Julie Vaillancourt has had a VARIED THRUSH visiting her yard on the Penobscot River multiple times daily this week.  It's feasting on mealworms, and also seems to enjoy the bits of cooked hamburger and hard-boiled eggs she puts out for the crows.  Linda Powell and I got great views on Monday, and Linda has posted pictures on eBird.  Julie welcomes interested birders to come see it, but requests that you call her first at 745-9540 if you'd like to visit. She can give you the address and directions for parking when you call.

[Maine-birds] The Lawrence Winter Crows Delight All

On Saturday and Sunday, January 20 and 21, Dana Duxbury-Fox and Bob Fox led two  Brookline Bird Club Trips to see the Amazing Winter Crows staging and roosting in Lawrence MA.

We had wonderful folks from Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts who braved the cold to see this winter spectacle.

Both nights the Fish and American Crows succeeded in showing off their staging area while they waited for darkness to fall with and we heard those remarkable calls the American Crows make. Thank God they chose a section of the city to stage in that was relatively easy to find and more importantly easy to park. Amazingly, we didn't lose anyone!

Their departure to the roosting area always amazes me. Unfortunately for them, where they are roosting now can not accommodate them all. Bob calculated there were over 13,000 of them. Some of us managed to find hundreds of them roosting at 5:15 pm  to the southwest of their main roosting  area on the ground as the trees there were full. At this point in the winter, they are no longer using an area to roost in that can accomodate them all in trees. It will be interesting to follow them in the weeks ahead. The crows are probably at their peak numbers now with new migrants from the frozen north having arrived.

 Now that the crows have left their earlier roosting location along the New Balance Building off So. Union St. as they have done each year in late December or early January (as they have done since we began watching them in 2013), they are charting another roosting location pattern this year. The roost location may still change again this winter.

 As I tell our observers, "the Crows are in charge each night and it is my job to find them. And they never tell me their plans!"

[Maine-birds] Biddeford Kennebunkport CBC results

The 64^rd Biddeford/Kennebunkport CBC that took place on Saturday, December 30^th.   We had about 40 birders and 10 feeder watchers. The day was cloudy with occasional light rain, temperatures were in the mid-30s with a light north-north-west wind.

Total species 92, Total birds 12,303, Plus 3 CW species. 

This tied highest total species which was in 2013.  It is the 5^th highest for total birds. We had high counts for 7 species: Bald Eagle (18), Northern Flicker (7), Common Raven (25), Carolina Wren (26), Eastern Bluebird (289), Dark-eyed Junco (834), and Red-winged Blackbird (47).

The species of the day was the 2 Wilson's Warblers seen in Saco, a new bird for the count.  Other uncommon count birds were Snow Goose, Gadwall, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Yellow-breasted Chat.  Count Week birds were King Eider seen from East point, Ring-necked Pheasant that frequents a feeder in Biddeford and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

After a 3-year hiatus, we were able to have an in-person compilation this year.  It was good to see everyone and share some food and highlights of the day. 

Thanks to everyone who participated, I appreciate your efforts.  Next year's count should be on Saturday December 28th, 2024.

[Maine-birds] Fox Sparrow in Hiram today (and 2 Chipping Sparrows last week)

During today's storm a Fox Sparrow showed up at the feeder station to join 5 White-throated Sparrows and dozens of Juncos.  It was very skittish and shy about coming out for the seeds on the ground, occasionally poking its head out of a bush.  With a Sharp-shinned Hawk making periodic raids, it seemed a wise choice.  Additionally, Pine Siskins & Red Crossbills continue to be seen periodically in small numbers.

On the 9th there was an adult Chipping Sparrow seen & photographed during that storm, followed by a DIFFERENT Chipping Sparrow (winter/immature plumage) grazing with the Juncos on the cleared snowblower paths on the 10th, although eBird still hasn't parsed the second sighting and photos.  Incidentally, sparrows and Juncos seem to love having open spaces of grass cleared for them in the winter.  One White-throated last week was finding various frozen insect treats including a giant caterpillar of some kind.   Photos from 1/10 (the warm day after the storm last week):: https://ebird.org/checklist/S158615477 .

[Maine-birds] Yellow-bellied sapsucker and 4 pine warblers South Berwick

I continue to have Pine Warblers in my backyard every day, today I had a total of four.  I was also treated to a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker for a brief time as well.  Crazy yard birds for January!

[Maine-birds] Sears Island

Hello Maine birders,

Not sure this is appropriate for the listserv.  If not, I apologize but I wanted to alert Maine birders who enjoy Sears Island that one of the finest migration stopovers for migrant passerines is in danger of disappearing to development.  See the message below and attend the meeting if you are available.  I am 100% behind offshore wind development, but it would be an outrageous tragedy to ruin Sears Island when so much of the bay is already marred by industrial development.

On Saturday, January 20, the Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM), along with other Maine labor and environmental groups, will host an offshore wind informational meeting in the Searsport Community Building, 42 Prospect Street, beginning at 10 a.m.

According to NRCM promotional material, the purpose of this meeting is "to hear directly from you about your priorities for a clean energy future and any questions you may have about port development and the future of offshore wind in Maine."

To date, NRCM and other sponsors of this meeting publicly indicate that they either (a) don't care where the offshore wind manufacturing, assembling and launching facility is built or (b) outright prefer Sears Island because it has room for economic expansion.

Please join us next Saturday to let NRCM and the other meeting sponsors know that selecting the site for any offshore wind facility must adopt the least environmentally damaging plan, favor repurposing the outdated and unused industrial site at Mack Point, avoid damaging undeveloped and ecologically significant land on Sears Island, and evaluate thoroughly the impacts on climate change, wildlife and fisheries.

Urge NRCM to adopt the position that, if Maine pursues building an offshore wind facility in Penobscot Bay, Mack Point is the preferred alternative because that location is best for business, best for the environment and best for the State of Maine.

[Maine-birds] Southern York County CBC

This was the 51st year of the Southern York County CBC, and we had a new high, with 101 species, plus 3 count week species.  The previous high was 97 in 2012. The count was originally scheduled for Monday, December 19th, but due to the storm, which probably accounted for some high counts of sea birds, the count was held on Tuesday, the 20th. Still, all six sections had decent coverage.

We had 11 species with new high counts, some dramatically so, as well as 2 new species:  1 Fish Crow and the continuing Spotted Towhee. There were  250 Gannets (previous high 159 in 2009), and 1408 Black Scoters (previous high 980). 14 Dovekies showed up, just 2 less than our previous high. We also had an explosion of wrens: 10 Winter Wrens (previous high 3), 46 Carolina Wrens (previous high 28), and our 1 House Wren is the first seen since 1996. Blackbirds were also plentiful, with 55 Red-winged Blackbirds (previous high 9), 22 Rusty Blackbirds (previous high 5), and 42 Grackles (previous high 16 in 1993).  There were 17 Red Crossbills (previous high 7), 5 Pine Warblers (previous high 3), and 35 Golden-crowned Kinglets tied our previous high from 1998. We also had one new low: 6 Common Goldeneye  (previous low 19).

Thank you to everyone who participated. It was a bit of a crazy year, but you got it done!

[Maine-birds] Isles of Shoals CBC Results January 1

The Isles of Shoals Christmas Bird Count sailed on January 1.  For the third year in a row, I scheduled the boat at the last minute.  And for the first time since 1979 (!) the CBC has sailed in three consecutive winters.  This wait-and-see approach rewarded us with calm seas and minimal wind on New Year's Day, although temperatures were below freezing.  To best take advantage of tides, we started at 10:30 am and travelled directly from Boon Island before travelling south through the Isles of Shoals and making a 1-hour stop on Star Island. We made a brief tour of the other islands before traveling west to port.  Due to time constraints(we stopped for a lot of Puffins), we didn't spend as much time travelling around the other islands as we have in past years.

As is often the case on this count, ducks and seabirds were the star of the show and land birds were notably absent.  We obliterated the high count for Black Scoter (964 in 2022) with 1935 individuals, and the calls from a large flock (counted at 1535 - Thanks Steve!) were conspicuous while on shore at Star Island.  We also recorded a new high count of Atlantic Puffin with 16 and Common Murre with 11.  The puffin count is one of the highest ever recorded on any Christmas Bird Count.  We also recorded three new species for the count: Pomarine Jaeger (there are 2 prior records of Jaeger sp. which almost certainly pertain to this species), Sharp-shinned Hawk, and Palm Warbler.  In addition to these highlights, there was an unidentified loon that may have been an extremely rare Pacific Loon.  Unfortunately views were inadequate to confirm the identification.

[Maine-birds] Hepatic Tanager and Spotted Towhee

Went to see the Hepatic Tanager in Stockton Springs on 1/5 bright and early.  It eventually showed up and gave great  looks.  Awesome bird.  On 1/6 at about 915am I also got a brief look and photos of the Spotted Towhee at FortFoster in Kittery.  Took me three times to get it unfortunately.  Was very secretive and elusive for me.  But a least I saw it.  No sign of the Townsend's Warbler or any other warblers except a couple of Yellow-rumpeds at the sewage plant in Wells.

I had the pleasure of 5 Pine Warblers in my backyard today.  I have had two consistently over the past few months. One adult and one immature. Today I was thrilled to have 4 Adult and 1 immature. So late in the season!

[Maine-birds] Stockton Springs: HEPATIC TANAGER continues (1/4)...

The HEPATIC TANAGER found last week by Tom Aversa continues to be seen daily on Station St. in Stockton Springs.
