We saw five separate birds in the Jet Port area within 15 minutes..Airport personnel says there are six. Don't park on the road beside the airport, find a parking lot and walk.Want to stay on good terms and follow the rules!

Off of Aviatation Blvd is a parking and viewing area, found here. It is a convenient place to park and view the area. While it doesn't allow you to see the entire Jetport, it does give you a good view of about half of it. This is where I usually go to see the Snowy Owls and am usually successful here. You can often find Snow Buntings here as well.

To all coming down to the Jetport to see the Snowy Owls, please be aware of the impact we have as birders. I ran across this article last night and it looks like the Jetport has its concerns. Please make sure you obey all posted signs and use good common sense when looking for these birds. We obviously do not want to jeopardize the birds or jetport operations in the process.

[Maine-birds] Re: Snowy Owls (2), South Portland (Jetport)

Brought my mother over just before 4PM to see the Snowy Owl and found 4 in total. One was still at the Mac Jets building rotating between its apparent home base of the snow mount just in front of the MAC Jets building on Aviation Blvd., and several of the telephone poles in the area. Figuring at least one more was around, we scanned the field and found a second in the distance at the junction of runways 29 and 36. There was a lot of buzz with birders and non-birders alike while there. Was happy to see many new faces, many with their children stopping in to catch a glimpse of the visitor from the north. Lots of people asking questions and everyone was courteous as they excitedly shared their observations. Hopefully we will see some of these kids and their parents out on the trails/parks/coasts in the future! After leaving this spot, we ventured down to the end of Aviation Blvd. where there may have been another bird but it was just too far to tell with my optics. Giving up we headed out down Jetport Plaza Road and saw 2 more on light structures along the perimeter road inside the airport fence. I wasn't sure if I might have missed the first of these two relocating while scanning further so we doubled back between them to confirm it really was a 4 owl day. Drove around Jetport Blvd. and found a Red-Tailed Hawk in the swampy area at the corner near the Hilton Garden Inn.

I can easily see why people have been creating images of this bird for at least the last 17000 years. It truly is inspiring...

[Maine-birds] Snowy Owls still at Jetport; Falcons, Accipiters, Dovekie, etc

Freeport -> Cape Elizabeth (with a quick loop up to the airport) and back again ... Lots of crows out today. I passed over a dozen groupings of 4-10 birds along 295 southbound. Four redtail hawks (adults near exits 22, 15, and 5; and an immature about a mile s of the adult at 15).

At least two snowy owls are still hanging around the Portland Jetport and nearby Correctional Facility (one on the fence) - had some nice sightings a bit after noon today. While looking for the snowy there was a flying peregrine way to the south and a large buteo with some gulls (thinking redtail, didn't have the gestalt of baldie, and it might have been the redtail from exit 5). Looking at the map, there's an argument for this being one of the peregrines I sighted half an hour later at Casco Bay Bridge.

Adult peregrine on one of the transmission towers at the Casco Bay Bridge; adult-or-immature peregrine on another one of the towers. The pullouts along Waterman Drive and Thomas Knight Park gave great views.

As other notes posted here, the Dovekie at Cape Elizabeth was seen off and on for several hours ("There he is! Oooops he went under again"), be patient and keep scanning and you'll luck out and happen to be looking at the point where it pops up for air for a whole 2 seconds. A group of Harlequins wandered back and forth close to shore giving some great view acting as reference landmarks for the dovekie ("It just came up to the left of the harlequins about 15 feet closer than the long-tailed duck oh it just went down again"), An Atlantic Puffin floated through, dove a few times, and had a bunch of us thinking for a while that it was the dovekie until folks calmed down and started thinking clearly.

I'm still rusty at non-raptors, but other people identified razorbill, great cormorant, rednecked grebe, "probably a murre" and "one of the loons". Plus all of the other usual suspects re: waterbirds.

Driving around Cape Elizabeth/Kettle Point yielded a few more raptor finds - adult bald eagle, a merlin, adult sharp-shinned hawk, 2x Cooper's hawks (1 adult, 1 immature).

Still present at Dyer Point, Cape Elizabeth at 4:30 PM. No longer feeding, but just loafing approx 30-40 feet offshore. Got great looks and a very poor digiscoped photo.

One of the two drake Ring-neck Ducks continues in the Presumpscot River, a little ways above the falls. [Maine-birds] Dovekie and Puffin

The dovekie was still being seen at 330 at Dyer Point. Feeding very actively about 20 feet from shore, on the surface very briefly between dives. Also seen close in and for extended periods, an Atlantic Puffin in its winter garb. Much larger than dovekie, prominent blackish beak, remained on surface mostly.

Seen directly in front of the Lobster Shack pucnic area at 0910 this morning. Was diving (frustratingly) frequently and only giving 2-5 second looks. But, it was only 60-100' offshore, feeding along the edges of the obvious rip current right there at the shore.

Also saw a red-necked grebe near the point, just inside the cove. King eider still alluding me. All the other usual suspects in low to moderate numbers.

As of 0750 this morning one bird could be seen from Lydia Lane. It was across the runway, on the ground near where the FedEx planes are parked.

Second bird was sitting on the curved fencing of the youth correctional facility right at it's entrance off of Westbrook Street.

A snowy owl was hanging out behind the Mile Beach dunes today, seen from the unplowed access road to the southern parking lot.

Linda Woodard & I led the Maine Audubon Wings of Winter trip today.

Highlights included 3 Iceland Gulls, 2 Glaucous Gulls, a female Wood Duck & 2 Peregrine Falcons.

[Maine-birds] Lot of Common loons

From Bass Harbor to Southwest Harbor the common loons were plentiful and wrecking havoc upon the crab population. Plus lots of other sea bird activity....lots of fun.

Hey All, after returning home last night on a midnight flight, I opted to do a quick scan of the jetport area for the snowy owls reported earlier. I was able to locate one on the tall tower off jetport plaza road, just in from fire gate 4. It was actively scanning from its perch so I did not stay but for a few minutes. I believe it was benefiting from the glow of the tower while scanning as I have found them at this location with some frequency. Apologies for the late report but I was not sure how many would be reading email at 1AM and figured by sunrise it would have relocated somewhere else at the jetport for the day. Good to check the area though!

[Maine-birds] Pine Siskin & N. Pintail

Northern Pintail (m) mixed in with my mallards again today. Also a Pine Siskin mixed in with the A. Goldfinches. Don't know where all the finches came from today (150+) as the flock was double the usual size (75).

[Maine-birds] Snowy Owls (3) - South Portland, 1/25

Hi Maine-birders:

Gilsland Farm's trails are pretty icy so we decided to go looking for Snowy Owls during the bird walk this morning. There were two visible at the southeast end of the Portland International Jetport, viewed from Lydia Ln, an extension of Brickhill Ave. The most surprising was the first bird we saw, perched on a light post along I-295 directly across from Exit 4 (on the southbound side). You should obviously be responsible driving and watch the road but anyone driving on 295 south of Portland might want to peak at lamp posts.

[Maine-birds] Bluebirds are back

At my feeders in Scarborough the last 3 days. They're coming to suet as well as to my sunflower hearts .

Also have a pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers continuing to come to the suet feeder , mostly.

[Maine-birds] Titmouse in Hancock

The ice in the tidal cove has melted and the buffleheads returned. FOY Titmouse at feeder. It was good hear a new bird calling. This is fairly rare at our house. Maybe a cardinal next? Bald Eagle seen carrying sticks to nest site. I am hoping a great spring.

[Maine-birds] Whole lotta juncos! and no Snowy Owls...

We counted 34 Dark-eyed Juncos under our feeder station this morning with nearly 50 American Goldfinches. This seems to be the year of the junco - at least in this part of Downeast.

Also, we checked out Schoodic Island in Acadia this morning for Snowy Owls. No luck there but we did see the Rough-legged Hawk that's been hanging around for several weeks.

[Maine-birds] 3 Snowy Owls in Schoodic

My spouse and I birded the Schoodic loop this afternoon. We identified three snowy owls on Schoodic Island. Two were quite active jockeying for territory on the north end of the island. I attached a couple of confirmation photos.

A few ducks noticed the flyby.

[Maine-birds] South Portland/Cape Elizabeth sightings

This afternoon at Hannaford Mill Creek in South Portland there was 1 Iceland Gull among the many common gulls & ducks.

The several birders who were already at Dyer Point said there had been no report of the King Eider today. However there were many other ducks: Harlequins (30+), Black and Surf Scoters, Common Goldeneye, Long-tailed, Red-breasted Mergansers and Common Eiders. 2 Great Cormorants flew by and 1 Black Guillemot was also seen.

[Maine-birds] Odd Raptor Behavior

While birding at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunk, I observed Cooper's Hawk sitting on one of those railings for stairs that lead to the beach. As I

looked at it with my bins, it hopped down on to the rocks and then hopped under the stairs. I could see it in there while looking through the steps at a

distance of about fifty feet. After about five minutes, it came out and hopped back up to the top of the rocks. Then it went down into the spaces

between the rocks and emerged from between some large rocks by the sand. This continued for quite a while. It would go down into the rocks and

then pop out a few feet further down the row of rocks.

Has anyone observed this? Was it hunting for rodents? Ideas?

Also saw many seals fishing about 100 feet off the beach.

The King is back and posing for great looks in a raft of about 40 COEIs. Noon at Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth. The 3 Brant from Kettle Cove also flew over and are about 100 yards out from the eiders

[Maine-birds] Carolina wren

at about 1 pm today we had a Carolina wren on our suet feeder in Hallowell. It then spent time in a brush pile and our wood pile pecking at the hunk of suet it hacked off.
Beautiful bird. Is this a "good" winter for them in Maine?

[Maine-birds] Monhegan, 1.16-1.17.18

An overnight on Monhegan yielded 32 species, although I dipped on (missed) several species being seen out there thus far this winter, including Snow Bunting and Carolina Wren.

Highlights included:

Red-breasted Merganser - 1 (new island species for me)

Red-necked Grebe - 1 off White Head

No. Gannet - 1

Great Cormorant - 1

Red-bellied Woodpecker - 1 female (continuing?) near Tribler

Hermit Thrush - 2 near White Head

American Robin - 8 together

Cedar Waxwing - small flock

Golden-crowned Kinglet - many (25)

Dark-eyed Junco - very many (50+)

White-throated Sparrow - many (25)

Song Sparrow - 2
