Re: [Maine-birds] REMINDER: A Birder's Guide To Everything (tickets by Apr 24)

Dave and other avian-cinema enthusiasts:

Last week we did reach the threshold so the movie will be showing tomorrow evening. Thank you to all who reserved tickets and made this event possible!

Tickets are still available online (http://www.tugg.com/events/8831) or you can contact me directly.

Please don't forget to print your tickets before arriving at the theater. If you don't have access to a printer (or want to save a tree), you can present your tickets on your mobile device when you arrive at the theater.

Thanks again everyone. Hope to see you tomorrow night!

With less than two days left to reach the threshold for ticket sales, I wanted to post a last appeal to come see the new film "A Birder's Guide to Everything". This is a fantastic coming-of-age film and probably the best, or at least most accurate, birding movie to date.

This event is organized through tugg.com and will only be held if enough people reserve tickets by April 24th. The movie will be played on May 1st at the Cinemagic in Westbrook and ticket sales will continue until that date, but only if we reach the threshold by the 24th.

Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end   time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 8 hours

Official Counter:        Katrina Fenton

Observers:

Visitors:
A mother and daughter clad in magenta and fluorescent orange provided the
only slash of color to the day, a pair of tulips blooming in a world of
olive, brown, and pewter. The hawkwatch had 13 visitors.

Weather:
Today's weather was far from the best April usually has to offer. Thick
clouds were suspended like gray insulation from a lowering ceiling. Fog
oozed across the distance, blotting Portland from view in the morning
before dissipating to an opaque milky wash. The ocean coughed up a fitful
SE wind that became more persistent in the afternoon. Temperatures
struggled to reach, then hold at 40F.

Raptor Observations:
There was one migrant among the 15 raptors seen before 1:00pm, a
Broad-winged Hawk feeling the pressure to head north. The afternoon brought
a few more migrants ahead of tomorrow's rain. The highlight of the day was
a Merlin turning lazy circles over an Osprey in front of the hawkwatch.

Non-raptor Observations:
There were 37 species observed today. Hawkwatch Junco felt compelled to put
a Chipping Sparrow in its place, swooping in with his best Sharp-shinned
Hawk impression.

Non-raptor Migrants:
Common Loon- 2
Double-crested Cormorant- 38
Tree Swallow (northbound)- 1    (southbound)- 13
Yellow-rumped Warbler- 1
Brown-headed Cowbird- 1

Predictions:
Rain is on the way for tonight into tomorrow. There may be a break in the
weather in the afternoon, with a few sunny breaks and a SW wind. If the
rain clears out early enough, there could be some birds to count.

[Maine-birds] "Winter" Gulls

I suppose it's just indicative of the kind of spring we're having (not
having?), but I was somewhat surprised to find at least 3 Iceland Gulls
and 1 Glaucous Gull still hanging out with the Herring Gulls at the
Flood Farm in Clinton this morning.

[Maine-birds] Bangor Essex Woods Rusty Blackbirds still present

It appears that all of the RUSTY BLACKBIRDS I saw on 4/16 are still hanging around Essex Street Woods at 6:15 pm today.    Across the trail from the actual marsh, in the swampy wood thickets on the Watchmaker St. end of the trail (on the left before the large open field), in the same general area Craig reported some last week I saw and heard several in a bare tree above the marsh.   Several were calling and among their calls was that high squeaky sliding note that’s soo not-Grackle sounding.   They took off as a group flying in the general direction of the field and I estimated between 18-20 (in line with the earlier sighting where they were easy to count).

Also seen were a BLUE-WINGED TEAL pair in the first small open water area on the right from the Essex Street side of the trail.

[Maine-birds] Bowdoinham palm warblers

April 29, a quick walk around the farm yielded 22 species, nothing spectacular
but 6 quite quiet palm warblers, like Jeff Wells, that let me get close to them. They were
working a fence line at the edge of a pasture, down low.

Singing winter wren since April 17, nesting bluebirds, the return of a male
cardinal, for us something unusual.

Others included
tree swallows (also nesting)
mallard (nesting nearby)
downy woodpecker
hairy woodpecker
song, white-throated, chipping sparrows
goldfinch
purple finch
junco
phoebe
robin
red-winged blackbird
crow
white-breasted nuthatch
(first red-breasted in almost six months seen April 28)
bluejay
mourning dove
black-capped chickadee

Weather:
Winds started out this morning out of the east, but swung around eventually
to the south by mid-afternoon. The sky was mostly cloudy, with some sunny
breaks. The temperature peaked at 53F, but a fairly steady breeze kept a
chill in the air.

Raptor Observations:
A nice flight of Broad-winged Hawks took place today. No large kettles, but
a steady flight kept us on our toes. Local birds were not very active,
until late afternoon when one of the Broad-winged Hawk pairs became more
visible.

Non-raptor Observations:
30 species were seen or heard from the summit today. Other birds deemed
migrating were few, but included:
33 Double-crested Cormorants
6 Tree Swallows
2 European Starlings
1 Great Blue Heron

Predictions:
Looks like east and southeasterly winds in the 10mph range will be on tap
again tomorrow under an overcast sky. Rain will be moving in in the
afternoon, so it remains to be seen if we see a flight ahead of this
approaching system.

Along with the continuing swallow flock over downtown Gardiner this morning there are also a bunch of Yellow-rumped Warblers. RE: [Maine-birds] Tree/Barn swallow flock & kinglets

Here in West Kennebunk I have noticed the heightened kinglet presence as well. Spring usually brings just a few uttering only call notes-this time around have seen 6-8 or more every day for over a month and have heard consistent singing; I had never really heard the ruby throat song before-very appealing!   Also had numerous tree swallows checking out houses but the drab weather of the last week  or so has sent them away again...Sharon in West K.

[Maine-birds] MDI Snowy Owl, Laughing Gull

Yesterday, while exploring Acadia National Park’s Seawall area, a lone Laughing Gull was my first of the year.

Today, driving home from Bar Harbor, I noticed a crow mobbing a large whitish raptor. I pulled off the road and had a brief look at a Snowy Owl before it flew off to the northeast!

[Maine-birds] Tri colored hybrid Dunstan

It appears the Tricolored Heron X snowy egret is at Dunstan landing. There was a nice comparison to the Tricolored and snowys that were also nearby. It was as gray as the tricolored, no rusty yellow on the back, white underneath and some white coming down from the head down the neck, black legs and beak. Yellow lores on beak. When it flew you could see some white on the wings.

Interestingly it was doing the foot action of a snowy egret where they shuffle their feet to attract the fish. Even though this bird did not have yellow feet it was doing the behavior.

[Maine-birds] Long-Eared Owl?

Last fall I had a Long-Eared Owl at home.  I only found it once despite frequent looking and listening after that night.  I do have a pair of Barred Owls in the neighborhood, and I see or hear one of them almost daily at my home (likes to roost right next to my driveway).  Last night, however, in addition to hearing the Barred Owl, I believe I also heard a Long-Eared Owl again.  I didn't see it, but the bird was fairly close and I was able to hear its relatively distinct call of several singular hoots (not "wails" or varying in pitch like you might expect a Barred to make), each spaced apart by a few seconds.  Not enough evidence to guarantee it was a Long-Eared Owl, but having had one a few months ago I wouldn't be surprised if this is a visitor who may have a nest somewhere else in the neighborhood.

[Maine-birds] Vernal Lakes in western Maine

All that snow did finally melt, and now we have vernal lakes on the farms in western Maine, and the ducks love it. On McNeil Road in Fryeburg Harbor today we had ~140 green winged teal, and 40+ black ducks and ring-necked ducks. Also on the lakes were mallards, canada geese and greater yellowlegs. On the Saco were wood ducks and hooded mergansers, and on the real lakes the loons have returned, delighting us with their wilderness calls.

[Maine-birds] Blue-headed Vireo, New Harbor

Got good looks at a BH Vireo singing at the edge of my backyard forest just now.  Also heard mid-morning, strangely, was a prolonged hoot-fest by a pair of Great Horned Owls, back in the woods--  they went back and forth (one higher and faster than the other) for about half an hour, which seemed unusual during the day.

Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end   time: 11:30:00
Total observation time: 3.5 hours

Official Counter:        Katrina Fenton

Observers:        Barb Brenneman, Derek Lovitch, Steve Barker

Visitors:
There were 22 visitors today, 6 of which braved the approaching rain for
the hawkwatch workshop.

Weather:
Not the ideal weather for the first day of Feathers Over Freeport, but at
least the morning was fairly dry. Patchy drizzle moved in by 11:00a.m., and
light but steadier rain followed an hour later, decreasing visibility and
ending the count for the day. A damp wind blew out of the SE at 5-10mph,
and temperatures held steady at 6C.

Raptor Observations:
There was a decent little push of birds ahead of the rain, just in time for
the hawkwatch workshop. A good assortment of raptor species came right
overhead, falcons, buteos, accipiters, Ospreys, and Turkey Vultures. The
flight shut down once the rain became steadier, and the final bird seen was
a local Osprey heading off with lunch.

Non-raptor Observations:
Thirty species were observed, ranging from migrating warblers to the local
American Crows.

Non-raptor Migrants:
Tree Swallow (northbound)- 3  (southbound)- 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler- 9
Palm Warbler- 3
warbler sp.- 6
blackbird sp.- 57
American Goldfinch- 1

Predictions:
The rain showers should be wrapping up before the count begins tomorrow
morning. Clouds may take their time clearing, and the wind will be out of
the north at 5-10mph. Birds should be moving in the wake of today's rain,
and if the wind stays light, we could have a good flight.

[Maine-birds] pileated woodpeckers - Augusta

I had three pileated woodpeckers at my  house in Augusta this morning. They have been drumming and calling all day. Great looks.

Friday morning in my yard in one view of my binoculars, I had Fox, Savannah, song, tree, chipping, dark-eyed juncos, and two white throated sparrow (one was tan morph). It was great. My two fox sparrows aren't around today, but I had them visiting all week.

Only 2 KESTRELS & 1 (resident) EAGLE seen.

I picked up a dead BROWN THRASHER and saw 4 others alive and well.

No other thrushs identified.

A handful of PALM WARBLERS are new since yesterday.

COMMON EIDERS have increased quite a bit around the island in recent days.
Some are likely migrants but a lot appear to be returning breeding residents.

[Maine-birds] Wesserunsett Lake, Madison

A pair of Common Loons & a pair of Common Mergansers were in the several acres of open water off of Hayden Brook & Lakewood this morning. An adult Bald Eagle was on the edge of the ice not far away, but the loons & mergansers did not seem concerned. The loons were later observed diving under the ice and surfacing in small openings nearby.

Common Loons have been reported flying over the lake & calling since April 22.

The main body of the lake is still ice-covered.

[Maine-birds] Piping plovers

Deb and I saw two pair and one single piping plover on Mile Beach at Reid St. Park yesterday. IF&W together with Audubon were staking out safety areas and posting warning signs for the plovers.
Was a beautiful day at the beach!

Cheers,
Dave

[Maine-birds] Sidney sightings

On my bird jog this a.m. I had what I think was a field sparrow singing briefly at the corner near my house. I listened online when I got in and the songs match.

Also noteworthy, first loon on newly iced out Messalonskee and several dc cormorants. About 10 wood ducks in a flooded field, singing pine warblers, a foy hermit thrush, three flickers, a pair of bluebirds and the Goodhue Farm kestrel rounded things out.
