[Maine-birds] Lubec Birding

Today we walked out to the end of the sand spit at Lubec looking for the Tri-colored Heron, but it was a no-show.    But we did see two Chimney Swifts and a Horned Lark.  Also, a flock of 35 or so Black-bellied Plovers were the only shorebirds we saw.

[Maine-birds] WEVireo, etc. - Phippsburg May 31

Was able to photo at a distance, and record the song of a White eyed Vireo in Phippsburg this morning. Full details of location will be withheld until a later date, because of the possibility of nesting.

In an interesting example of the Patagonian Picnic Table Effect, I got good looks at a Bicknell's Thrush while waiting for the vireo to sing. Efforts at a photo entailed pointing my lens in the general direction of the bird foraging in the low underbrush and ferns, and firing away with extreme prejudice. There are no images in my shots. The bird was silent. 2 Hermit Thrushes were singing in the general area.

[Maine-birds] Monhegan MEGAs Update

Hi all,

Gabriel Willow informed me that as of 12:30pm today when his NYC Audubon group left the island, neither the VIRGINIA'S WARBLER or the BREWER'S SPARROW had been seen today- to his knowledge anyway. In fact, he had not heard of the sparrow being seen after about 10am yesterday morning.

That being said, I'll be the last one to discourage anyone from going to the island this weekend to look for these, or who knows what else?

[Maine-birds] Good Indigo Bunting viewing location - Mt. Agamenticus (York)

For the past 10 days or so, there's been a male indigo bunting perch singing atop Mount Agamenticus in York.

From the summit parking lot, head northwest to the 2-story observation deck. You can usually hear/see him from there.  Nice transitional plumage still.

Also atop Mt A. is a prairie warbler with a very distinct song (not buzzy or ascending). He's usually near the hemlocks & rocks 100 yds E/NE of the observation deck.

In terms of ecological context, the summit of Mt A was heavily logged 3 winters ago, creating brushy, early successional habitat - thus welcoming back such birds as the indigo bunting, prairier warbler, and many more.

[Maine-birds] Messalonskee - May 29 Kayak to SE corner

A gorgeous morning after the (Bright) fog lifted. Absolutely FAC on the water. But actually the birds were quite quiet and not very active. At least 20 Black Terns (difficult to estimate numbers) were actively feeding, after the fog lifted. Had a very cooperative Va. Rail, and saw or heard 3 PBGrebes. One burst of bugling from 2 Sandhill Cranes, never seen. Things like Swamp Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow and Marsh Wren were quite subdued.

And a Quinella on swallows: all 5 plus a male Purple Martin.

[Maine-birds] Great bird-related job opportunity in Rockland!

Hello,

Forgive me if this is not of interest, but knowing how many are out of work, or looking for something better, I thought I'd post this message.  Rockland's Project Puffin Visitor Center, an Audubon affiliate, is in desperate need of an Assistant Manager.  The duties include informing and educating the public who visit the center about Puffins and related coastal/island wildlife, assisting with some office duties (cash register, mailings, etc.), and includes a series of 4 1-hour programs to be held in July with the local Children's Museum.  This likely is not posted yet online, but if you're interested please email me.  I know of this opening because, regrettably, I am creating it.  I am currently serving as the Assistant Manager but was just offered a dream job within the National Park Service in California.  So I am chasing that dream but leaving the Project Puffin center in an admittedly tight spot.  The position ideally will start within 2 weeks or so, lasting into early September.

For more information, please contact me.  I'd be happy to help a fellow bird-lover get a great job.  Birding, education, and/or office experience are all a plus!

Thanks,

Kyle Te Poel

[Maine-birds] West Paris Snowy Owl!

Because I saw the previous posts about a snowy on Rte 26 near W Paris, I kept my eyes peeled on the way over to VT today.  I was rewarded with the bird sitting on a wire overlooking the Moose Lake Brook!  It was less than 1 mile north of Snow Falls just before W Paris on Rte 26.   We got out of the car to have a look and attracted quite a few other cars stopping to see what all the fuss was about.  Apparently there was a recent article about this snowy in the Norway paper.
You'd think that after the snowy owl blitz this winter it would become a little " how-hum"...... but not really. Especially when I kept remembering that it was May 29!     Hubby got a few pictures...here's the link.

RE: [Maine-birds] VIRGINIA'S WARBLER, Monhegan, 5/29

So as a geographer I am curious regarding the now 4 Virginia’s Warblers in Maine (and I think all of New England, right?) which have all shown up on Monhegan.

I am aware of these:

May 21 1998, a male (Dennis)

Sept 28-30 2006, gender? (Laux et al.)

Nov 8 2011, female (Hitchcox)

May 29 2014, male (Willow?)

Why nowhere else?  Surely as many birders hit Plum Island as Monhegan, and other other famous places (Mt Auburn Cemetery?).  Looking at the range map, one can make sense of the migratory error with a 90 degree compass shift, and is it then just a trick of geography they all end up on our little island?

[Maine-birds] DC Cormorants

I admit to being out of the loop sometimes, but it seemed rather unusual
to me to find at least 125 Double-crested Cormorants in one spot along
the Kennebec River between Waterville and Winslow. This was yesterday,
late morning. There were also a few shorebirds hunkered down in the
cold drizzle at the Flood Farm: Spotted, Least, Semi peep (2), Semi
Plover(1), Killdeer, and SB Dowitcher (2). Seems like variety than
usual for spring, at least at this location.

[Maine-birds] Capisic Pond - Portland

I saw two otters at Capisic Pond this morning.  They were playing around in the cattails and in the open water, rolling around, diving, eating fish and disturbing numerous hidden birds.

At first I thought they where minks, but they were much bigger than the other minks I have seen and they clearly had stout tails which tapered to a point.

Has anyone else seen otters in Capisic?  Is that even possible?

Thanks

[Maine-birds] Downeast Big Day

I'm sure this is going to make eBird say "are you sure?" A pre-festival
Downeast Big Day swept the coast from Columbia to Lubec today, amassing a
good list and some great sightings. We started with a Spruce Grouse in
Roque Bluffs that should provide fodder for jokes. At the end of my
favorite trail, I had to explain that I frequently encounter a male in
this spot, but that it looks like we'll miss him today. That's when a
participant pointed out that the grouse was on a tree limb directly over
my head, in plain sight, merely 6 feet away. The twerp.

Other mega-highlights included a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher along the North
Trail of Moosehorn NWR - Edmunds Div. A Brant was on South Lubec Road
opposite Pike's Pond. Best of all, a Tri-colored Heron was behind the
beach at South Lubec Sand Flats. That's very rare up in these here parts.

[Maine-birds] Re: Brewer's Sparrow continues, Monhegan Island, 5/28

I finally got a chance to see it at the end of Wharton's Ave - which is the road that goes past the Parsonage then along the shore and ends in a turn around. It slowly moved west up the hill (toward my house) Later in mid-afternoon it was heard in the bushes behind my feeders and finally I saw it at about 6pm sitting on my fence nearest the feeders.

[Maine-birds] Flycatchers in Bangor

In Essex Woods this morning (cold and damp) there was some migrant activity going on - we saw a large number of both Least as well as Alder Flycatchers feeding low to the ground.  The star flycatcher was a single Olive-sided Flycatcher perched on the north end of the trail near the meadow.  In Prentis Woods we saw our FOY Great Crested Flycatcher.

[Maine-birds] White-faced Ibis, Scarborough Marsh, My 6 Year Old's Blog 5/25

My 6 year old son Owen blogged about his experience in Maine this past holiday weekend. We did have the Ibis on Sunday fairly close to the road Also the Tricolored Heron x Snowy Egret Hybrid was present!. Lots of lifers were had for him up there and it was a great experience! On Monday we went up to Belgrade and were able to add Black Terns to both our lifelists. Too bad we didn't have a lot of time as we would have liked to have rented a boat for some closer looks! My son is doing a little big year in the New England area. His big goal was 250 and his first goal was 200 which he surpassed quickly and now thanks to Maine is at 220!  to bad we didnt hop on that ferry for the Brewer's Sparrow!

good birding and thanks for reading and thank you for the emails with locations!

[Maine-birds] NH Audubon Pelagic Bird Trip - 5/26/14 (King Eider, Northern Fulmar)

NH Audubon sponsored an all day pelagic trip yesterday aboard the
"Granite State" out of Rye Harbor, NH. We cruised due east over the
Scantum area before continuing to Jeffrey's Ledge and worked our way
north along the ledge until we made it north to the "Fingers" area of
the ledge. With birds still scarce, we cruised west to inspect Boon
Island Lighthouse before heading back.

Birds were scarce. And although we had about 7+ Fin Whales and 1 or 2
Minkes, the whales were not terribly cooperative. A pod of 50+ Atlantic
White-sided Dolphins was the highlight for marine mammals. The
highlights for birds were the continuing immature male King Eider off
Star Island and the first Sooty Shearwater and Wilson's Storm-Petrels of
the year and nice views of a light morph Northern Fulmar. Thanks to Jon
Woolf for organizing this trip and to Captain Pete Reynolds for
skillfully working the birds and whales we encountered.

[Maine-birds] South Point Sanctuary (Biddeford Pool) Remains Active

South Point Sanctuary continues to be very active.  Today diversity was down but numbers up:  countless yellow, common yellowthroat, redstart, magnolia.  Also black-throated blue.  Other visitors over the past week have been blackburnian, bay-breasted, chestnut-sided, blackpoll, black-throated green, northern parula, black & white.  White-eyed vireo seen & heard over the past week not present today. Other species today were eastern towhee, drake wood ducks (a dozen reported by another observer), baltimore oriole, cedar waxwing (large flock), numerous flycatchers, eastern peewee, red-eyed vireo (seemingly dozens). Beach today near the sanctuary saw numerous black-bellied plovers, semi-palmated, and several ruddy turnstone.  Entrance is rather hidden, on 7th St. on right just beyond the first house after the intersection of 7th, 4th, and 1st.

[Maine-birds] Great day at Fuller Farm - need help with an ID

Had a great morning out at Fuller Farm in Scarborough. Highlights included a m/f SCARLET TANAGER pair, BLACK-THROATED BLUE warbler down below the canopy singing, and a very vocal WOOD THRUSH and HOUSE WREN. My full list can be found here:

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S18580536

Had one mystery bird, looks to be a Vireo of some sort. Any help with and ID would be wonderful - wasnt singing at all, so all I have to go on are these (rather bad) images.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/46480978@N07/14095430070/in/photostream/

The closest thing I have found was a Bell's Vireo, but I am very hesitant to report as such since it would mean he was pretty lost. Positive double white wing bar, one much more prominent than the other. White eye ring, dark eye. Light yellow underneath (this is tougher to tell in the images).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, and happy birding.

[Maine-birds] 120 Species in Brunswick

It was a good day birding in Brunswick on Sunday for my annual Big Day, with 120 species recorded, and funds raised for eBird.  Highlights included a singing Lincoln's Sparrow, two singing Wood thrushes (one of which has been present at least 10 days and presumably nesting at Brunswick Landing, the former BNAS), a late Greater Scaup off Simpson Point, and a late Common Goldeneye off Wharton Point.  One unusual sight was at least 19 Fish crows flying around in circles and generally raising a ruckus at the Brunswick Town Mall late in the afternoon.  Earlier in the day, there were no Fish crows in evidence anywhere downtown, so possibly these birds were wanderers or late migrants.

The big shorebird arrival was missed at Wharton Point on Sunday, but Monday morning saw the appearance of a large flock of Short-billed Dowitchers.

Good birding,

Gordon

[Maine-birds] Intervale Marshes - May 26

We birded early on the St Lawrence and Atlantic RR roadbed (New Gloucester) , down to the big marsh. Three of us put a lot of effort into finding continuing Blue-winged Warblers, but dipped. They just didn't perform today.

Other highlights included Olive-sided Fly, and Alder.\, Willow, Least Flies, as well as Phoebes and E Kingbirds.

12 spp. of warblers, including singing Wilson's Warbler.

4 Sandhill Cranes; including two that flew in high, then turned and split for parts unknown.

The American Bittern in the roadside wetlands near the start did his show, and 3 other Va. Rails also did their thing.

Also lots of bobolink activity and Rosy Gros singing and chasing.

[Maine-birds] Re: Monhegan, 5.24.14

I've never seen a Bank Swallow. Its funny there haven't been any Purple Finches. I usually see them every spring.

[Maine-birds] Grand Slam! Well, OK, a Messalonskee Grand Slam

On way back from camp, we stopped at Messalonskee Lake's south boat launch, as well as the Depot Rd Martin Colony and Hallowell Sand Pit, for the annual Spring Mesalonskee Grand Slam.

We lucked out with 11 Black Tern and 1 far distant "rusty" Sandhill Crane off the boat launch, a fair numbers of Martins at the Martin houses, on the north end of Depot Rd, and a half dozen, or so, of Bank Swallows at the Hallowell Sand Pit (Depot Rd). All locations are within 1.2 miles of each other.

[Maine-birds] Various Sightings

I went up to Intervale in New Gloucester today. I first checked out the
Intervale Perserve & the railroad tracks next to it & then went to St.
Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad. I managed to find the Alder Flycatchers, 9
between the 2 locations, Willow Flycatcher, only one, & the American
Bittern, not very far in on the ST. L&A tracks. It was off to the left.
I didn't go in far enough to see the Sandhill Cranes & the Blue-winged
Warblers didn't make an appearance. Links to lists follow.

On my way home I decided to stop at Biddeford Pool. The Snowy Owl was
still on Mile Stretch Road, 1st house on left. Who would have thought
we'd still see a Snowy Owl on Memorial Day. I wonder if he'll still be
around for Independence Day.

I scanned the point behind Hattie's from my car & saw a number of
shorebirds, mostly Black-bellied Plover. With the scope I could see
there were also Ruddy Turnstones, Dowitchers, didn't get a good enough
look from the car to see which one, & at least one Red Knot. There may
have been other shorebirds also.

I went to 7th St, South Point Sanctuary, not expecting much at 11:30,
but found a nice little flurry of activity. I ended up with 8 species of
warblers including Bay-breasted & Blackpoll and an Eastern Wood-pewee. I
ended up with 22 species.

After lunch & entering my sightings in E-bird, I remembered there was a
report of Blue-winged Warblers in Saco. I checked the sighting & decided
to go see if I could locate them even if it was a bit late in the day. I
drove out to 49 Smutty Lane & practically the 1st thing I heard was one
of the Blue-winged, I heard a second one a short while later. While
trying to get a look at the calling bird I heard & saw Common
Nighthawks, six, overhead. They were joined at one point by an Eastern
Kingbird. I ended up with 21 species.

[Maine-birds] Chimney Swifts in Auburn

At the Fabric Warehouse at 104 Washington St. you can see an old
abandoned factory in Auburn with the smoke stack chimney still
standing. On Saturday evening around 7:45 we watched in the pouring
rain for 45 minutes while 400 chimney swifts dove, wheeled, dispersed,
gathered, buzzed the chimney top, twittered like mad to each other,
hawked bugs, and fluttered. Finally, on some unknown signal, they
formed a black vortex moving in a counter-clockwise direction and
funneled into the chimney all at once like falling leaves in a wind
storm in about 15 seconds. Show over.

On Sunday Cindy Elias reported:

Clear skies; temps in 50's, low 60's.

Arrived 7:35 - no swifts in sight.

7:45 - first one shows up, then 2-3. Flying over Fabric Store, trees, but not over chimney.

8:00 - 6-10 birds

8:10 - 12- 15 birds ( no organized flight over chimney yet )

8:15 - 30- 40 birds

8: 16 - 60+ birds and beginning to circle over chimney ( ? a critical # needed to start the circling)

8:20 - 100+ birds...........and within a minute or so increases to several 100

With binocs I saw 2 small groups ( 10-20 ) go into chimney between 8:20 and 8:29.

8:29 - the remaining huge group goes in pretty much at once - perhaps 1-2 stragglers but by 8:30 the sky was empty.
