[Maine-birds] Oxford County Boreal Birding (2/28)...

I was in this same area today for a short time however. I did manage easily over 100 Pine Siskins, my first of the winter and a White-winged Crossbill, my first ever!! A great day. I am planning on a trip back this weekend to spend more quality time at this gem of an area. Of course I had 100+ Bohemian Waxwings in Belgrade as they seem to be everywhere I've gone this winter.

[Maine-birds] 30 plus Red Wing Black Birds and Eagle sharing tree in Benton

[Maine-birds] Birding at West Quoddy

Despite heavy seas and a buffeting wind we did see Thick-billed Murres from West Quoddy Head - as well as six White-winged Scoters and a sweet flock of 21 Purple Sandpipers who were bathing and preening in a tidal pool below the light. AND - a welcome sign of spring to us was a flock of beautiful male American Robins seen on the South Lubed Road on the way to West Quoddy.

Yesterday we birded the waters from Otter Cliffs on the southeast side of MDI. The most interesting birds were 3 Common Murres fairly close to shore. On our way over to Ellsworth we saw 4 Red Crossbills on Highway 182 - the birds were busy doing something in the middle of the highway - we watched for a while but couldn't quite figure it out!

[Maine-birds] Messalonskee Marsh - Waterfowl and Icterids

I arrived at Messalonskee Marsh this afternoon (at 3:50) and scanned the south end of the lake from the old boat launch on Route 27. From my vantage point, I observed Canada geese (5) and Common Goldeneye (7) in the open water where Belgrade Stream empties into the lake. The launch was otherwise quiet... until I returned to my car to leave.

While filling out my eBird report in my car, I heard the "conk-la-ree" song of a single Red-winged Blackbird. Setting back out, I observed a handful of RWBL grouped in the trees along the shoreline. For the next thirty minutes, a steady pulse of Red-winged Blackbirds (45), Common Grackle (12), and a single Rusty Blackbird moved into the area from the south and out to the north. As I left (at 5:00), additional icterids were still moving through the area.

I've had a spring peeper peeping all winter in our partial sunroom which has a lot of larger plants we keep outside in the summer and early fall. At one point, he moved into our heated but cooler garage for a few days. Pleasant sound in winter.

Re: Eagle concentration on the Eastern River: I've always assumed this concentration coincided with the spawning run of smelt up the river, but they always seem more concentrated on the Eastern than on the Cathance, Abby, or Kennebec, which also support spawning smelt. They are definitely in different places this time of year than in the fall, when they seem to be feeding heavily on ducks.

I am still seeing plenty of eagles scavenging on road killed deer by the road and chasing hand-outs from ice fishermen on the lakes that still have ice.

Both Green Point and the mouth of the Abbagadassett River are likely to be alive with eagles - and ducks. There were Canada Geese, Black Ducks, and Mallards at Green Point today.

Rather than buying new binoculars, you might try a binocular harness instead. Your shoulders and upper back support the weight of the binoculars, greatly reducing neck strain, even after a full day of birding.

I am in the market for some smaller, but good binoculars for long hikes and trips. My Mom (some of you may remember her, Betty Boyle) left me a couple of really nice Zeiss 10 x 40s but they are large. I am leaving to bird (and work) in Florida for a few weeks, and would like something smaller and more comfortable for long hot hikes. Any advice would be much appreciated!!!

Hey all,

I birded along Route 16 in Oxford County on Sunday (2/28). Pine Siskins and Crossbills provided an almost non-stop soundtrack for the day. Here are some highlights:

Magalloway Plantation: 1 Gray Jay, 20 Purple Finches, 8 Red Crossbills, 10 White-winged Crossbills, 100+ Pine Siskins, 75 Evening Grosbeaks (estimate of single flock)

Lincoln Plantation: 1 Northern Shrike (near Bennett Rd.), 2 Purple Finches, 10 Red Crossbills, 4 White-winged Crossbills, 50 Pine Siskins, 30 Evening Grosbeaks (at south end of Parmachene Road)

Lower Cupsuptic Township: 2 Boreal Chickadees (Turner Rd.), 10 Purple Finches, 8 White-winged Crossbills, 30 Pine Siskins

I also observed 27 Bohemian Waxwings eating apples along Route 5 in Andover.

[Maine-birds] final weeks of February, Webber Pond. Bremen

the flicker spent the cold, cold weekend mid Feb. clinging to the suet or fluffed up on the platform and then became only an intermittent visitor as the snow vanished.

last weekend on the 21st, several ice fisherman enjoyed a last outing and drew an eagle which seemed to be finding something. Also the geese returned--honking overhead but not landing.

the mallards continue to come in and out at dusk and the geese have landed on the ice once or twice.

there were three bluebirds in my maple tree in the sunlight on Thursday.

lots of birdsong today--wonderful cardinal calls--goldfinches abounding.

have heard the raven fairly often--

[Maine-birds] Mating eagles but no blackbirds at Messalonskee Marsh

Hi folks,

We to Messalonskee Marsh this afternoon to look for blackbirds. I searched for about 1 1/2 hrs but came up empty. The only excitement for the day was a pair of Bald Eagles mating on the ice (presumed male on left side). I was a distant Buteo hovering very high over the ice but could not get my bins on it in time. I also did not see any waterfowl although the lake is mostly frozen.

The place was pretty quiet except for the flock of 25 or so English sparrows along the road paralleling the marsh (on the other side of the railroad tracks).

[Maine-birds] Midcoast Birds

While checking on MEW GULL and Iceland Gull in Owls Head a male Red-wing Blackbird was heard calling from the cattails. I eventually found him on the dock atop the traps on right side of pound. Did not find Black-headed Gull in Rockland. Yesterday at Viles Arboretum more Bohems, then Cedar and Bohems at College Carry Out. And yet more waxwings in Brunswick. Three separate flocks of 30-50 birds. I did not hear them as they flew overhead while driving so no ID. Wow I've probably seen more BOWA this winter than I've seen in all past winter's since I started being a bird paparazzi.

[Maine-birds] Bath bridge peregrine and siskins

The resident adult Peregrine was flying around the old bridge towers and we've seen our first Pine Siskin here in Richmond and at Seawall Beach (18 or so) today. No Red-winged Blackbirds. Spectacular day to be outside.

Had a male in Canaan this afternoon; only the second time I've ever had one in Feb. My earliest record ever was Feb. 27, 2002. I wonder if that was also an El Nino year. Last year my first was 3/17; average is 3/12 (compiled over a 30 year period), which has remained fairly constant for many years.

[Maine-birds] Glaucous gulls Knox Compost

At Knox Ridge Compost Facility we had 3 glaucous gulls and at least 28 bald eagles. We did not find the lesser black-backed gull. We left Rob O'Connell and his nephew to find it after we searched through hundreds of gulls for two hours. The eagles put on quite a show.

At the Irving station off exit 132 of 95 there are approximately 1000 Cedarwaxwing's along the highway offramp visible from the parking lot. No Bohemians among them though

[Maine-birds] Mount Battie, Camden, 2.28.16

On our hike up Mount Battie in Camden Hills SP this morning, we heard/saw the resident raven pair apparently reacting to a vocalizing Barred Owl. From the summit we also enjoyed watching a soaring Red-tailed Hawk overhead.

[Maine-birds] More red-winged blackbirds!

At least 5 red-winged bbirds here in Auburn this afternoon. One of the earliest they've ever been here at my house in spring.

- 800+ Greater Scaup continue, etc, Simpson's Point, Brunswick, 2/20 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk Group).

- 1 drake Northern Pintail, Eastern Road Trail, Scarborough Marsh, 2/21.

- 12 Northern Pintails (11 drakes, 1 hen), Jones Creek, Scarborough Marsh, 2/21.

- 2 Yellow-rumped Warblers, Community Park, Wells, 2/23 (with Jeannette).

- 2 male RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, feeders here at the store, 2/23. One through week's end.

~ 25 Bohemian Waxwings with 30+ Cedar Waxwings and 100+ American Robins, Viles Arboretum, Augusta, 2/25.

- 2 1st-winter Iceland Gulls, Hatch Hill Landfill, Augusta, 2/25.

- 27 Harlequin Ducks, Dyer Point to Two Lights State Park, 2/26 (with clients).

- 4 Iceland Gulls (2 ad, 1 3rd-W, 1 1st-W), Portland Harbor, 2/26.

[Maine-birds] Looking for info about Bombay Hook

Hi Folks,

I am hoping to fulfill my dream to visit Bombay Hook this year.

Can anyone who has made the pilgrimage give me an idea of the optimum time to visit for red knot migration? I have heard that mid- to late May is the general window but do you have more specific advice as to timing, or care to share any other tips and suggestions in general? Many thanks!

[Maine-birds] Red and White-winged Xbills and a fisher, not a kingfisher on the Long Falls Dam Road today

David Ladd and I spent the better part of the midday on the Long Falls Dam Road today. We came across 17+ Red Crossbills (call notes recorded not yet identified), 7+ White-winged Crossbills, 70+ siskins, and the best creature of the day - a large male Fisher ambling across the road, clearly not a kingfisher. Really big animal. Happily no road Moose. Good Xbill pics will be up on Flickr tomorrow.

Long Falls Dam Road is off rt 16 north of Anson, De Lorme map 20 and then 30.

Very nice day to in boreal country.

[Maine-birds] Iceland/Glaucous? Gull Lewiston

Hello All,

Got a poor quick look at a sub adult Iceland or Glaucous Gull from the Lown Broad St/Cedar Street bridge. It was flying past the Franco-American Center heading toward the Bates Mill and I got only a rear view and quick view of dorsal surface enough to discern it was nearly uniformly a dingy white.

Despite a Bald Eagle sending about 70 Gulls into the air while doing a river survey about 30 minutes later I could not pick out this bird again from the swirling masses.

Probably still around somewhere.

[Maine-birds] MEW GULL continues in Owls Head Hbr

I also saw the Iceland Gull. Did not see Mew Gull although I was more concentrated on the reported W. Grebe. No luck despite heavy searching.There was a possibility far out in the channel but no certainties.

[Maine-birds] MEW GULL continues in Owls Head Hbr

No luck re-locating the WESTERN GREBE in Owls Head Harbor this afternoon, but the MEW GULL continues in the left-hand lobster pound, along with a first cycle Iceland Gull that kept harassing it.

No luck either with the Snowy Owl that has been reported from the Gunning Rocks off Marshall Point, Port Clyde, but we did spot 5 Great Cormorants on one of the rocks, and a ledge covered with Harbor Seals over near what I think is Hupper Island. An adult Bald Eagle flew over, as well.
