[Maine-birds] Edward Howe Forbush on Crow roosts

I am attaching a quote from Edward Howe Forbush's three volume opus the "Birds of Massachusetts and Other New England States" published by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1927. In Volume two pages 399-400 I quote the following:

"In southern New England, however, many Crows remain through mild winters wherever food is plentiful. A piggery with its daily supply of garbage attracts a multitude. A corn-field from which not all the grain has been removed, the salt-marshes along the sea-coast, a crop of beechnuts or any large space of ground bare of snow will attract many winter Crows. At night these Crows assemble, sometimes from a distance of forty miles around, to a common roosting place. In New England, white pine groves are favorites for Crow roosts. Farther south deciduous trees may be chosen. In one of the New England roosts as many as 50,000 to 100,000 (estimated) Crows have gathered at night. In the Middle States the numbers of birds assembled in a roost is(sic) much larger, and the estimates reach hundreds of thousands. I have witnessed the assemblage of Crows in two large Crow roosts in Massachusetts, but those interested should read the account given by my friend, Samuel S. Roades(sic), contributed to the American Naturalist in 1886, to get an adequate idea of the character of the great roosts of the Middle States and the numbers of their occupants. In recent years many Crow roosts have been broken up by gunners and the birds composing them have scattered to roost in smaller colonies from which persecution continually drives them; nevertheless some of the larger roosts still remain to be reckoned as among the most wonderful assemblies of birds to be seen now on the continent of North America."

I googled Forbush's referenced friend Samuel S. Rhoades and found the remarkable 11-page account of roosting crows actually written by a Samuel W. Rhoads:

Rhoads, Samuel W. "Crow Roosts and Roosting Crows." The American Naturalist, vol. 20, no. 8, 1886, pp. 691–701. JSTOR, JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/2450479.

Well worth reading!

[Maine-birds] Rough-legged Hawk and Barred Owl

An amazing afternoon on Route 1A west of Harrington!  On our way from Harrington to Milbridge around 1:30pm we spotted a Rough-legged Hawk on a roadside tamarack.  Then on the way home from Milbridge back to Harrington we saw a Barred Owl sitting on a powerline at Oak Point Road.  All of this within 45 minutes.  A nice way to end 2018!

[Maine-birds] Eurasian Wigeon in Kennebunk

I posted this earlier but it didn't go through, resending without pictures.

I saw a probable Eurasian Wigeon in the Kennebunk River from Old Post Rd on Thursday, Dec 27th while scouting for the Biddeford/Kennebunk CBC. Joanne Stevens,Pat Moynahan and I saw it again Friday and it was there Saturday. Apparently it's been there since mid-Nov.

Probable transitioning male Eurasian Wigeon on Kennebunk River along Old Port Rd. He is the size of nearby American Wigeon with reddish brown head and neck, buffy patch on forehead, darker patch around eye, lighter color on breast, blue bill with dark tip, black tail with some white in front of tail, grey back, lighter gray reddish-brown sides. Photos available.

[Maine-birds] southern Maine this morning....

The continuing Eurasian and American Wigeons with Northern Pintail were out with the Mallards this morning on Old Port Road in Kennebunk.

A number of Razorbills including the usual sea ducks, loons, and grebes were out along Ocean Ave Kennebunkport. Including a small group of Harlies.

A nice raft of Common Mergansers were along the Saco River Walk. Including a number of different sparrows (but no Fields, that had been previously reported).

The Peregines were hunting around the Casco Bay bridge between South Portland and Portland.

And the continuing Ring-neck Ducks were paddleing around the river in Westbrook near the ball field.

Enjoy the New Year and be well

The Stanton Bird Club conducted its 39th Christmas Bird Count of the
Lewiston and Auburn area on Saturday, December 29th. In total, seventeen
people participated and recorded 42 species; the average since 2000 is 48.
There was 1" of snow on the ground and most open water was frozen. The
grand total of 4,331 individual birds was well below the average of 5,600.
We had a partly sunny and windy day, with temperatures starting at 32
degrees, rising to 46 by the end of the day. Count week added 3 additional
species.

Overall, waterfowl numbers were low in comparison to prior years. There
was open water on the Androscoggin River, little open water at Lake Auburn
and no open water at Sabattus or Taylor Pond. Raptor counts were up this
year, driven by a new count high of 35 Bald Eagles (21 on Sabattus pond
ice), and a new count high of 3 for Sharp Shinned hawk.

There were no new bird species added to the count this year.

Less-often-seen birds included a Merlin, a flock of Snow Buntings and Pine
Grosbeaks. Count for Tufted Titmouse and White Throated Sparrow reached
new highs, while Mallard, Song Sparrow & Northern Cardinal counts were
above average. On the low side, American Crow, Black-capped Chickadee,
Blue Jay and Mourning Dove were below average this year.

[Maine-birds] Augusta CBC summary

The species total of 53 for the Augusta Christmas Bird Count was about average. We had a couple new records for high counts and several species had much higher than average (count has been going since 1970). Species such as Eastern Bluebird and Red-bellied Woodpeckers continue to increase in our area in the winter. There were low numbers of a couple duck species likely because of the low amount of open water. For irruptive birds, we had a lot of Bohemian Waxwings and some Pine Grosbeaks but no Evening Grosbeaks or Common Redpolls. Rare or unusual sparrows for our CBC included White-Crowned, Chipping, and Fox. See a more detailed summary and a link to the complete count at: http://augustabirds.org/wp/augusta-cbc/

[Maine-birds] Crow Patrol Thursday December 27th

Last night was a memorable and beautiful night on Crow Patrol in Lawrence MA. We met Cheryl Dean of Newburyport, Rinky Black and her sister from Erving, MA and Judy Rogers of North Andover at the New Balance Parking Lot an hour before sunset (3:17 yesterday).  Richard Osborne and his wife Julia who had previously visited with us were there exploring on their own.

As stated previously, you begin by watching where the crows are flying to start each night. Last night they were flying to the south over the Riverview old mill building to our right.  That meant they were going to the So. Common Park which is along Market St. – we had seen a few gathering there on our way cross country to the parking lot.

Again who determines each night where and why they settle on a specific place??

After describing where you look (though your binoculars), and seeing some of the first waves coming in from the east over the North Andover Lawrence Airport and their moving south – NOT up the river, and seeing a few come in from the north, we headed over to the parking garage on foot. It was a sunny late afternoon in the mid-30’s with very little wind.  Some walked up as the near elevator is broken and some went up by the elevator near the train tracks.

Once up there we were regaled by thousands in the tall trees in the common, a few in some tall near trees. Then the spectacle began – waves from the west and northwest peppering the sky - so attractive in the colorful sky due to the setting sun and framed by the tall old mill chimneys  and church steeples.   Some began to gather on the roof of the B & D Warehouse to the west. Waves came from the east, the south, on large wave wove itself around the attractive Bell tower which sits over the New Balance Building. A few Fish Crows called and sat briefly on the light poles nearby giving just enough time for us to describe how you tell the difference between them and the American Crow.  The din of thousands of crows cawing, a few giving that strange rattle or burring call surrounded us. A train came by and set thousands into the air. More gathered on the roof below. A beautiful sunset peppered with crows graced us and as light began to fade, some began to head to the roost. Now after sunset, we returned to the parking lot and saw them adoring the small trees along the river along the edge of the New Balance Factory.  Black bobbles against the western sky. Bob was counting away and got to 24,000 last night!!!

As Rinky Black emailed me, “Thanks so much for sharing the excitement of the crow roost with my sister and I yesterday. It was amazing! Even my non-birder sister was enjoying herself.”

Please read about other nights and some of our references on our blog: www.wintercrowroost.com

Also, schedule a visit to Lawrence’s Essex Art Gallery at 57 Island St. to see the upcoming crow art exhibit over weekdays 10-6 January 11-March 15. Imagine three rooms with just crow art!

Plan to visit the New Balance Factory Store and  local restaurants – they all need a lift after this fall’s tragic gas problems.

Well, stay tuned for our next entry. I will let you know when we are going out next if you want to join us or follow our route.  Let us know what you see.

Re: [Maine-birds] Great Black Hawk

Hearing this report, makes me think I really did  correctly ID the hawk being harassed by 5 crows as it flew over 295 just ahead of me (near the Forest Ave exit) towards Deering Oaks.  I was certain it was not a Red Tail - but moving along in traffic at 55 mph - it was only a  quick look on my part.

[Maine-birds] Pelican No

Took advantage of the nice weather and 1st day of the federal gov't shutdown to look in the Portland area for the White Pelican. No luck around Back Cove, Eastern Prom, Bug Light, Kettle Cove, or Crescent Beach. Highlights were Brant up close at Kettle Cove and Iceland gulls at Mill Creek Cove (behind the S. Portland Hannaford). Talked to a non-birder there who described a Gadwall from today but we didn't see it.

[Maine-birds] Southern York County CBC

The MEYC CBC was held on Monday, December 19th, when 25 of us surveyed the area from Moody in Wells to Fort Foster, and inland. Weather was not great; we began in light snow and rain which continued most of the morning, followed by clearing and then more light rain with temps in the mid thirties. There was a light cover of snow, and mostly frozen fresh water. Numbers were quite low across the board. We tallied 78 species, with no new high or low counts. We had a lot of misses, too, including not a single warbler. One highlight was a lone Dovekie off the Nubble Light seen by Dough Hitchcox and Fyn Kynd. We added Red-shouldered Hawk and Ring-necked Pheasant for count week. Once again we had many Eastern Bluebirds (110), which always make the day a little better, and we were only 19 off our previous high count of Mallard, at 1,109. Yippee! Thanks to everyone who participated.

Fwd: [Maine-birds] White Pelican in Falmouth, ME, 12/24 PM

Cross-posting this to the NH and ME listserves.  A (the?) White Pelican was seen in Falmouth, ME in the afternoon of the 24th.  The last eBird post of the Pelican in New Castle, NH on the 24th was at 11 AM.  Likely the same bird, but then again, the Maine location is more than 50 miles from its New Castle location (as the Pelican flies).  Did anyone see it on the afternoon of the 24th in New Castle?

Here's what I think is the chronology of the recent Pelican sightings -

12/9 - sitting in York County, ME marshes
12/9 - PM - last seen flying south from York County
12/10 - Webhannet River, Wells, ME
12/11 -  Odiorne, Rye, NH (20 miles from Wells)
12/14-24 AM - New Castle, NH
12/24 - PM - Falmouth, ME (50 miles from New Castle, 30 miles from Wells)

What if there have been 2 birds all along - the bird seen flying south on the 9th has taken up residence in New Castle (and Odiorne), NH, while a second bird has remained in Wells and now Falmouth, ME.

Just a few general thoughts on White Pelicans on this early Christmas morning...

Merry Christmas!

[Maine-birds] Thick-billed Murre in SW Harbor this afternoon

Link to my eBird list with poor photos here.

This was around 2 pm today. There's a decent pull-out viewpoint where Alder Lane meets the Manset Shore Road (not the Seawall Road). Several years ago this was the Dovekie viewing spot.

Best,

[Maine-birds] Am. Bittern in Scarborough

I was driving down Blackpoint rd in Scarborough towards Pine Point and saw a very large bittern, which can only be an American Bittern, a bird I have strangely never seen before. It was out in the open about 15 feet from a stand of cattail looking things, on the west side of the rd near a culvert. It was in blazing afternoon sunlight, doing the slow mo bittern stalky thing they do.
