is perhaps the worst digiscoped video ever, but the distance was probably too great to show anything but a few blobs. Below is my ebird checklist with my description of the two birds:

[Maine-birds] Bremen - Buffleheads and Common Merganser

Ah, more first of season birds - a flock of 12 Buffleheads and 1 Common Merganser in the cove plus 3 common loons - all enjoying the bounties of high tide in sheltered water.

The Red-Bellied Woodpecker is also coming more frequently to the feeders.

Very same spot as the Least Flycatcher. Ah, the productive Monhegan House yard!

I joined Jan Pierson and family for two partial days of birding.

Of interest on Monday, 28 Oct: a silent, very late pewee in the fierce wind, we think it's an Eastern Wood-Pewee, photographs posted on my Flicker account. Field Sparrow and a wide variety of other sparrows.

[Maine-birds] crows in Sidney

The crows, as others have noted, are certainly on the move. This a.m. I watched a river of crows flow past our house headed southwest. They had not stopped passing when I had to leave for work. We've also had dozens of crows in the yard (some eating our remaining apples. Glad I picked the rest!) and in the cornfields surrounding our house.

This weekend we still had bluebirds and song sparrows at our house. I'm not sure if they've moved on.

[Maine-birds] Greater White-fronted Goose - Westbrook, 10/28

Just wanted to forward a report of an adult Greater White-fronted Goose that was seen yesterday in Westbrook. The bird was photographed around 12:30PM in a flock of Canada Geese as they took off from the fields at Smiling Hill Farm (781 County Road, Westbrook). Sounds like we've got a couple in the state right now!

[Maine-birds] Greater white-fronted Goose, Blackberry Hill Road, Berwick

I located a Juv. Greater White-fronted Goose on my way to run some errands
at about 10:24 this morning. While sitting in my car and calling my birding
friends it and about 150 Canada Geese flew up and off. I came back about
11:30 and did not find any geese at all.
I travelled the roads in the area. At Spring Hill Restaurant on 117 Pond
Hill, S. Berwick, I found 85 Canada Geese sitting on Knights Pond. I talked
to the owners son about rules for birding there and he asked that birders
came in and let them knew you would like to go birding. Knight Pond is just
north of the restaurant down the hill. You also can view birds on Nights
Pond by going east on Knights Pond road until can see a road that goes
through the east end of the Pond. I usually park near the end of the road
because the road is in bad condition most of the time.

Also i found 215 Canada Geese on Roberts Road in rollingsford, NH.
at 10:58

These geese usually spend the night on Salmon Falls River at night and
during the day will fly into Maine and NH to spend the day.

[Maine-birds] Northern Shrike & Carolina Wren

This morning on a sunrise walk at Viles Arboretum in Augusta I found a Northern Shrike on the Outer Loop Trail, in the row of trees by the gravel road leading into the park from the north (Piggery Road).

Back at home, a very richly colored Carolina Wren spent a minute poking around the bushes and trees by my kitchen window as I was having lunch. Maybe it will hang around for the winter.

On the 23rd, a SHORT-EARED OWL was seen throughout the day around Biddeford Pool.

The Saco Yacht Club at the end of Front Street in Saco hosted an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER on the 23rd.

Greater Portland

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was reported from Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth on the 21st.

Another ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER from the 21st was seen along the Eastern Promenade in Portland.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was reported coming to private feeders in Casco on the 24th.

Kennebec River Valley (Augusta-Waterville)

On the 21st, a LONG-EARED OWL was reported from a yard in East Winthrop, along Cobbosecontee Lake.

The Viles Arboretum, off Hospital Street in Augusta, hosted a BLUE GROSBEAK early this week.

Midcoast

On the 19th, a WHITE-EYED VIREO was found at Head Beach in Phippsburg. This bird was still being seen along the east end of the beach on a thickly vegetated slope on the 23rd.

A BELL'S VIREO was found along Abner Point on Bailey's Island in Harpswell on the 22nd. This represents the fourth or fifth record of this species in the state.

In South Harpswell, a LARK SPARROW was photographed in a neighborhood "past the Lobster House but before Potts Point Road" on the 22nd.

Noteworthy species from Monhegan Island this week included a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on the 19th and a photographed ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER on the 21st.

Penobscot Bay

An ICELAND GULL was found at the end of Lobster Lane in Owls Head on the 22nd.

Downeast

A WHITE-EYED VIREO was reported from the Ingersoll Point Preserve in Addison on the 23rd. It was seen at the intersection of the Alder Woods Trail and the Beach Trail on the northeastern point of the preserve. This bird was still being seen here on the 25th.

Western Mountains

There was a late report, from the 16th, of a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE on a forested mountainside near Claybrook Lodge in Highland Plantation.

Northern Maine

Maine's fifth PINK-FOOTED GOOSE was photographed at Collins Pond in Caribou on the 19th. This bird was not relocated in the following days.

On the 21st, a CACKLING GOOSE was found with 1,100 CANADA GEESE at the mill pond in Limestone.

[Maine-birds] Viles Arboretum birds and plants

Hi Folks,

I titled this 'Birds and plants' because I had more species of plants still in flower than bird species on Friday Oct 25. I went to Piggery Road next to the arboretum and birded the area behind the first building and ball field on the left, the boardwalk across the wetland and a brief walk to Piggery Pond.

Bird numbers and variety had really dropped from the previous weekend. I went looking for American robins which had been seen in numbers along the coast. None were present. Also absent (not detected) were gray catbirds and eastern bluebirds. Swamp sparrows, savannah sparrows and white-crowned sparrows appeared to have departed.

Highlights included 3 winter wrens, 3 palm warblers and a female hooded merganser. Plant highlights included 5 species of Aster and 4 species of goldenrod, all in flower. 13 other species of plants were still in flower, most with late flowers, usually on branches that had been previously broken resulting in late flower production.

[Maine-birds] Tufted Titmice

For our first 20 or so years here we had titmice regularly as fall and spring migrants, but for the last couple of years they have been year round and definitely nesting. Their song is different from what we knew in NC.

[Maine-birds] Ingersoll Point Preserve White-eyed Vireo YES

In S. Addison (Washington Cty) and thanks to the postings of Merle and Anne Archie, Billy Helprin and I walked the Adler Pt and Wahoa Bay trails at the Ingersoll Point Preserve today. Many highlights, obviously including a well-seen and photographed White-eyed Vireo. In addition:

[Maine-birds] YCAS "Rarity Roundup" Field Trip, 10/27 ("AUDUBON'S" WARBLER, interior Nelson's Sparrow, Nashville Warbler, etc)

Hi all,

I had the pleasure of leading our annual "York County Rarity Roundup" Field Trip for York County Audubon today. With no rarities to "round up," we set out to find our own, birding from Kittery through Wells.

The bird of the day was obviously the "AUDUBON'S" YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER at Fort Foster in Kittery. A very dull, probably 1st-year female, we were able to study it exhaustively. Noah Gibb and I photographed it, and I stole Marian Zimmerman's phone in order to voice record it. I'll post photos tomorrow, but Noah is welcome to beat me to it (I think he got the best shots).

If anyone wants to look for it, the bird was flycatching and occasionally eating Red Cedar berries along the west edge of the park. Follow the entrance road into the park, until the large gravel parking lot opens up on the left. The bird was loyal to the right (west) edge here, especially around the big cedars in the mowed lawn.

Here and elsewhere, we had a very birdy day amassing a preliminary total of 63 spp of birds (9 spp sparrows, 5 spp shorebirds, 4 species warblers, etc) along with 5 spp butterflies, 3 spp mammals, 2 spp of dragonflies, 1 reptile, and 1 amphibian.

Other highlights included:
- 1 pair Wood Ducks, Legion Pond, Kittery.

In Franklin, I have not seen a Downy Woodpecker at my feeders in years. I would have to dig out records to determine when. Until yesterday (10/26/2013) A lone male landed, then flew off.
