[Maine-birds] Rough-legged Hawk and Barred Owl

[Maine-birds] L/A CBC results

The Stanton Bird Club conducted its 39th Christmas Bird Count of the Lewiston and Auburn area on Saturday, December 29th. In total, seventeen people participated and recorded 42 species; the average since 2000 is 48. There was 1" of snow on the ground and most open water was frozen. The species total of 53 for the Augusta Christmas Bird Count was about average. We had a couple new records for high counts and several species had much higher than average (count has been going since 1970). I was driving down Blackpoint rd in Scarborough towards Pine Point and saw a very large bittern, which can only be an American Bittern, a bird I have strangely never seen before. It was out in the open about 15 feet from a stand of cattail looking things, on the west side of the rd near a culvert.
