[Maine-birds] Monhegan update, 10.31.17

The talk-of-the-town out here today was a Great Egret that spent some time in the Meadow early this morning and ended up in the Ice Pond for a while in late morning. I saw it trying to buck a headwind over the harbor, then caught up with it at the Ice Pond, where I also found an island first for me: a lone American Coot.

Caught up with one of the three YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS, huddled out of the wind at Swim Beach this afternoon. For warblers, I think we're up to 9 species total overall: Yellow-rumped wins, with dozens, then probably Common Yellowthroat (5-6), Northern Parula (4-6), Palm (2-3), YELLOW-THROATED (presumed 3, unless the other 2 met their demise since yesterday), and singles of Nashville, ORANGE-CROWNED, and Pine. (Had a single Black-throated Green on 10/28-29.)

Strong winds continued today. But some quiet, sunny patches today were quite birdy, including dozens of Yellow-rumps, Golden-crowned Kinglets (with a few Ruby-crowned in the mix), a handful of Chipping Sparrows with 1-2 Field Sparrows, small flocks of juncos, and Indigo Buntings popping up all over. (Had 1 White-throated Sp on 10/28 and 1 Savannah yesterday.) Also, continuing single Red-eyed and Blue-headed Vireos (presuming they're the same b/c they've been hanging out in the same area for at least 4 days). And, added a Winter Wren to the Carolina and House Wrens seen in the previous 3 days.

For raptors, just a Merlin and a Sharp-shinned Hawk today.

We were a bit surprised to see a lingering Common Grackle, as well.

It's been quite an adventure.

[Maine-birds] Harlequins at Cliff House, Coot at Phillips Pond, No Migrants at Nubble Thickets, York Co., 10/31

Hearing about the nice southern migrants at Monhegan, I thought I might hit the Nubble Thickets to see what migrants might be there too.  The last time I was there in late fall after strong southerly winds (10/4/11) I was lucky enough to add Hooded Warbler and White-eyed Vireo to my Maine list.  But no such luck this time.  After 90 minutes of spishing this morning I had exactly 1 migrant - a flyover Yellow-rump.  Notably, there was a bit less habitat and a few more houses than 6 years ago.

Next I was spent some time looking for Cave Swallows on the coast.  (There have been several on the CT coast this week.)  No luck.  But there was some good Cave Swallow habitat at the Cliff House - the balconies of the ocean facing rooms were warmed by the sun, sheltered from the wind, and had lots of small flies.

Consolation prize at the Cliff House were 2 male Harlequins in a large flock of Eiders and (mostly Black) Scoters beneath the northern most building.  And a Coot mixed in with the dabblers at Phillips Pond was a nice find.

[Maine-birds] Monhegan update, 10.30.17

Post-storm, the three YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS were all accounted for. Two were right below our room this morning. One of them spent most of the day feeding in the gardens by the church, which were "put to bed" yesterday and mulched with seaweed. It was joined there for most of the afternoon by the continuing Eastern Bluebird, a Northern Parula, a Pine Warbler, and a Palm Warbler.

Also noted a couple of late Field Sparrows, at least one Clay-colored Sparrow, several Swamp Sparrows.

Two Peregrine Falcons were zipping overhead together this afternoon, both dark, juvenile-looking birds. One of them dove on a low-flying cormorant at one point, driving it into the water, and then harassed several gulls on the water and over on Manana. Presumably just because it could.

In the woods over by White Head, a Hermit Thrush was tucked out of the wind. Still very windy out here, most birds seemed hunkered down today.

[Maine-birds] Day 2 at Katahdin Woods and Waters

Hi all -- My wife and I spent a few hours in the northern section of KWW this morning before we headed for home. We entered KWW near the Grand Lake Matagamon entrance, drove ~4 miles to the end of the road, and then walked the woods road / trail south.

It was not super active, but we enjoyed seeing 4 Ruffed Grouse, about 16 Purple Finches busily eating birch catkins, and my FOF American Tree Sparrows (4).

It's a gem up there.

[Maine-birds] YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS, Monhegan, update: Make that 3

Re-located this morning what I presumed was one of the YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS of the two birds I found yesterday on the Monhegan breakwater. It was hanging out with a parula, some chickadees, and a single Eastern Bluebird behind the parsonage, then flew north. A little later at Swim Beach I observed a single Yellow-throated Warbler feeding in the wrack and fly-catching from the rocks. As it was posing nicely my for photographs, I saw two birds fly across the beach from the north and land on the eaves of the Red House: both also Yellow-throated Warblers! So my joke yesterday about there maybe being three wasn't a joke after all. Eventually all three birds were relatively near each other on the beach. Before they flew off, I tried really hard to get them together in one photo, or even a video b/c they were moving so much, but only succeeded with two at a time.

[Maine-birds] Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument today

Hi all -- My wife and I got ourselves to KWW NM today and drove the loop road just west of Whetstone Falls on the East Branch of the Penobscot. A lovely day. Colors are past and leaves are mostly fallen, but the views both near and far were lovely.

My highlights:
  • Black-backed Woodpecker (at least 1, maybe 2) at Lynx Pond
  • A flock of migratory American Crows. 52 birds in a loose flock, well overhead and flying south, with a huge and majestic Katahdin in the background.
  • My first Pine Siskins in a long while
Cheers all,

Craig

[Maine-birds] YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS, etc., Monhegan, 10.28.17

Paul and I are out on Monhegan for a few days and knowing bad weather is on the way later tomorrow, I tried to make the most of my time outside today. The birding highlight was definitely two YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS flycatching in proximity on the breakwater. (There was a third warbler-type bird with them of similar size that flew off, so who knows, maybe there are three out here?) While I wasn't able to get a photo of the two birds together, I did manage to get shots of each bird; one bird clearly has darker, heavier side streaking than the other.

Also turned up an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER behind the Trailing Yew.

Other highlights:

No. Gannet - 1st year bird on the water on the way out here
Merlin - 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker - 1
Red-eyed Vireo - 1
Blue-headed Vireo - 1
House Wren - 1 near garden
Golden-crowned Kinglet - many
Nashville Warbler - 1 in garden
No. Parula - several
Yellow-rumps - several
Black-throated Green Warbler - 1
"Yellow" Palm Warbler - 3
C. Yellowthroat - 4-5
Indigo Bunting - 3 in with a small flock of Chipping Sparrows
Dickcissel - 1 in garden
Baltimore Oriole - 2-3 in the grape vines near Tribler

Who knows what the storm will bring?

[Maine-birds] Fryeburg Harbor after the rain

The sod fields in Fryeburg Harbor can be a productive place for birding after three days of rain, and so it proved this morning. Bob Crowley and I were out on Old River Road and saw several different species of shorebirds - 1 Golden Plover, 3 Black-bellied Plovers, 7 Pectoral sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs, and a single Dunlin. The fields were covered in Pipits, 95 by my count, easy to see in the short grass.

There was also a Bonaparte's Gull on nearby McNeil Road and 230 Canada geese on Rt 113. There were no non-Canada geese, and surprisingly no ducks of any sort.

[Maine-birds] White-eyed Vireo - Mackworth Island

I came across a White-eyed Vireo out on Mackworth Island this morning along the edge of the main field. The bird was fairly active and moved back into the woods away from the field during the 10 minutes I was able to view it. Approximate GPS coordinates are here; 43.690737, -70.232519

There was also a late Red-eyed Vireo and a late Blue-gray Gnatcatcher along the field as well.

More details and photos can be seen in my eBird checklist;

Re: [Maine-birds] Hancock: Cattle Egrets...

Hi all - Josh is right, the road I used is actually Eagle Point Road and it is a public residential road. I found one CAEG within 1/4 mile of Mud Creek Road and turned around. Lazy of me (though I was in a hurry), since I didn't know there were 3!

Best, and thanks for the share.

[Maine-birds] York County pelagic report (10/21)...

Hi all,

On Saturday (10/21), Doug Hitchcox and I spent the day offshore on the
F/V Nor'easter out of Kennebunk with Capt. Mike Perkins. (FYI: This
was the boat's final fishing trip of 2017). Seas were calm and winds
were light to start, increasing a bit in the afternoon, and visibility
was excellent. The fishing was tough, but we tallied an interesting
list of offshore birds and enjoyed 9 hours of sun out at sea.

Doug kept 16 eBird checklists (!) for the trip (roughly one every half
hour), so I don't have a single composite list to share, but here are
some highlights, with links to select checklists with photos, in order
of appearance:

...1 COMMON MURRE
...1 RAZORBILL
...1 SHORT-EARED OWL (!)
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S40065120
...1 ATLANTIC PUFFIN (seen by Doug's camera)
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S40063359
...1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS
...1 POMARINE JAEGER (also seen by Doug's camera)
...1 MERLIN
...1 CEDAR WAXWING
...1 DARK-EYED JUNCO
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S40065116

Expected seabirds included...

...10+ NORTHERN FULMAR
...10+ CORY'S SHEARWATER
...75+ GREAT SHEARWATER
https://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S40065106
...1 SOOTY SHEARWATER
https://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S40065100
...200+ NORTHERN GANNET
along with a few flocks of migrating ducks, cormorants, geese, and
small numbers of Red-throated and Common Loons.

And, we saw multiples each of Minke, Fin, and Humpback Whales, though
many sightings were distant. Nearly all of the whale sightings were
while we were on the fishing grounds ~25 miles offshore at the north
end of Jeffreys Ledge.

Best,
Josh

Yellow-rumped Warblers are no longer flitting around our front yard trees and big flocks of Dark-eyed Juncos rise from the roadsides when we drive by.  There is a bumper crop of elderberry, mountain ash and chokecherry so lots of American Robins are lingering.

Three pairs of of Hooded Mergansers rode in with the tide in Greenland Cove this morning - a welcome sight. Yesterday at Pemaquid Point, four agitated Golden-crowned kinglets with crowns flashing in the sunlight - with a small flock of chickadees, a large flock of eiders with one White-winged Scoter and a few Black Guillemots.
