[Maine-birds] Acadia Snowies

I hiked the South Ridge Trail of Acadia National Park’s Cadillac Mountain this morning and flushed a Snowy Owl. From the summit, I set up my spotting scope to look across to the summit of Sargent Mountain and saw one seeming to pounce on a possible prey item—the owl was tiny in the scope but unmistakably a Snowy. These were my first of the season (but not, as my 10-year-old daughter reminded me, my first of the year: those were way back in January).

[Maine-birds] Maine Christmas Bird Count Dates

Hi everyone:

With the beginning of the 118th Christmas Bird Count just a couple weeks away, I wanted to share this year's list of Maine counts:

There are still a few counts that I haven't heard dates from coordinators yet but I will update this list as those dates become known or if any rescheduled snow days are needed.

Nice to see Maine pulling in high counts for: Red-necked Grebe (271 at Bath-Phippsburg-Georgetown), Purple Sandpiper (451 at Biddeford-Kennebunkport), Thick-billed Murre (2 at Schoodic Point), Black Guillemot (82 at Eastport), and Dickcissel tied with four other state (1 at Biddeford-Kennebunkport).

[Maine-birds] Rockport: Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

I heard a "mew" while filling my feeders, looked up and there it was. Wing stripe was obvious. Second visit this week.

[Maine-birds] Grand Lake Stream CBC!

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to let everyone know of this year's Grand Lake Stream Christmas Bird Count, hosted by Downeast Lakes Land Trust. This year's count is Friday, December 15th. We are currently seeking birders to participate in our count circle, and we will provide a pizza lunch for all counters. Grand Lake Stream has some incredible habitat, sometimes with a wide variety of birds. This is the second year of this count circle, and we would love to have a huge turnout. Please contact me at cbrown@downeastlakes.org to register for the day. We will meet at 8 am, and count until 4 pm. Hope to see you there!

[Maine-birds] Goldeneyes in Hancock

Hi All,

I had 102 common goldeneyes in Kilkenny Cove (Skillings River) today. They arrived yesterday with the cold weather. One possible Barrow's Goldeneye.

[Maine-birds] Unity Pond birds

What a difference a day makes. Numbers of birds greatly increased at the site, primarily along Kanokolus Rd. Good numbers of blackbirds included 20+ Rusties (first of fall for me). Waterbirds included small flocks of loons, Red-necked and Pied-billed grebes, a few scoters, a Long-tailed Duck and good numbers of Common Goldeneyes.

We are still very much in need of help for our Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 16, if you are free.

A highly animated and rowdy flock 16-20 Bluebirds together with American Goldfinches were bickering at the culvert next to the house and the winterberry! A seeming bemused Red-bellied woodpecker watched in-between pecking the branch! A joy, indeed.

[Maine-birds] Sanford Lagoons Access Violation

Following a short birding visit to Sanford Lagoons this morning, facility management informed me of a problem they had this weekend…

A 'birder' entered the facility while it was closed (outside of the public access hours). He did so by climbing the six foot fence next to the closed/locked gate. When approached, the individual tried to justify his access because there aren't any "NO TRESPASSING" signs posted on the fence. Needless to say the manager was not happy. And although he wants birders to continue to enjoy this great birding hotspot, this behavior cannot continue.

The Sanford Lagoons/Sanford WWTP personnel have been extremely accommodating to birders. It is a great place to visit and it frequently hosts rarities, such as this weekend's Yellow-throated Warbler.

I realize I am providing this info to the vast majority of birders that respect the property and rules of others while birding. However, please help me spread the word to anyone you know that may be visiting the Sanford Lagoons; and when you go please use common birding sense and etiquette. Help us keep this great birding hotspot open to birders.

Sanford Lagoons hours:

Saturday and Sunday - 7 AM to 8:30 AM

Weekdays - 6 AM to 4:30 PM

No public access is allowed outside of these hours and, regardless of hours, access is not allowed if the entrance gates are closed/locked.

For 'new' visitors:

Sign liability waiver on the clipboard just inside the main office glass doors on the right. (This is a one time signature only.)

Park in designated visitor parking.

Absolutely no vehicles are allowed within the inner fence (around the ponds).

[Maine-birds] No warbler at Sanford Lagoons

A few of us searched in vain for the yellow-throated warbler from 7:30 to at least 10.

[Maine-birds] Yellow-throated Warbler

The Yellow-throated Warbler was still present this morning at Sanford Lagoons but did not make an appearance for us until around 7:45am. The bird was very active over the course of the 45 minutes we were able to observe it and it spent most of its time around the Admin building. It did seem to favor a few of the small planted evergreens surrounding the Admin building and was difficult to see at times when in those trees. As a reminder, the gates will be closed the remainder of the day but will reopen tomorrow morning at 6am.

On a side note, I spent an hour this morning at Southpoint Sanctuary trying to locate the remaining Hooded Warbler but did not have any luck. There was however a noisy Catbird present along with a few Yellow-rumps.

A Clay Colored Sparrow was seen this morning at Kettle Cove, Cape Elizabeth. It was near the sign that says Commercial Fisherman Parking. at the entrance to the general parking area.

[Maine-birds] Western Grebe

Yesterday afternoon at Sears Island causeway I had a single Western Grebe about 150 feet north of the causeway, closer to the mainland than the island. Also had Long-tailed ducks (maybe 15-20), Bufflehead, and a pair of Greater Scaup.

[Maine-birds] Shorebirds at Flat Bay, Harrington

Four months and counting of shorebirds on the Flat Bay mudflats!

Lately we've been viewing flocks of Black-bellied Plover mixed with Dunlin and peeps (the birds are on the other side of the bay - we can ID the plover and Dunlin, but not the peeps at that distance). Yesterday there were 180+ birds and today 150+ birds. The yellowlegs left about two weeks ago.

Common Goldeneyes showed up yesterday so the gang is all here for the winter. Besides the goldeneye we see Black and Long-tailed Ducks, Bufflehead, Common Eiders, Common Loons and Red-throated Loons. Big flocks of Bonaparte's Gulls are hanging around.

[Maine-birds] Cape Elizabeth spots today

Jeff Webb and I birded a few locations in Cape Elizabeth early this afternoon. At Two Lights we saw 2 Harlequin Ducks and 1 Northern Gannet. A visit to the Lobster Shack yielded 12 more Harlequins.

At Kettle Cove there was 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR feeding in the parking lot median strip.

We had a brief glimpse of the WHITE-EYED VIREO flying into some brush near the picnic tables at Crescent Beach, confirmed by 2 other birders there who had just seen it. (I actually saw this bird on Thursday afternoon flying into a tangle closer to the shore. At the time I thought it was a Yellow-rumped Warbler because it made a "check" call... but the brightly contrasting wing bars, the way it flew low and concealed itself, and the coloration pattern on the body had me wondering a little, until I saw Bill's post).

There were also 2 American Tree Sparrow along the edge of the parking lot at Crescent.

[Maine-birds] Sanford: YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER (Nov 25)...

Hi all,

The YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER observed by Paul and Maureen Wolter
yesterday (and reported here by Derek Lovitch) was seen this morning
by myself and six other birders at the Sanford Lagoons.

This location is only open from 7-8:30am on weekends, so the next
chance to view this bird is tomorrow (Sunday) at 7am. We watched the
bird foraging around the buildings and trees adjacent to the visitor
parking area.

[Maine-birds] Additional Highlights This Week, 11/18-24

Hi all,

A few other observations of note over the past seven days included:

- 1 DICKCISSEL continues daily at the store through week's end.

- Unseasonable numbers of Black-bellied Plovers continue around Casco Bay, along with better than average numbers of Dunlin.

- Red-throated Loons remain unusually abundant in and around Casco Bay.

- 1 AMERICAN COOT, Grondin Pond, Scarborough, 11/20 (with Jeannette).

- 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet and 4 Carolina Wrens, Village Crossings, Cape Elizabeth, 11/20 (with Jeannette).

- 1 GRAY CATBIRD, 1 American Pipit, 2 Northern Flickers, etc, Bailey Island, Harpswell, 11/24.

My high count this week of 582 Canada Geese in the Greater Yarmouth Goose Fields was on 11/22, a slight increase from the previous few weeks.

Been there for almost a week, great views today, working the brushy picnic table area at the end of the beach parking lot (which is open), also moves down the wood trail between the beach and the pond!

[Maine-birds] Rufous Hummer??

My son while sitting in his deer stand this morning texted me about a copper colorist hummingbird- He also said it seemed a larger hummingbird than he ever seen before- told him that late Fall Rufous Hummingbirds sometimes are seen in Maine- no real ID but a possibility of a Rufous- I be Thankful of seeing another Rufous in Maine-Cheers

[Maine-birds] SUMMER TANAGER, Lincolnville, 11.22.17

A birder friend on Steel Road in Lincolnville had a SUMMER TANAGER pass through his yard this morning. He doesn't have feeders up, so it didn't linger.

Yet one more reminder to keep getting out there and looking during November rarity season!

[Maine-birds] York through Wells, 11/21 (OCWA, etc)

Hi all,

Jeannette and I spent most of the day today birding from Long Sands Beach in York through Wells Harbor, concentrating on thickets.

Best bird was the ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER on Juniper Road at Long Sands Beach. Otherwise, it was just a smattering of the usual "lingering" stuff, including scattered Yellow-rumpled Warblers (high of 16 at Community Park in Wells), 3 Double-crested Cormorants, 2 Hermit Thrushes, 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 2 Northern Flickers, 1 Savannah Sparrow (Bourne Ave, Moody Marsh), 1 Greater Yellowlegs (Harbor Road, Wells), and 22 Dunlin (Wells Harbor).

Other, seasonable highlights, included Harlequin Ducks (high of 21 along Marginal Way in Ogunquit), Purple Sandpipers (50+, Marginal Way), 10 Snow Buntings (Community Park, Wells), scattered Great Cormorants, and a growing number of all of the expected sea ducks.

[Maine-birds] Hooded Warbler photo

If anyone is online now (10 AM – 11/21) and has a good photo of one of the Biddeford Hooded Warblers that they would be willing to share for us to use to illustrate our column this week for Boothbay Register, we would be grateful and of course would credit you as the photographer. Sadly we would need it before 10:15 AM so we understand if no one out there is able to help us out!

[Maine-birds] Biddeford : Warblers + Owl

Snow flurries while on my way this morning. Sunny, windy and cold at the Pool. Both male Hooded Warblers were still present at Southpoint Sanctuary.The
Adult was much less cooperative. We also had fleeting looks at the Audubons Yellow-rumped.

A very white Snowy Owl was down in "meadow" at East Point late morning. Before I left I watched it fly over toward Wood Island.

[Maine-birds] Hooded Warbler YES

This morning, seen repeatedly at close range (10-30') from approx 10-10:30 with Turk Duddy, John Tobin, and Steve Moore. Always hopping on the ground or very low in scrub. Southpoint Sanctuary off 7th Street in Biddeford. Walk in 100' to the sign. Turn right and walk down 100'. Was windy and COLD, bird is surprisingly hard to pick out against the leaf litter and fall colors, especially with everything moving in the wind.

[Maine-birds] Biddeford HOWA - Yes

Both immature and mature male continue as of 3:45pm at Southpoint Sanctuary.

I misspoke about the taxonomy question on YRWA. There was a proposal before the AOU to split the YRWA into three species. The proposal was voted down based on a study that examined a zone of interbreeding between Audubons and Myrtle in western Canada. Thanks to Josh Fecteau and Bill Hancock and, via his excellent blog, Herb Wilson for the feedback.

[Maine-birds] SNOW, HOWA, AUWA - Biddeford Pool, 11/18

I had the pleasure of leading a quick van trip to Biddeford Pool this morning and wanted to get the word out about a few lingering rarities that anyone out birding this weekend may want to know about:

SNOWY OWL (SNOW) - single bird sitting among the lobster traps on Beach Island, viewed from Ocean Ave.
Ruddy Turnstone - roosting by a Great Cormorant on Beach Island; also ~200 Purple Sandpipers flushed off the east side of the island
HOODED WARBLER (HOWA) - the young male was very cooperative at South Point Sanctuary, off 7th St, and the adult male was reportedly seen earlier in the morning.
apparent "AUDUBON'S" YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER (AUWA) - seems to be continuing at South Point Sanctuary since the 13th; we had brief views of this yellow-throated individual by the Hooded Warbler (right of the kiosk) but the Yellow-rumps seemed to be doing more foraging around the edge of Great Pond.
Gray Catbird - getting late for this species; very vocal at South Point Sanctuary

Hahahahahahaha...I ALWAYS listen when the "Woodpecker Whisperer" speaks.

I took an uncle up there this past Wednesday. We worked the roads off to the west of the Telos Rd, starting right at the north en of Harrington Lake.,,,never went above the gate. ! was wondering about trees across the roads but all had been cleared. Also noted the large finch numbers. My uncle saw his first Crossbills, Gray Jays and our single Spruce Grouse. We saw 27 Ruffed Grouse for the day. Going back up on Monday. If your road into Mud Pond is off the Guy Allen/Longely Stream Rd, I think I know it. Lots of Tamarack.

Woodpeckers were prone to drumming as the sun crested the horizon, which was helpful. Saw thee BBWOs, but only heard one 3-toed on the Harvester Road and didn't bother to chase it down.

Roads were good, with a crust of snow and ice. But bring a spare. I spent dusk on Sunday night, helping a guy from Pennsylvania change a completely shredded tire on his Ford F-150.

[Maine-birds] Western Tanager (WETA) yes as of ~6:40am Pond Cove

The WETA found yesterday by Brendan McKay continues in the same area that straddles the edge of the preserve and the first house with the feeders. It does move around. I first located it this morning in the crown of one of the large oaks farther back from the first line of houses. It flew to one of the trees above the feeders, then into the tall tree with bittersweet vines, surveyed the scene then disappeared.

I checked the other side of Shore Road on my way back to the car but no sign of it there. EBird list to post later.

[Maine-birds] Additional Highlights This Week and Dickcissel Update, 11/11-11/17

Hi all,

Just a few more of my observations of note over the past seven productive days included:

- 1 male DICKCISSEL continues daily at the store through week's end, and throughout the day today, 11/17. The dull immature female-type was last seen on 11/10.

~30 Snow Buntings with ~100 Horned Larks, Mayall Road, Gray/New Gloucester, 11/11 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk group).

- 8 Snow Buntings and 8 Common Grackles, Yarmouth Town Landing, 11/11 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk group).

- 1 American Pipit with 16 Horned Larks and 1 Snow Bunting, Stover's Point Preserve, Harpswell, 11/13 (with Jeannette).

- 1 Gray Catbird, Eastern Promenade, Portland, 11/16.

My high count of Canada Geese in the "Greater Yarmouth Goose Fields" this week was down to only 367 on 11/17. One AMERICAN COOT was again reported from Woodville Road on 11/13.
