Re: [Maine-birds] Waxwings and evening grosbeaks- in Liberty
The evening grosbeaks are certainly on the increase. The huge flocks of the 70's and early 80's may come again. Some of you my know they utilize spruce budworm caterpillars during breeding season and an increase in the budworm appears to have something to do with their return in flocks. Follow this link for an interesting read:DanaOn Nov 25, 2022, at 8:00 AM, spd...@gmail.com <spdbbh@gmail.com> wrote:I've had a flock of 8-10 Evening Grosbeaks reliably visiting my platform feeder here in Liberty for about 2 weeks. During the spring this year I had three regular visiting males who were trying to impress a multiple number of females - no observed success in the yard but with the number of poults the females brought in during the summer, I know they had success out in the woods behind us!I have one of the "persistent crabapple trees" in my front yard - one that usually feeds the late flocks of Waxwings in March. There may not be any left by March if the Turkeys do not stay out of that tree. See Photos. They are often in the tree when I go out to retrieve my morning newspaper (yes, I am a creature of habit and still have the paper delivered to enjoy with my morning coffee!) Awkward is the only way to describe the Turkeys moving about in the tangle of branches as they feed on the small crabapples. An interesting observation yesterday was watching a female (picture included) spreading her tail feathers and strut around the yard - no males around to show off to. No idea why she was doing this - I have never observed this behavior before.I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving and will soon be enjoying your Christmas BIrd Counts. Tis the season! 🦃 🌲🎀Marie JordanSouth Portland--

[Maine-birds] Isles of Shoals Christmas Bird Count
All,
Weather permitting Isles of Shoals CBC will be held aboard UNH R/V Gulf Challenger on one day during the weeks after Christmas (December 27-30 or January 2-5). As this trip is incredibly weather dependent, I'm hoping the 8 day window will give us at least one day. We probably won't know the final date until a few days before the trip sails. We will be landing (conditions permitting) on Star Island, NH and we will also spend time looking for pelagic birds in the circle. We will be chumming for seabirds as well. Previous trips have had good success at finding Snowy Owls, sea ducks (including Harlequin Ducks), Black-legged Kittiwakes, and alcids.
The price of the trip will depend on participation, but I anticipate it being between 70 and 85 dollars per person.
We will leave the Coastal Marine Lab pier in New Castle at 8 am and will return around 1 pm. Please inform others who may be interested.
Some of the people who'd already expressed interest privately to me have already signed up, so there aren't many spots left. But we don't set a date until 1-2 days beforehand, so even if you end up on a wait list, there's a good chance there will be space. Last year there was space for everyone who was available when we finally set a date.Maine birds mailing list

[Maine-birds] Six More Places To Bird in Portland
Last year, I produced a video describing the Top Six Places To Go Winter Birding in Portland. Despite a minor error or two, it got a lot of views, and triggered some suggestions for a follow-up video. See the original here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi62ARNM0K0
Over the next several weeks, I expect to piece together Six More Places To Go Winter Birding in Portland.
The places I listed last year were Pine Point, Pine Point Beach, Kettle Cove, Dyer Point, Mill Creek, and Eastern Promenade.
Additional suggestions received so far include Two Lights State Park, Back Cove, and the Fish Pier.
Before I get started, I’d welcome any other suggestions. I don’t want to overlook anyplace. Please reply offline.
Thanks,
Bob Duchesne

[Maine-birds] Pelagic Trip to Wilkinson's Basin aboard UNH Research Boat
vessel "Gulf Challenger". Graduate students from UNH were aboard to
take ocean water samples from two locations. One location was just
north of the Isles of Shoals and the 2nd location was in about 800' of
water at Wilkinson's Basin, an offshore area just east of Jeffrey's
Ledge and in Massachusetts waters. Except for these two stops, the boat
was in transit the entire time at high speed as it crossed Jeffrey's
Ledge. The boat traveled through ME, NH, MA, and again in NH waters on
return. Sunny and clouding over with light northerly winds. Seas mostly
1-2 feet.
Birds were active at Wilkinson's Basin with some surface action (tuna?)
and lots of Fulmar and many of the "good" birds for the trip. Crossing
Jeffrey's Ledge resulted in a few birds, but not many alcids yet. A
good numbers of kittiwakes in area of feeding dolphins. Separate eBird
checklists were submitted for offshore in Maine, NH, and MA waters. An
eBird trip report can be found here:

Wild Seed Project's Seeds for Teachers program provides free native seed packets to public school educators, a barrier-free initiative intended to support teachers in integrating native plants into their existing pollinator and plant units across grade levels. Seeds for Teachers packets include seeds for five northeast native species and an age-appropriate lesson plan.
