[Maine-birds] Isles of Shoals birding trips with Shoals Marine Lab
Steve Mirick
Bradford, NH
Greetings all,
NH Audubon and the Shoals Marine Lab are once again partnering to offer
overnight birding trips on Appledore Island this fall. This year there
are to of them: August 31-Sept 2 and Sept 2-5. Trips include an
opportunity to visit the Appledore Island Banding Station, and in past
years have turned up a variety of interesting birds. More info is
available at
https://www.shoalsmarinelaboratory.org/nh-audubon-isles-shoals-birding-trip.
This trip has usually filled up and had a waiting list, and hence the
second one added this year, so if interested be sure to contact the Lab!

Re: [Maine-birds] Banded American Oystercatcher
Hi Seth—--I was going to suggest you try BandeBirds.org which allows one to report and/or map sightings of a variety of species, but especially shorebirds. I tried entering your AMOY with (what seems like) a white leg band labelled "UC." I came up empty. That means either the band isn't white, but some other color faded to look white, or that the researches haven't entered their data into that database. Sorry!I'll be interested to know what you may come up with!—Charles

Sean Hatch <seanarih@gmail.com>: Jul 06 08:18AM -0400
Heard the Henslow's Sparrow yesterday found by Gorden Smith and its
continuing today. I must be crazy but I personally thought I heard 2
separate birds though not at the same time. Not sure if this bird can throw
its songs but at one point it was calling within 10 yds from me then while
I was still looking at the same area the call to me seem to come from much
further out maybe 30 yds. Not sure how it moved without me seeing it but
certainly not impossible.
"andrew...@gmail.com" <andrewblock7@gmail.com>: Jul 05 05:18PM -0700
Of course just after I leave Maine a Balck-necked Stilt showed up at
Scarborough Marsh:-) Just saw it posted on the Maine Birds FB grp.
Andrew
"andrew...@gmail.com" <andrewblock7@gmail.com>: Jul 05 05:13PM -0700
Just saw on the Maine birds FB page that a Henslows Sparrow is being seen
in Brunswick near the Pleasant Hill Rd./Church Rd. int. and a White Pelican
is on the St. John's River in Grand Isle. Didn't see these posted here.

[Maine-birds] Re: Black Terns at Pine Point Beach
There were two Black Terns mixed in with Common, Roseate, and Least Terns at Pine Point Beach this afternoon in Scarborough. This is only my 3rd time having this species off their freshwater breeding grounds.Bird haahd,

Thanks for speaking up! I think if more of us raise concern about some of
the attitude that has been expressed in response to posts we might see
improvement. As far as I know, Maine Birds is not just for experts to
use. All of us have made errors in ID at some point in our birding
careers, but no one should belittle anyone. Let's spend more time enjoying
a rare sighting, educating, and supporting each other in a positive way.

I would also welcome a thread about *best* ways to use the Merlin ID app.
The app is out there, widespread (not going away), and is helpful in many
ways to newbies and sharpies alike. For one, I take a stance of skepticism
towards its recommendations, but I also use it to assist my hearing. If
Merlin Sound ID suggests that there is a Golden-crowned Kinglet out there
that I haven't detected yet, I use that as a heads-up but not a
confirmation. I pause and look harder for that tiny bird.
When I think I am hearing a distant song of a certain species and then
Merlin Sound ID suggests the same ID I have in mind, I consider that a
helpful second opinion.
Any others? Any helpful "avoid using Merlin this way" tips out there?
Best,

I want to apologize for what was interpreted as snarky remarks. That was surely not my intention. I have the dubious pleasure of observing hundreds of mute swans every year and have become very well informed on how they look ( body shape, facial pattern, tail shape, etc) so for me these immediately said mute swan. I probably could have been less brusque in my presentation. I meant to shame or belittle no one. I have never used the Merlin app so i guess my opinion isn't worth any more than my opinion. I have come to trust people and the observational skills for more than a set of algorithms. I apreciate that it could be a support system for hard to hear birds in a distant jumble of birdsong.
Again i am sorry i hurt so many feelings. I will be kinder in my involvement with sightings and in how i offer my thoughts about identifications. Its the last thing i meant to do to alienate any one in my second favorite state to bird.
Again, i am very sorry
