[Maine-birds] Red-throated Loons

Today marked the end of a 5-day Road Scholar birding tour surrounding the Downeast Spring Birding Festival. Highlight of the day: a couple of Red-throated Loons at Quoddy Head State Park, obviously paired up.

And, thanks to Bruce Deuce (Junior) who continues to make it easy to find a Lubec spruce grouse. Thanks also to Ed, a spruce grouse in the Edmunds Division of Moosehorn that has been in the same spot for three of the last four years. Sure takes the pressure off.

[Maine-birds] White-faced Ibis - Falmouth, 5/31

Greg Miller and Chris Brown just stopped in the Nature Center to report the/a WHITE-FACED IBIS was in the marsh just off the south end of the West Meadow at Gilsland Farm in Falmouth (http://ebird.org/ebird/hotspot/L251783) at about 2:30pm. I ran out around 3:00 and the bird was still there, being surprisingly vocal. This bird has more white on the face than the one that was photographed at Capisic Pond on 21 May. Nice the know there are a couple around this year.

Good birding,

Hi Bruce, funny you should mention that spot. I remember the same trail into the marsh and tried to find it last week w/o luck. Parking still there but trail ended at the field. Ticks are so bad this year, I wasn't' into bushwhacking. If any else can tell me a trail into the marsh from the north end I would appreciate knowing. C

[Maine-birds] Monhegan, 5.29.16

A cooler, less birdy day after the past few days of bird abundance here on the island, but interesting birds continue, including:

Great Cormorant - Paul and others saw at least 2 on the cliff side of the island
Sora - at least one still wails away in the Meadow
Am. Woodcock - Paul and I heard 1 displaying over the Meadow last night
Black-billed Cuckoo - Mik Oyler and I thought we saw one this morning, then Mik reported one this evening in the same vicinity.
Brown Thrasher - got great looks at one of the assumed resident pairs in the Meadow with the Birds on Tap bird walk this morning. Not unusual but always a dramatic bird.
Orange-crowned Warbler - Mik and I are fairly certain we heard 1 singing (repeatedly) this morning on Wharf Hill but we couldn't get a visual
Mourning Warbler - Paul found one by the pump house, later seen by others that unfortunately did not include me.
White-crowned Sparrow - I heard a report of 1 in the community garden in the Meadow this morning
Crossbills - from reports it sounds like both Red and White-winged continue (not that they'd be expected to move along like many of the migrants apparently did)

Rain expected tomorrow and we leave at 12:30, so expectations are low from here on out, but no complaints about this wonderful weekend!

[Maine-birds] Seaside Sparrow location

A decade or more ago, Seaside Sparrow could be found (not all years) at a small wildlife refuge near the corner of Southgate and Manson Libby Rd.  Turn south onto Southgate Road off of Route 1(first intersection west of Haigis Parkway.  Follow Southgate to Manson Libby Rd.  On the right near the intersection there is a tow that one can see when walking into the marsh from the refuge I mentioned.  Turn right onto Manson Libby Rd and very soon take another right into a tiny parking lot by the refuge building.  The refuge and the building may no longer be there, as I can't see anything on Google Earth.  At any rate, there was a trail to the march from this parking lot.  The trail went through a copse of woodland, then into a field that sloped down into the marsh.  If present, Seaside Sparrows were on in the pond areas to the right as one entered the marsh, along a tidal channel.

Locals will kindly correct me if this wildlife refuge is no longer present, and/or if there is still a trail to the marsh and how that trail might be accessed.

Thanks,
BAB

[Maine-birds] Monhegan, 5.27.16 - 5.28.16

Paul and I came out to Monhegan yesterday morning, and while we missed Thursday's fallout, good numbers of birds continue on the island and good weather persists, adding up to a perfect couple of days so far.

In the past two days we've seen 21 warbler species, including a bright ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, a bit unusual for spring, first found this morning by Jeremiah Trimble and Jeff Offermann. Other warbler highlights have been several singing Tennessee, several obliging Blackburnians in apple trees--is there anything more picturesque?--Canada, Wilson's, Nashville, many Blackpolls, Cape May, N. Waterthrush, Ovenbird, and Bay-breasted. We dipped on Mourning Warbler--at least 3 were seen this morning.

Today seemed to be Empid day, with lots of little flycatchers around, and many fortunately vocalizing. We had Yellow-bellied, Alder, Willow, and Least throughout the past two days, all over.

Other highlights for us:

Sooty Shearwater - 1 seen as our boat approaching the island yesterday
Great Blue Heron - a vocal flyby this morning
Green Heron - at the Ice Pond and in the Meadow
Sora - 1 or more birds continue to call loudly from the Meadow, day and night
Black-billed Cuckoo - I heard this morning, seen by others. At least 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo was also seen by several birders, but alas, not us.
Common Nighthawk - Derek Lovitch spotted 1 roosting on a tree branch near the Yew this morning, seen throughout the day
Chimney Swift - 2
Olive-sided Flycatcher - 1, an island first for me, seen near Lobster Cove yesterday afternoon. (Thanks, Jeremiah and Jeff!)
Eastern Kingbird - not unusual, but always fun to watch them playing musical perches in the Meadow
White-eyed Vireo - from the various reports we heard this morning, I think there are several on the island, including one we heard this afternoon in the back of the Meadow
Philadelphia Vireo - we saw at least 2 individuals, maybe more
Red-eyed Vireo - great numbers, as can be typical this time of year; also a personal favorite, so I never get bored with them
House Wren
Swainson's Thrush - FOY, singing in Cathedral Woods
Brown Thrasher - several around and singing
Cedar Waxwing - a growing flock; common, I know, but my favorite bird of all, and is there anything more beautiful than a flock of waxwings in a blooming apple tree? (Other than the aforementioned Blackburnians, I mean.)
Orchard Oriole - 1 singing male yesterday
White-winged Crossbill - a small flock hanging out in the spruces near the Ice Pond. There is also a small number of RED CROSSBILLS here, which we haven't lucked on yet.
Pine Siskin - several small flocks all over.

Another miss for us has been DICKCISSEL, which several birders heard fly-over this morning.

I was also happy to twitch a new beer today: Mad Cow Milk Stout infused with bird-friendly coffee beans launched at the Monhegan Brewery this afternoon (as part of Freeport Wild Bird Supply's Birds on Tap weekend).

Happy holiday weekend!
Kristen

Re: [Maine-birds] Mourning warbler and Eastern wood Pewee in my yard

No warblers for me this year...can't get out much. Can't hear most of them them anyway. Red-eyed Vireo singing all day. Easy ID.
How do they keep it up in this heat? No glass of water around? I saw one on a nest years ago in New York State when we were doing the atlas.

[Maine-birds] Mourning Warbler in Cape Elizabeth

I had a good look at a lovely Mourning Warbler along Charles Jordan Road in Cape Eiiz this afternoon. Unfortunately, it was chased away by catbirds who seem particularly numerous and quarrelsome this year! If you want to try for it: after the second sharp  turn, go most of the way down the hill and look for a wooden gate on the left. The bird was in the white lilacs in that area.

[Maine-birds] Indigo Bunting today in Morrill

Quite a treat!   A bit after noon, a beautiful, iridescent male was feeding on seed spilled below a feeder.  He has returned several times throughout the afternoon.  A life bird for me.

[Maine-birds] Re: Prothonotary, et al Hinckley

Apologies to all who might have been awaiting word from me last evening on the location. My data plan is tapped out for the month and I wasn't anywhere near WiFi.

The location is the western edge of the upper pond toward the far corner near the swale with the alder shrubs. That is the original location of the initial sighting. It could well have chosen other surroundings of course. It was calling intermittently, that might be the best lead on it.

[Maine-birds] Dickcissel--Cape Neddick

The Dickcissel that came to our feeders yesterday is back again and seen at 9:30 am. I checked with Peter Vickery and he said there are no records of them breeding in Maine.  I know there were several winter reports and we had one here in March.  I wonder if this group decided to stay around.  You can see a pic on the Maine Birds Facebook page if you are interested.

Not found from 5 to 7pm by the throng of birders looking. Dog activity was high though so that may have kept it in hiding. Thanks all for the group effort!

[Maine-birds] Prothonotary Warbler -- YES at noon

Greetings, birding friends! The Prothonotary Warbler was present and incandescing at about noon along the west side of the upper pond at Hinckley Park in SoPo.

The bird was singing "sporadically but emphatically" — belting out a snatch of "sweet-sweet-sweet" and then falling silent. Easier to hear than to see.

If you're standing on the bridge over the spillway at the upper pond, the bird has been seen along the right side of the pond just ahead of you, about halfway around towards the inlet.

Maybe my best bird ever for Hinckley Park — woo-hoo! Many thanks to Derek and to whoever found it initially.

Peace & good birding,

[Maine-birds] Ruddy Turnstones and Laughing Gulls on Flat Bay

Yesterday morning at low tide we observed 3 Ruddy Turnstones with a flock of Black-bellied Plovers feeding on the mudflats of Flat Bay.  We wonder if these birds are the same ones we saw on the Pleasant River mud banks last Friday.

Also, the raucous cries of Laughing Gulls attracted our attention this morning - this is the earliest they have arrived at Flat Bay in the 4 years we have observed the bay in the spring.

Hi all,
Just received a text about a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER found this am at Hinckley Park in South Portland. It was singing along the west bank of the upper pond, and as of 8:45, it was still singing, slowly moving south along pond toward alder swale near powerline cut.

Can anyone tell me who this little guy/gal is with a grenish head? The ony warblers I can think of with greeish head are Chestnut-sided and Black-throted Green. My guess is the Black-throated Green, even though it lacks the black throat and typicl facial features. Taken on Mohegan Island May 23, 2016. It only stuck around long enough for one picture.

[Maine-birds] No sign of Ancient Murrelet at Petit Manan on 5/24

Hello Maine Birders:

I was out on The Islander with Acadian Nature Cruises out of Bar Harbor yesterday. We went to Petit Manan Island midday and I had Ancient Murrelet on my mind but I did not pick one out. It was a bit foggy and we were in a boat so we may have missed it but I didn't see it. Force of will was not sufficient.

There was a subadult Peregrine Falcon out there and we watched it pluck an unidentified lifeless Alcid off the water. Atlantic Puffin was my best guess but...

Good birding,
Eric

[Maine-birds] ID help for a warbler on Monhen

I guess it could fit for a 1st year female Bay-breasted Warbler too, but the thing streaking on the breast seems more Blackpolly to me.

Looks like a Blackpoll to me. Somewhat odd coloration for this time of year, but that'd be my guess.

RE: [Maine-birds] ID help for a warbler on Monhen

Tennessee warbler?  Looks possibly a little vireo-ish alternatively.

Thank you,

Re: [Maine-birds] Ancient Murrelet - Petit Manan

Jill Tengeres found the/a Ancient Murrelet at Petit Manan Island on 22 May 2016. She reported that it continued around the island until early afternoon but was not found during their 5pm survey. Still no sign as of this morning but with more eyes looking it will hopefully turn up again.

Here is a link to a couple photos from Jill: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S29831694

Good birding,

Very little details to share here and I don't even know the exact date but, I talked with John Drury today and he got a secondhand report that some folks on Petit Manan Island saw presumably the same Ancient Murrelet just the other day. When I know more I will share it with you all...

All the best,

Apparently about a doz people were here this morning, 4 others here when I arrived at 12:50, and no one had seen it. We have tried from parking area, the channel by the road , out to the viewing platform and a couple people have walked into the marsh some. No luck anywhere obvious today.

Good luck!
