[Maine-birds] Yellow-breasted Chat - Portland, 26 Nov

Passing along a call I just got from Marian Zimmerman that the Yellow-breasted Chat at Capisic Pond Park (https://ebird.org/hotspot/L251784) is being seen this afternoon (3:50PM on 26 Nov) between the bridge and the first break in vegetation. She said it has been showing well for the last ten minutes, which sounds like ten minutes longer than most chat views!

Good birding,

[Maine-birds] Brooksville Blue Birds

Counted 6 Eastern Bluebirds in our yard today.  I told them it was time to head south, but they continued to feed and check out our Bluebird houses!
I would like to think that these are the 6 babies that fledged in one of the houses last year (2018) and have come back to check out new digs for next year!

[Maine-birds] Am. Coots, Chickawaukie Lake, Rockland

A small (so far) raft of coots has returned to Chickawaukie Lake in Rockland, visible from Route 17. Chickie can be a good winter duck spot, too, as long as there's open water, best observed from the small public park on the south end, along Route 17.

[Maine-birds] Swallow at Beach Plum Farm

I wanted to post this for anyone birding along the south coast today.  I probably had a Cave Swallow yesterday, but due to poor lighting and limited views, as well as rain, I couldn't rule out a Rough-winged or Cliff Swallow.  I viewed the bird three or four times just as the rain started.  The one good ventral view as it flew overhead indicated that it was definitely not a TRES.  The area under the throat looked a bit dusky like a NRWS, but did not seem as dark as a CLSW.  Unfortunately I never got a dorsal view before the bird disappeared.

Look closely at the swallows that are floating around York county....

Good birding,
tom

Hi all,

- 9 TREE SWALLOWS and 1 Greater Yellowlegs, Eastern Road Trail, Scarborough Marsh, 11/19 (with Jeannette).  It's impressive how many TRES continue from the apparent reverse migration event of late October!

- 1 RED CROSSBILL (FOF), Bradbury-Pineland Corridor Trail, Pownal, 11/22.

Hi all,

This morning someone sent me photos of a small white egret they
noticed yesterday morning at Rogers Pond Park in Kennebunk. Around
10am today, I arrived at the park to find a SNOWY EGRET foraging
alongside a GREAT BLUE HERON in a marshy cove of the Mousam River,
just south of Rogers Pond. Later, the bird was distantly visible from
the Mousam River Wildlife Sanctuary.

[Maine-birds] Red-necked Grebe Roque Bluffs 20 Nov

Red-necked Grebes have been here at Roque Bluffs all week. Wally heard one doing an "alert" call a few days ago, very near the shore, and it was fun to confirm the call with the Cornell on-line website. This afternoon I took some (awful) photos of a single Grebe near shore at the small tidal inlet near us. I thought it was a Red-necked Grebe, and I still think that. It has a a flat head, but its bill looks a little short. So, if you happen to look at e-bird for Washington County, you can check out my (awful) photos and if you know this to be other than the Red-necked (like, maybe a Horned Grebe), please let me know and I'll change the info at e-bird. Thank you. Carol

[Maine-birds] Bailey Island, 11/17 (BOWA, PIWA, LISP, other seasonally uncommon things).

Hi all,

Especially considering the relative dearth of "late/lingering" migrants and so-called "half-hardies" this fall, Pat Moynahan and I had a fantastic morning birding Bailey Island. Besides being pleasantly birdy overall, we had a long list of seasonal highlights:
- 1 BOHEMIAN WAXWING (First of fall; Early. Especially noteworthy and surprising given the lack of an irruption this year due to plentiful mountain-ash crops to our north and west).
- 3 PINE WARBLERS - together in a flock.
- 1 LINCOLN'S SPARROW
- 33 Red-winged Blackbirds (flock of 30 plus 3 with starlings)
- 4 Ruby-crowned Kinglets
- 3 Chipping Sparrows
- 3 Hermit Thrushes
- 2 Pine Siskins (FOF)
- 2 Northern Flickers
- 1 Savannah Sparrow

[Maine-birds] Pemaquid Harrier

It seems late in the season for it, but a Northern Harrier has been hunting today on the air field at the top of Granite Hills Rd.  Yesterday a flock of Snow Buntings was in the same area.

RE: [Maine-birds] SNBU Cumberland

Photos including the longspurs from my outing this morning are posted here: https://ebird.org/checklist/S61474591

I took a series of photos of the flock from end to end and came up with two longspurs mixed in with the snow buntings.

The Snow bunting's(20 or so) and horned larks(10)re still present as of 3:40 PM. The Snowbunting's are in the furthest distant field from the parking and as Brendan stated, avoiding the dog walkers. The horned larks were at the entrance as I pulled in however they flew out into the back edge of the middle field.

Thanks,
Rob O'Connell

Thank you for the heads up.

We saw them in the grassy area. If you are looking at the ocean, it s the grassy area to the left, and on the small rocks there that border the beach.

[Maine-birds] Webber Pond, Bremen

the feeder population is picking up again--last week had four bluebirds chasing everyone else away, and now am seeing more woodpeckers.  A downy reappeared last week and a red-bellied today.  Saw and heard a hairy woodpecker in the oak trees and had two flickers in the yard.  A few days ago a few grackles and red-winged blackbirds swept in and out, today about 30 appeared.
saw a flotilla of wood-ducks on the pond plus the usual mallards--
I think the geese may have finally departed--  the changing of the guard--

[Maine-birds] Hiram Village 11/14: Red-shouldered Hawk & continuing Chipping Sparrow

A five-minute span of time this morning produced two late rarities: a Red-shouldered Hawk being harassed by Crows at the edge of the Village Cemetery, and a hardy Chipping Sparrow that has been irregularly visiting the suet and black oil feeders.  I've noticed a lot of Chippies still being reported recently from around the southern half of the state, wondering if any of them will make it into December?

[Maine-birds] Bluebirds

Lovely, lively flock of bluebirds this morning in Auburn.  12-15 in my yard and neighbors yard.  They always seem to come back to nesting sites during the fall.  Beautiful to see them this morning.

[Maine-birds] Re: Sandhill Cranes in Smithfield

There were 21 Sandhills in the field 1/2 m from the Smithfield town center (RT 8), on the right headed to Norridgewock, and the additional group  of 12 was still there on the left after the cow farm right behind Mindy's Precision Hair Cutting today at 3:40.

Re: [Maine-birds] Digest for maine-birds@googlegroups.com - 5 updates in 4 topics

It was a beautiful morning at Sabattus Pond. Good numbers and good variety. In addition to the usual Mallards, Black Ducks, Great and Lesser Scaup, Ruddy Ducks, Buffleheads, and Common and Hooded Mergansers, there were several Ring-necked Ducks, 20 or so Green-winged Teal, one American Wigeon, two Northern Shovelers, two Pintails. There was also one first winter Iceland Gull in a flock of about 100 Herring Gulls.

We found a YTWA today around 12:45 pm in the stand of trees between the point and the house at Timber Point in Biddeford. Very active, hard to get an extended look at, but seemed to be sticking around in the area. Among a very loose flock of BCCH and GCKI.

I went to see the cranes this morning and wanted to report that they are
still there in the way, way back of the last big field before getting to
town on Rt. 8. I recommend a scope. There were +/- 18??

ETA: looking at a map, think it's the second to last big field.
