[Maine-birds] Cape Elizabeth to Biddeford Pool (BLBW, TEWA, RUBL, COYE, etc; no MGWA or KIEI), 11/30

Hi all,
Jeannette and I spent the day birding from Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth to Biddeford Pool:
- no MacGillivray's Warbler, 8:00-9:15. Many other were still looking when we left; I assume nothing was detected. 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler and 1 Snow Bunting were present.
- (we did not look for the GRASSHOPPER SPARROW at Dyer Point, but we were informed it was there).
- 1 Double-created Cormorant, Grondin Pond, Scarborough.
- 35 Dunlin, Pine Point, Scarborough.
- Saco Yacht Club:
1 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER continues.
1 TENNESSEE WARBLER continues
1 Common Yellowthroat continues.
1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet continues.
1 Rusty Blackbird
- no KING EIDER at Biddeford Pool, but over 70 Red-necked Grebes, Black-legged Kittiwake, Razorbill, 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, etc.

-Derek

[Maine-birds] Belfast Bay census of Monday, Nov. 30, 2015

Gary Gulezian and I did the census this morning.  The weather was cold, but visibility was excellent, and we had a good morning birding.  Highlights included Lesser Black-backed Gull, Glaucous Gull, Peregrine Falcon, and 2 Double-crested Cormorants that are still hanging around.  The complete report can be found on ebird by clicking below:

[Maine-birds] Banded Herring Gull -- MDI Seawall

Hi all -- minor note here, mentioning the presence of a readable-banded adult Herring Gull at Seawall Picnic Area in Acadia. Roosting and preening with a crowd of other gulls directly off the western cul de sac. 30 feet from car parking. Seen on Saturday.

The band is red with white lettering, on the left leg. Code A1A. I've submitted the sighting to the banding community.

Best,
Craig

[Maine-birds] NO King Eider at Cliff House in Ogunquit today; in addition, Cliff House now closed to the public

The King Eider that had been reported earlier off the Cliff House in Ogunquit was not seen today. (Perhaps he's moved on to Biddeford Pool).  In addition, a security guard approached to say that the Cliff House is off limits now to the public due to construction, and will remain so probably for the winter while renovation is underway.

[Maine-birds] Sandhill Cranes - ON THE MOVE!

Jenna Pettipas and Susan Wrisley spotted THE flock of Sandhill Cranes today....in Haverhill, MA at Kenoza Lake!!  23 birds heading south!

Some of you may remember this same flock from northern Maine last fall on Thanksgiving weekend.  Last year the flock of 24 birds was tracked through New Hampshire, Massachusetts Connecticut and Pennsylvania from 11/27/14 to 11/29/14.

Their post with photos is below.

Steve Mirick
Bradford/Haverhill, MA (Home of Kenoza Lake)

I know it is not in NH, but Susan Wrisley and I saw 23 Sandhill Cranes fly over us while we were checking out Winnekenni Castle at Kenoza Lake in Haverhill, Ma around 3:45pm. We had finished birding for the day and were interested in the castle. When we got back to the car we heard an unusual bird call/noise. We got out of the car to look around and saw this flock heading toward us. They circled once (or twice - not really sure... I was too excited) and then flew in a south/south east-ish direction.

Crane Pics:

I apologize if this post is unacceptable since it is technically Mass. but felt that it was close enough to NH border to be significant.

[Maine-birds] Re: Grasshopper Sparrow @ Dyer's Point, Cape Elizabeth

I tried yesterday late morning to photograph that bird also (not knowing what it was either), could never get a good look, it seemed that every tourist who visited Maine for Thanksgiving decided to visit Dyer Point, the bird would flush and hide under rocks and not come out for 20-30 minutes at a time, after trying for over an hour I gave up, glad you got a shot, great catch!

[Maine-birds] GBHEs Nov 25 Dennysville, and St. Stephen NB

We were surprised to see a Great Blue Heron on the partially frozen Denny's River, Rte 86 near Rte 1 Wednesday afternoon, and not long after that we saw one just east of St. Stephen, New Brunswick.
Near the rocky shoreline here at Cow Point (Washington County) Wally saw a Razorbill the first week of November, saw it again on Nov 17, and once more on Nov. 22. He thinks it is the same bird since it was in aprox. the same spot each time. Also off the rocks here,on Nov. 25,  the first Common Goldeneye he has seen here this season.

[Maine-birds] Probable MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER, Kettle Cove, 11/27

Derek Lovitch and I just had a probable/apparent/what-else-could-it-be MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER at Kettle Cove.

We both heard a few odd-sounding chip notes at the edge of the large clearing, initially assuming it was a distant Yellow-rump, or then maybe a yellowthroat, but it didn't sound quite right. As we got closer, Derek got a brief view of it at the edge of a bittersweet-covered thicket, and noted a gray-hooded warbler with bright yellow undersides and a relatively long, narrow tail flicked up before dropping back down. It called a few more times, and the call note clicked as a MacGillivray's, but unfortunately I was unable to get a view.

We've spent the past hour trying to relocate it unsuccessfully, with increasing wind. Might check back later, but if anyone is in the area, it might be worth a check. Take the trail to the right of the bathrooms, over the bridge, and up to the main clearing. The bird was on the south side of the largest clearing.

[Maine-birds] Nashville and Orange-crowned Warbler - Portland

Today I relocated the Nashville Warbler I found on 11/20 near the Riverton Trolley Park in Portland. Today the Nashville was accompinied by an Orange-crowned Warbler! Both were foraging with a flock of Chickadees along a hillside next to the Riverside Recycling center, roughly at 43.706277, -70.320983.

Parking for the trail is across from the Hannaford on Riverside near a baseball field. Keep to the right once you hit the main trail and follow signs for the Sebago to the Sea trail. That trail will take you down along a barbed wire fence and it is around this area were the two warblers were seen today. Listen for their high-pitched chip notes that both were giving frequently.

Some photos can be seen as part of my eBird report;

and Yellow-rumped Warbler here too, and others have had Orange-crowned
Warbler, making at least 8 different November warblers for the
location. Wow!

The Blackburnian was observed near the parking area around 9:40am, the
other birds were all seen on the brushy hillside just beyond the water
treatment plant.

[Maine-birds] King Eider - Biddeford Pool

During the Biddeford Pool count today, we had a male King Eider swimming near (and later sitting and preening on) Stage Island.  We viewed it from Biddeford Pool north shore around noon today, but I suspect it could be seen just as easily from Hill's Beach for those wanting to try.

[Maine-birds] South Thomaston Dovekie

Yesterday Glenn Jenks found a grounded Dovekie in the roadway on RTE 73 just north the Keag Store in So Thomaston (street number is #93.) The bird proved elusive to capture and entered a needle-in-a-haystack, weedy thicket at roadside. I checked the spot this early morning, with similar negative results. This bird is a likely victim of the daylong, whipping ocean winds of last Friday.

[Maine-birds] Saco: Tennessee, Yellow, and mystery Warbler...

Hello all,

This morning, along the Saco River Walk, Marian Zimmerman and I saw
the TENNESSEE WARBLER (found and last seen on Wednesday). Before
finding that bird, I photographed a late YELLOW WARBLER. We also had a
brief look at a possible Black-throated Green Warbler from the parking
area on Front Street. No sign of Orange-crowned Warbler, but I'll keep
looking.

Re: [Maine-birds] Large flocks of geese and gulls in Cumberland

I was able to briefly stop by Thornhurst(ebird) and Springbrook(ebird) farms yesterday and there was a good variety of sizes/shapes/colors of CANG but nothing that stood out save one CANG at Springbrook that hinted at a smaller variety of canada or possible cackler. I have been burned making predictions before so I will leave it to people who have more time and better lighting than I did to make that call. There is also one at Thornhurst that I saw last weekend that has a blotchy white pattern on the front of the neck. Not sure if it is partial leucystic or some sort of hybrid thing. The Thornhurst crowd has broken up a bit and was found yesterday in four or five different areas of the fields. Still fun to check out the grounds around there though, never know what you may find picking through the grasses or hunting whatever is picking through the grasses!

Cheers.

[Maine-birds] Northern Maine Birds: Hybrid Greater White-fronted Geese and Barrows Goldeneye

Its been a gloomy week in northern Maine but I saw a couple unusual waterfowl which were fun to think about during these long nights.

On Tuesday, there three new Greater White-fronted Geese at the mill pond in down town Limestone.
An adult White-front was preening on shore with about 20 Canada Geese and two juvenile White-fronts were across the pond.  I was able to get some pics of these:

These brought  the known total of Greater White-fronted Geese in northern Maine this fall to six. Even more interesting than these uncommon geese, were two unusual looking "Canada" Geese that were with the adult bird.  (These can be seen just to the left of the adult in the photo).  These birds had unusually big tan cheek patches, dark breasts and the black on the necks transitioned gradually into the breast color unlike Canada Geese where the black neck sock ends cleanly at the base of the neck.  On closer look I found the birds bills are a pinkish shade and there was some specks of white on the face.

Yesterday I relocated this apparent family group  with a very big flock of Canada Geese a couple miles away at Trafton Lake Park in Limestone.  The adult White-front was again with these two unusual geese. I was able this time to observe the feet and legs of the mystery geese.  These were greenish:https:

No sign of the two Greater White-fronted juvies at Trafton.

After considering the options, it appears pretty likely that these unusual geese are juvenile Greater White-fronted X Canada Geese hybrids.  I've posted a bunch of documentation photos in my Flickr photostream if you are a goose geek like me and want to look.

Last Sunday, I saw another apparent hybrid waterfowl: a drake Barrow's X Common Goldeneye in the St. John River near the Acadian Cross overlook in Madawaska.  The bird was with more than 100 Common Goldeneyes and the bird flew up and drifted down this section of river a couple times.  https://flic.kr/p/B6GjfE  The bird had a small bill, a somewhat bean-shaped cheek patch and a long "mane" but sported a lot more white on the back than a typical Barrow's male.

Other birdy notables this week include a very late Black-and-White Warbler reported in a yard in Chapman, hundreds of Common Redpolls, a late Merlin in Caribou and a first cycle Iceland Gull at Collins Pond in Caribou.  Usually rare in northern Maine, Northern Cardinals are apparently showing at a number of local feeders.

Good Birding

[Maine-birds] Kittery to Wells, 11/17 (King Eider, TBMU, REVI, NAWA, RAZO, RTLO migration)

Hi all,

An interesting birding day as Jeannette and I combed the coast from Kittery into Wells. Although we hoped for western vagrants and looked hard for Cave Swallow in particular, we did have some noteworthy sightings.

-drake King Eider, the Cliff house
-1 THICK-BILLED MURRE, Marginal Way, Ogunquit
-1 RED-EYED VIREO and 1 NASHVILLE WARBLER, Cherry Lane, Ogunquit
-Razorbill, scattered individuals throughout the day, most feeding close to shore (after commenting on how many Razorbills there were on such calm conditions, we spotted the murre, recent flurry of in- and near-shore alcids bear further watching)
- Red-throated Loons, heading south all day in small flocks; 50+ in water off Marginal Way
-other late migrants including Ruby-crowned Kinglet (4 total), 2 Hermit Thrushes, 2 Snow Buntings at Seapoint Beach, Kittery, 1 Fox Sparrow at Fort Foster, Kittery, also 2 Carolina Wrens at Fort Foster - fewer than usual for this route. Also Harlequin Ducks building at the usual locations led by 28 off Marginal Way.

[Maine-birds] Sandhill Cranes

28 Sandhill Cranes spotted at 2:30pm on Rt 2 as previously posted. Took off after good looks and then found again Martin's Stream Rd...nice looks at both locations. Skip and Linda Small with John Tobin.

[Maine-birds] Sandhill Cranes

AS of 11:45 AM the cranes were in field on Rt. 2 across from the Waste treatment  entrance in Norridgewock about 1.5 m out of the center going towards Farmington.  I could only ID 25 but the ones seen earlier today on Martin Stream Rd in Norridgewock is likely the same flock.

Re: [Maine-birds] Cave Swallow at Eastern Point, Biddeford 11:20 am

More info on the Biddeford Pool bird:
It can be seen from the sharp curve at the north end of Ocean Ave (end of Lester B Orcutt Blvd aka Rt 208). The bird is flying back and forth along the south-facing side of East Pt. (the north side of the cove). That's probably a better place to start rather than walking out to the point to search.

Ken Janes's bird at the mouth of the Mousam River sounds like a classic place for low-flying Cave Swallow.

Good luck to all!

[Maine-birds] NO Townsends Solitaire- Viles Arboretum, Augusta

I have been at the arboretum for about 1.5 hours and met up with 3 other birders who had been here since about 8:30. No sightings yet and for some reason the Piggery Road gates are locked so one needs to park at the DMV parking lot and walk .25 miles down to where the bird was last seen last night (by the ponds and across from the two small red concession stands on the left side of the road.)

I walked the entire length of Piggery Rd approx 1 mile and also around Viles Pond and trails around fields by visitor center.

Very quiet, no robins at all, but a flock of 35 snow buntings in the turn around area at the eastern end of Piggery Road.
