[Maine-birds] Thick-billed Murre at Cliff House

There was a Thick-billed Murre in fairly close to the point at the Cliff House in Ogunquit today at 1:30pm. It kind of had a look like a Dovekie before getting the scope on it.

[Maine-birds] Eastern Prom - Barrow's, Glaucous Gull and Scaup

The male Barrow's Goldeneye reported recently is still continuing just off the boat launch. It was seen associating with a small group of Common Goldeneye. Also a 1st or 2nd winter Glaucous Gull was in the area as well as 2 groups of scaup. The first group was in close and contained seven greater scaup, the second group had 29 individuals and was too far out to ID.

Over at Spring Point in South Portland, there was a solo female greater scaup.

[Maine-birds] PWM Snowy

Was out getting something near the mall and decided to take a night time ride by the airport to see if I could spot the SNOWY OWL that has been there on my recent visits. Lo and behold it was there not too far from the first access road to the runway just past the driveway in to National Semiconductor. It was on top of the large pile of snow that is there. Did not seem to mind me taking a couple of photos. Snowy Owl Photo

[Maine-birds] Barred Owl

My husband called me at work to tell me a Barred Owl was sitting on the shepherds hook of our feeders. The Owl flew down and ate a vole and flew up into the tree. He was still there when I arrived home. That morning we had caught a mouse in the live trap and I had put it on the railing near the front door for my husband to dispose of. I asked where it was and he said the trap was on the deck and the door had been torn off and the mouse was gone. I'm thinking Mr/Mrs Owl had an earlier meal! As of 7pm tonight she/he had flown back down to the shepherds hook and was sitting there all puffed up probably waiting for the next vole.

[Maine-birds] Barrow's Goldeneye

Spotted paddling of around 26 birds (+/-) on Pushaw Stream, near the weir, in Hirundo Wildlife Refuge, on Saturday, February 21, midday.

[Maine-birds] Fryeburg Harbor/Fryeburg - Rusties, Larks, Buntings & Longspurs

This morning, John Heath and I found three continuing Rusty Blackbirds at Hill Farm on Harbor Rd, No. Fryeburg. At the horse paddock on Corn Shop Rd there were large numbers of Snow Buntings and Horned Larks, plus a bonus of two Lapland Longspur.

A large mixed flock of Larks and Buntings were at Riverside Farm, on Rt 113, just south of its junction with Harbor Rd.

It is an extremely pretty area that is a broad flood plain with expansive, wide open agricultural fields.

Mike Fahay's duck looks like an immature male Greater Scaup, as suggested by others. The wide, black tip is a character of male Greater Scaup. The pale band behind the wide, blackish tip is a character seen on female and immature scaup, especially as the bill color begins to change for summer. See these examples:

Could it be a hybrid? Redheads show a similar but more distinct pale subterminal band but a broader, complete black tip. A few hybrid Redhead x Greater Scaup are known, but I don't see anything on Mike's bird to suggest a hybrid with Redhead or any other Aythya duck (e.g. different head shape, back and sides being more similar with flanks less pale and contrasting, etc.) Wing characters might help. Here are some photos of adult male hybrids (from captive parents). A bid difficult to compare given Mike's bird is an immature male.

[Maine-birds] More Bohemian Waxwings

Hello, all,

I'm new to this group, but wanted to add to the many BOWA reports of late.

My wife and I came across a flock of about two dozen Bohemian Waxwings in a tree on King Road in Lisbon around 12:15 this afternoon (Wednesday). The tree was immediately adjacent to the road on the south side, and about three-tenths of a mile east of the intersection with Littlefield Road. We didn't see any Cedar Waxwings mixed in with them (though we did see a few of those, too, a few minutes later and a little further down the road). Having just moved to Maine from Philadelphia at the beginning of the year, this was the first time that either of us had seen Bohemian Waxwings, so it was all rather exciting!

[Maine-birds] Midcoast

The odd scaup like duck continues at the upper Alwives pond. Would love to hear any definitive info on this duck, like what is it? Then going around the corner after St. Patrick's church on the wires crossing the road,just perch was a Barred Owl. Unconcerned with me whatsoever gave me amazing views. I was literally under the bird looking up as it was looking down on me. Amazing!!

[Maine-birds] Bohemian Waxwings - Kennebunk

About 25 Bohemian Waxwings flew over my house in Kennebunk this morning. They appeared to be heading toward the Brown Street/Day Street area where the big Robin flock tends to hang out.

[Maine-birds] Common Redpoll and Eastern Bluebirds in Scarborough

I came home this afternoon to find a Common Redpoll in the tray feeder then shortly afterwards two pairs of Eastern Bluebirds showed up to feast on the seeds and suet. This is the third or fourth time they have been here since the storms started in Feb. What a treat.

[Maine-birds] Belfast Bay census of Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015

Gary Gulezian, Tom Aversa, and myself did the census. The spell of cold weather has now converted large sections of Belfast Harbor (80 %) and the Passagassawakeag River (95%) to being ice-covered, which cut down on the number of individual birds and species found. Also, cold temperatures (-13 to 5 F.), deep snow, and sea smoke hampered birding. Still, 693 individuals from 11 species were found with Herring Gulls and Mallards again dominating the numbers. Highlights of the day were two Iceland Gulls (1 adult, 1 first cycle) and three female Common Mergansers.

Comments: Observers were Ron Harrell, Gary Gulezian, and Tom Aversa. Cold weather (-13 to 5 F.), deep snow, and sea smoke hampered birding, and the recent spell of harsh winter weather seems to have caused the number(11) of species to drop. Still, 693 individual birds were counted with Herring Gulls and Mallards dominating the numbers. Also, numbers of birds were effected by the amount of frozen water, especially in Belfast Harbor)(80% and the Passagassawakeag River(95%).
