[Maine-birds] NEW YEAR'S EVE REMINDER - turn'em back!

Ok "Listers", don't forget to turn all the registers back to zero, midnight, tonight. Tomorrow we start with a clean slate.

Hopefully the Eurasian Wigeon, Western Tanager, Chat and King Eider will stick around, and perhaps the departed Damariscotta Pink-footed Goose, will turn up in the North Yarmouth, Cumberland and Falmouth Goose Fields, but there are plenty of other seasonal rarities lingering to help jump start the New Year.

Good Birding in 2015.. See you out there!

RE: [Maine-birds] No Pink-footed

Ditto on that, drove all over that area today between 9:30 and 11 - nada.
From Phippsburg, also cruised all over Rockland, Thomaston, The Samoset, Whitefield, Union, Appleton,  Jefferson, Somerville, etc. looking for Snowy owls or anything, but alas...........I think I shall start doing reverse postings of that which I do not see. Seems more productive. Oh, flock of 21 Hooded mergs at Damarascotta Mills which was pleasant.

Not that unusual, but at least 100 robins flew over Rt. 1 in Falmouth today while we were heading back from Portland. Our total highway hawk count (all redtails) was 8.

A sliver of open water remains on the east side of the lake. The flock of 40+ American coots found this early morning was reduced to 12-15 birds by 3 pm. Overnight temperatures will likely seal the deal.

[Maine-birds] Barrow's Goldeneyes, South Freeport, 12/31

Hi all,

Jeannette spotted the first BARROW'S GOLDENEYES of the season in the Lower Haraseekett River here in South Freeport, from the Freeport Town Wharf at the end of Pine Street in South Freeport. One adult male and one immature male are the latest "first-of-seasons" that we have recorded in the Haraseekett. No doubt they arrived in the past few days with a noticeable uptick of Common Goldeneyes around the area, thanks to the return of winter.

[Maine-birds] Yellow-breasted Chat

The Yellow-breasted Chat continues at a lovely small farm in Lincolnville. Jay Philoon reports that it has been there a while. Coming from the north, take 173 at Lincolnville Beach off Route 1. Three or four miles later you’ll come to the Youngtown Road. Turn left. You’ll notice the parking area for hiking up Bald Rock on your left. Go about 15 cents of a mile and you’ll see “Deantown Road” sign on your left. This is their driveway. You should be able to park on it without blocking it near the very head. If you’re coming from Camden, take Rt. 52 to the Youngtown Inn at the junction of Youngtown Rd. “Deantown” is opposite mailbox #93. You can walk up the driveway, and you’ll likely be greeted by two large friendly dogs.

The Chat feeds on the ground at the sunflower feeders in front of the house. I spotted it in a tangle of Rosa multiflora at one end of their small orchard, and got several good looks at it.

[Maine-birds] New Sweden: Pine siskins, Redpolls and 2 RB Nuthatches

Saw our first siskin yesterday; the redpolls arrived (about a dozen) last week; and we finally saw the two Red-breasted nuthatches at the same time so I can definitely say we have two.  With light conditions as they'd been because of the overcast here for a couple of weeks, I hadn't been quite sure.

My grandkids saw two Grey jays at their feeders on Monday!

Regulars at the feeders recently:

Mourning Dove

Downy Woodpecker

Hairy Woodpecker

Blue Jay

Black-capped chickadee

Red-breasted Nuthatch

American Tree Sparrow

Evening grosbeak

Common redpoll

American goldfinch

Pine siskin

So, when searching for Western Grebes or whatever on this body of water,  consider its history, circa 1740.  And I guess the reference is to THE John Adams??

[Maine-birds] Kennebunk Western Tanager Yes-Cousens apt. Monday

On Monday, 12/29, after freezing in the wind for 45 minutes looking for the Western Tanager at the corner of Day St and Brown St., with no luck, I decided to look for robins. About 12:45 p.m. I found large numbers of them around the parking lot of the Cousens apartments  on Day St. nearer town. A Western Tanager was favoring a berried tree near the playground. I watched it for several minutes; it flew and then came back for another 20 minutes or so, seen from my car about 6' away. It was gone when I left at 1:20. The yellow belly and bright yellow wing bar were clearly in sight most of the time. It flew when I got out of my car.

We stopped by on Sunday for about an hour with no luck either. It was very quiet there at that time as well. We heard a crow in the distance, a smattering of chickadees in the greenery as we entered the park and a lone house finch sitting atop a pine along the road to the parking area. There were 5 Herring gulls seen in the distance over the pond. Too pretty a place to be so quiet...

[Maine-birds] Cumberland through Biddeford, 12/29 (EUWI, 2 SNOW, GRCA, etc)

 Hi all,
I traveled with clients today between Cumberland and Biddeford, focusing on looking for Snowy Owls and our regular fun winter waterbirds (I will never tire of looking at Harlequin Ducks!), yielded the following seasonable, and unseasonable, highlights:

- 3 Iceland Gulls (2 1st winter, 1 2nd winter), Mill Creek Cove, South Portland - white-winged gull numbers remain very low in Portland Harbor this winter.
- 1 female Northern Pintail, Mill Creek Park, South Portland - the "Winter of the Pintail" continues!
- Grondin Pond, Scarborough:
1 drake EURASIAN WIGEON continues.
10 American Wigeons
8 Ruddy Ducks
- 1 GRAY CATBIRD, Saco Yacht Club.
- 2 SNOWY OWLS, East Point, Biddeford Pool: 1 perched on small island immediately west of Wood Island, second bird appeared on Wood Island Light as the sun was setting.

[Maine-birds] 47 N Pintail at the Abby today

I stopped by the Abby this afternoon and found the same large flock as yesterday. With scope in hand, I was able to count all the ducks individually.

47 N Pintail - numbers for this species are remarkable this winter.
270 Mallards
35 Am Black Ducks
1 Lesser Scaup feeding on the mud like the dabblers, unexpected behavior.

[Maine-birds] Western Grebe - Yes

The previously reported Western Grebe was about 20 m north of Red Nun "12" in Middle Bay, between Birch I. and Harpswell, today at 11:37. It dove, then surfaced closer to Birch I., then became entangled in gull piracy on 2 Drake Com Eiders. A boat w/ 2 duck hunters and a Black Lab then stirred up all the waterfowl in the vicinity, and it was not seen again.

All this visible from the terminus of the Wilson's Cove Trail, the fourth of six vantage points for scoping. The second of these points (Skolfield Shores Prsrv) provided the best view of a building flock of Scaup, mostly Greaters.

[Maine-birds] Common teal & other nice dabblers in Machias

Hi folks,

I'm a bit late getting this report out as I could not get to a computer until last night.

I was in Machias over Christmas and managed to get out and bird the intertidal marshes along the east side of the upper Machias River for an hour on Dec. 26.

Highlights included an Eurasian teal (male with the lack of vertical white bar/ was clearly missing and the horizontal white bar was bright), a pair of green-winged teal, 4 gadwall, 1 Am widgeon (female) and 12 pintails.

Most of the time birding was spent behind the Machias medical building on the right heading north on Rt. 1 (after the causeway).  This is a larger modern building with a lower level (not visible from the river) that opens toward the river.  I drive down the access road beside the building and park along the left end of the small lot, which is out of the road for vehicles turning around.  There is a dental practice overlooking the marsh from a different angle just up the road.

Behind the medical building is a large open flooded pond along the railroad tracks.  The inside of the pond abuts several large muddy substrates (with remains of grasses that sometimes look like ducks) each separated by a narrow band of marsh.  This viewing area is primarily on the left side of the parking area. Immediately below the parking area (the large muddy areas are to the left), there is a salt/brackish marsh between the parking lot and river.  This extends to the right side of the parking area and contains a strip of open water/mud.

If you park facing the river, you can scan the mud, pond and strips of vegetation with your scope balanced on your window; and the front side of the marsh through your windshield, both effective in the rain.

The birds counted in this marsh (mostly individually with black ducks underestimated):

Canada geese         240 +/- 5 The geese were all hunkered down in several directions which was not good for canning with 10x bins for hidden tiny critters.
Am black duck         110 (not as easy to pick out from a distance)
Ring-billed gull           55+  Kept arriving
Northern pintail           12    Personal high for Washington Co; reflecting climate warming as I have birded Washington Co for 40 years
Mallard                         10
Gadwall                          4
Am. widgeon                  1 female
Green-winged teal          2 (pair)
Eurasian teal                   1 male

I checked out the location in East Machias above the Rt. 1 bridge on the north side of the East Machias River for Barrow's goldeneyes and the common goldeneye x hooded merganser hybrid but no birds were present.  I did not have time to check upriver where Rt. 191 crosses the East Machias River or upriver and below-river south of the bridge....family obligations.

Good Birding!

[Maine-birds] Gyrfalcon at the Lubec Bar, Sat, 27 Dec

Mac Hunter just emailed that he saw a gray-phase Gyrfalcon at the Lubec Bar on Saturday. He also reported 7 pintail in Machias.

Speaking of pintails, there were 27 at the mouth of the Abby yesterday. This species has become increasingly regular in Dec and Jan in recent years but they seem to be everywhere and in substantial numbers this winter. The Abby is ice free at the moment but that will likely change in the next day or so.

[Maine-birds] Juvenile Broadwing Fly-over Cape Neddick?

Saturday, 12/27, all my chickens and ducks headed for cover when they saw the hawk before I did and alerted me to it. It circled right over us at my house between Third Hill/Mt. A and Ogunquit. Is it possible that a juvie Broadwing could be hanging around late December, albeit balmy weather?

Our Red-bellied WPs are still here and at the suet feeders.

Saw a couple of Horned Grebes in Wells yesterday, 12/28 off Webhannet Drive.  Loons, Eiders, Mallards Ogunquit River. Cormorants, Long-tails off Nubble Light. Harlequins, Eiders, off Cliff House.

[Maine-birds] Kennebunk: Western Tanager...

Pat Sanborn and I briefly viewed the Western Tanager this morning
where Day St. meets Brown St. in Kennebunk. In what must have been a
moment of luck, the bird popped out of a Northern White-cedar that was
right next to us and landed in a deciduous tree not more than 20'
away. I was only able to snap one photo before the bird headed
northwest along Day St.

According to a resident, the bird has been visiting her feeder for at
least a week. She was pleased to finally figure out what kind of bird
she'd been seeing.

My notes and photo can be seen here:

[Maine-birds] Snowy Owl, Cumberland-Yarmouth, 12/28

Hi all,

While I was unable to relocate the Snowy Owl found yesterday along Ledge Road in Yarmouth, I found a bird perched on Sturdivant Island, as viewed from the Cumberland Town Landing off of Rte 88 at about 10:30am.

The bird was still visible at the same spot in the distance from Madeleine Point on Cousin's Island, Yarmouth. It then flew north, landing on the rocky islets between Madeleine Point and the Cousin's Island bridge. Unfortunately - to my patch-listing chagrin - it was displaced by a Bald Eagle in the few minutes it took me to get to Sandy Point, and I was unable to relocate it.

Zane Baker just called (1:15) with a Snowy Owl report from Yarmouth. The bird is in a field on Ledge Road. As you drive down Ledge from North Road, the spot is on the left near #364. Look towards the red barn.

Re: [Maine-birds] Re: Western Grebe Middle Bay, Harpswell -- NO

Hi all,

My Saturday Morning Birdwalk group and I ventured further afield than usual this morning in order to visit the Wilson's Cove Trail.  The parking lot for the preserve is on the west side of Rte 123, and is 0.6 miles south of Whistler's Way, where the grebe was first reported. It affords wonderful views of Middle Bay, and you can see as far north as Simpson's Point - but is much closer to more of the open bay. Unfortunately, duck hunter activity eliminated waterbird activity close to the cove, but we spent a while scanning the bay in all directions, to no avail.

The Western Grebe was not seen this morning or yesterday afternoon despite searches reported to me. Besides Simpsons Point, one might try Wilson's Cove Trail part way down Harpswell Neck (http://hhltmaine.org/conserved-land/public-access/charles-norton-easement/) or Lookout Point (not seen there yesterday afternoon, though).
