[Maine-birds] White-winged Gulls in Bangor, 12/31

Hi everyone,

This afternoon I stopped at the Bangor Waterfront to check out the gulls. There were maybe 75 Herrings and a couple dozen Ring-billeds when I got there at 2:30 PM. When I left 90 min later, I had counted 266 Herrings, 3 Great Black-backeds, 2 Icelands, and 1 Glaucous. Almost all of the gulls provided excellent views as they dropped in and sat on the nearby ice.

[Maine-birds] my 2015 big photo year

Hello and happy new birding new year,

The goal this year is to get as many different species of birds with camera. I identified 258 for the year and took photos of 230 of them. The biggest pain was the camera did not focus fast enough to get the barn owl, but I have a nice photo of the barn window he was sitting in. https://www.flickr.com/photos/22247688@N04/16520470018/in/album-72157650148234969/

And of course for other birds I missed, there are branches or something in the way for the camera to focus on instead of the bird.

The Western Tanager and one Ruby-crowned Kinglet continue near the
water treatment plant along the Saco Riverwalk. 9 Common Mergansers
and 6 Hooded Mergansers were on the river.

[Maine-birds] Harpswell/Brunswick/Freeport CBC

The CBC is Sunday, January 3, and count week has started.

So to echo Marie Jordan's post...if you live in the count area and have an unusual bird sighting, we'd love to hear about it...and maybe relocate on count day.

[Maine-birds] Rough-Legged Hawks

Two of them at Scarborough Marsh this morning around 10:30. One was an adult light morph. The other I believe was a juvenile dark morph. Both were vying for the very tip of a dead spruce. Then the crows arrived.

[Maine-birds] Chat at dawn

The Samoset chat continues at its exact location along the Lighthouse/Breakwater Road adjacent to the open white gate. It forages mostly on the ground among the browned vegetation. There are a very few berries available in the vicinity, but the bird focuses primarily on exploring leaves on the ground and picking at the undersides of hanging dead leaves. The bright yellow breast made a nice counterpoint to the new snow cover.

[Maine-birds] MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND REPORT

A young HARRIER scanned the island this morning and continued on its way, bucking the wind towards Grand Manan.
The interesting thing about the brief visit was the interaction between the raptor and the few dozen PURPLE SANDPIPERS.
The predator seemed to ignore the prey.

The prey in turn, flew just under and ahead of the Harrier, easily close enough for a strike, for nearly a mile.

That's about as close as you get to "bearding the lion".

Now it gets more interesting.

While writing this, a second HARRIER, an adult male, cruised the length of the island.

He flared several times at grounded sandpipers near the water but he continued off shore, again towards Grand Manan.
And again a flock of PURPLE SANDPIPERS were ignored as they flew close escort.

Sooooooooooo. 2 Harriers before noon. Post now or wait to see if another arrives?

Well, I waited and, after about 3 hours, I did see a second adult Harrier, making 3 for the day. All were headed towards Grand Manan.

While keeping an eye out for raptors, a couple SNOW BUNTINGS stopped by the patio for a bit of millet.

I had single Buntings there a couple times yesterday during the height of the storm.
Today their companion ranks as Bird Of The Day: a single LAPLAND LONGSPUR.

Any more sightings of the King Eider? I'm thinking
of going to look tomorrow (Thursday)...

[Maine-birds] Saco Riverwalk: Ruby-crowned Kinglet...

With 6-8" of snow on the ground, the only lingering migrant who I
could locate this afternoon along the Saco Riverwalk was a
Ruby-crowned Kinglet. No sign of any warblers or the Western Tanager.

[Maine-birds] Count week for the Biddeford/Kennebunkport CBC start Tomorrow Dec. 30th

Hope you all are enjoying southern Maine’s first snow of the season - we were hoping we could get thru the weekend for our counts without any measureable snow - but that was not to be.

I enjoyed lots of activity from my usual winter visitors at my feeders today - but nothing unusual. When following the reports on this list serve, you know there have been some unusual birds (out of range or late departing) seen in the area, especially on “the Hill” in Saco. Maybe those birds will start showing up at feeders now that there is snow on the ground.

So, if you are anywhere in the count circle and observe an unusual bird - starting tomorrow - Dec. 30^th - I would appreciate your contacting me so we can count the bird for count week - or better yet - be able to relocate the bird on Jan. 2^nd Saturday - our count day! Count week also includes Jan. 3, 4, and 5 so even after Saturday, if you observe a bird that is out of range or one that is not easily seen every day please let me know. Please try to get a photo of your sighting if possible. Thanks.

Have a great new year observing our Maine birds as well as those afar if you have the opportunity to travel. Birding is an excellent excuse to travel ! J

Well the consensus is that they certainly do come to feeders, both suet

I had 3 a week ago at once, which was a first. But they normally visit my suet as well. Mostly one at a time and once in a while two. Suet remains 10 ft off ground on large oak. I love watching these little guys and their cryptic plumage.

Hi Bob,

We have creepers that come, frequently, to one of our suet feeders, 6 feet off the ground, on a tree at the edge of the woods. Sometimes they drop to the ground to pick up fallen pieces. We've also had them on the deck floor feeding on seed spilled from deck feeders, although we stopped putting feeders on the deck this year, as there are enough feeders hanging from a stand on the lawn to keep the birds well provisioned and happy.

A female Pileated Woodpecker visits multiple times, daily, at the same suet feeder. The male shows up only occasionally. This past week a couple of Golden-crowned kinglets have been making numerous visits throughout the day. Normally we see than at the feeders only a few times throughout the winter.

For the last three days I have had a Brown Creeper coming to a hanging
feeder suspended eighteen inches from a window. It is filled with
hulled sunflower seeds, meaties. Only once a day never more. I have
never had one come to a feeder before this. Even to the suet feeders.
Has anyone else observed this. They are common on the trees in the yard
but never on the feeders.

[Maine-birds] Active feeder in the storm; including a Song Sparrow

Hi all -- today's storm brings the first truly active feeder day to our house. Numbers had been gradually growing but today's crowd is much more satisfying. Highlights:

5 Am. Tree Sparrow

3 W-t Sparrow

1 Song Sparrow (not sure where this one's been hiding, but not here; I've kicked up a few recently along the Manset Shore Rd n. of Hinckley Yachts ... closer to Alder Lane)

13 +/- D-e Juncos

2 N. Cardinal

Am. Goldfinch, B-c Chickadees, Blue Jays, Mourning Doves, Am. Crows, and one Downy W-p

0 Pine Siskins, 0 Purple Finch

Have 4 at my feeders. They've been here a good month or so. Also have a stunning male Red-bellied Woody who frequently visits the suet and occasionally hangs from the tube feeder.

[Maine-birds] Northeast Harbor common loon

Cold and windy, this common loon was the only floating bird close enough to photograph. Several common eiders were a few hundred yards further out. Maybe the high winds had something to do with the low number of foraging sea birds.

[Maine-birds] Ross's Goose - Still hangin'

A side trip on way to pick up my "serviced" snowblower in Westbrook found the Ross's far back in the Stroudwater field.

I suspect the snow may move it along, but, who knows, maybe it will stick around for January 1st when all of our yearly registers are set back to zero. It wouldn't be a bad way to start the New year, with a ROGO at the top of our 2016 lists.

[Maine-birds] Clay-colored Sparrow continues, Wells, 12/28

Hello all,

Derek and I re-located the Clay-colored Sparrow we found on the southern York County CBC on 12/14, in the same neighborhood. Today it was at the corner of Bayberry and Dike Streets in the early afternoon, just a block from where we initially found it. This birdy neighborhood is bordered by Furbish Ave., Rte 1, and the Ogunquit River.

Adult female, appears a couple of times a month. Never stays for more than a minute. It could possibly visit more often because if I am not glancing at the feeder I would miss it.

At the risk of being redundant, I can report that the Western Tanager,
Common Yellowthroat and Yellow, Nashville, and Blackburnian Warblers
continue along the Saco Riverwalk between the Front St. parking area
and the "magic hillside" (which is 1/4 mile downriver). The Tennesse
Warbler appears to have moved on (last seen Sunday, Dec 20th).
Hopefully the others will follow suit shortly.

I had a mosquito on the Portland Christmas Bird Count on Long Island last week. I could not believe it. It was very cold and windy overall but we were on sheltered side of the island at the time. I wanted to add it to the list since it is the state bird and all... :-)

[Maine-birds] Wigeons at Bass Harbor Marsh

This morning around 1030 we observed both the American Wigeon and the Eurasian Wigeon in the Bass Harbor Marsh. We enjoyed nice long looks at them feeding and paddling around together. We missed the Northern Pintail there.

However, en route home we took Highway 182 (also known as Blacks Woods Road) and stopped to bird at a pond right next to the highway in Franklin. We saw a female Northern Pintail there mixed in with large numbers of Mallards and Canada Geese! These ponds are heavily used by waterfowl in the fall and early winter as long as they are not iced over. Traffic is bad, so just be careful!

The pond is one-tenth of a mile west of Goodwin Road in Franklin along Highway 182.

I just saw my first YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT with my grandmother along
Timber Point Trail in Biddeford. I was pointing out a Song Sparrow
perched in a shrub when I noticed a yellow-throated bird being sneaky
just below. What a surprise!

[Maine-birds] EURASIAN WIGEON still at Bass Harbor Marsh mid-day today; Mt. Desert Island

Hi all -- I met up with the Lima family today at the Bass Harbor Marsh on MDI, right around noon. We had the two species of wigeon close to "Abner's Bridge" (birds on the north side of Rte 102), and with some work and a scope we also relocated the drake N. Pintail. This was a flood high tide, so the birds were working in the flooded grass. Probably easier to find them with the tide's out just a bit and they are back in the channel.

The Limas have good cameras, so maybe they'll post a pic or two in eBird. Mine are bad but diagnostic.

Also noted one "mallard" that was all pale yellow/white. Curious.
