Visitors:
none.

Weather:
Rainy day. The radar showed a break in the rain at 10 am so I went up to the summit. I scanned the skies for about 20 minutes and then it started to rain pretty heavily so I headed back down with the intention of coming back if conditions cleared. Conditions alternated between light mist and rain showers for the rest of the day so I never went back up.

Raptor Observations:
None.

Non-raptor Observations:

Predictions:
Sunny skies tomorrow! Temps in mid 50's. Strong winds out of the northwest will likely keep the crowds down at the summit, but are unlikely to help with raptor migration. I expect to count at least a few birds tomorrow, despite the unfavorable winds.

[Maine-birds] More Bremen surprises

Came home, went out to feed birds, saw flash of white land on tidal flat, grabbed binoculars. Saw 1, 2, 4, for total of 16 Greater Yellowlegs that had landed and were rushing about the tidal flat. As if that weren't enough while looking through the bins at them, a red fox with dinner, crossed my view, stopped, looked at me, then continued across - no one flushed!

Life is good. Now for the next surprise.

Re: [Maine-birds] Hummingbird in Saco ME

First Yellow-Rumped Warbler today here in Eliot.  Other arrivals this week were catbird, brown headed cowbird, and a gorgeous grackle.  I have a pair of resident red-winged blackbirds for the first year, they've been here for a few weeks and I hope they will nest!

Still waiting for the Orioles and Hummingbirds.

Subject: [Maine-birds] Hummingbird in Saco ME

Our yard in Saco just had a visit from a hummingbird, unfortunately I couldn't confirm that it is a Ruby Throated. I'll let you know once I know for sure.

Also, first catbird sighting today.

Recent days, we've had visits from male and female Eastern Towhee, ruby crowned kinglet, and our usual visitors are: Red bellied Woodpecker, Flicker, titmouse, cardinals, gold finches, house finches, purple finches, many white throated sparrows, still some juncos, Eastern phoebes, in the distant- a few mockingbirds, and woodcocks in the marsh next to us.

Visitors:
6 visitors today. Thacher Carter, a reporter from The Times Record, stopped by to conduct a quick interview. This was probably the highlight of the day. Read the excellent article here: https://www.pressherald.com/2021/04/29/what-makes-bradbury-mountain-in-pownal-such-a-hot-spot-for-hawks/

Weather:
The count today was delayed by 90 minutes due to fog and ended 30 minutes early due to rain. Overcast skies all day. Gentle winds out of the south. Temps fairly comfortable, hovering at about 50 degrees all day.

Raptor Observations:
Slowwwwwwww! The precip south of us apparently cut off our supply of raptors.

Non-raptor Observations:
Non-migrants deemed migratory are as follows: -American Goldfinch: 2 -Yellow-rumped Warbler: 13 -Chipping Sparrow: 1 -Swallow Spp.: 5 -Passerine Spp.: 30 26 species detected from the summit.

Predictions:
Rainy tomorrow. Hard to say for sure but it's unlikely a full day of counting will occur. Moderate winds out of the northwest. Temps in the low 50's.

Visitors:
15 visitors today. Bill, I forgot to write your last name down so I couldnt add you as a counter, my apologies!

Weather:
Winds were quite calm at the start of the day, and increased in small increments every few hours. Temps ranged from 52 to 63. The rain held off until about 3 minutes after the count ended. Bugs were obnoxious until the wind picked up enough to keep them at bay.

Raptor Observations:
Today was such a strange day. In the first 5 hours of the day I observed 3 migrating raptors. This was despite the weak but favorable southwest winds. Just before 3pm, as I was thinking about what a disappointing day it had been, I was scanning and picked up a kettle of about 15 Broad-wings. Over the next 2 hours I tallied 114 raptors, including 81 Broad-wings. I have no idea what accounted from the sudden uptick in migration, unless the birds were waiting for the wind to strengthen enough to make it worth their while. Overall, a good day!

Non-raptor Observations:
Non-raptors deemed migratory are as follows: -Tree Swallow: 15 -Double-crested Cormorant: 185 -Great Blue Heron: 4 -Common Grackle: 1 -Barn Swallow:1 -Passerine Spp.: 10 35 species were detected from the summit, including 4 Red Crossbills that were perched in an oak tree preening as I arrived this morning. 1 horse today.

Predictions:
Northeast winds in the morning, switching to southeast in the afternoon, brining with it more rain. Conditions aren't very favorable but you never know, birds may be anxious to migrate before the impending rainstorm.

Visitors:
15 people stopped by for hawkwatching and/or a brief chat.

Weather:
Another gusty NW kinda day. But, not like the past 2 days. Skies were pretty clear with some clouds to aid in searching the skies for hawks. Temperatures were quite amenable, rising above 60F, which felt pretty nice when the wind wasn't blowing.

Raptor Observations:
Most migrant, and local bird, activity occurred during a few calmer hours in the afternoon. At one point, at least 3 Broad-winged Hawks were all displaying at the same time "out in front."

Non-raptor Observations:
Only 23 species were heard and/or seen from the summit today, with 11 Tree Swallows being the only non-raptors deemed migrating.

Predictions:
We're entering an active weather pattern with unfavorable conditions currently forecast for the next few days. the exception is tomorrow morning, however. If early morning rain stays to our south, some birds will move on light SSW winds. If the winds take a while to switch around to the SE, it might even be quite good! Clouds will dominate, however, and by the late afternoon, rain or even a few thunderstorms may arrive to bring the day to an early close. While we're now forecast to be north of a (very) warm front, a little shift further north could greatly change the forecasted weather, and forecasted hawk flight, for the end of the week.

Re: [Maine-birds] tri-color

I had brief looks at both of them (there are 2 ) at around 10 from Sawyer Road. One popped up quickly around some snowy egrets, the other on the opposite side of the road walking then settled down out of view. Both distant from the road, and not visible for very long.

Visitors:
6 visitors today.

Weather:
Another wicked gusty day up at the summit. Thankfully the sun was out and shining or it would have been pretty frigid up there. Temps ranged from 39 to 48. Winds were consistently out of the northwest.

Raptor Observations:
Today was quite slow due to the gusty north winds. It was interesting watching the few individuals that were motivated to fight the winds, you really have to admire their perseverance.

Non-raptor Observations:
Not much to report. 2 migrating Barn Swallows. 10 species were detected from the summit. Two Pine Warblers were having a serious battle up there today, they almost crashed into us mid-chase multiple times.

Predictions:
Winds will be out of the northwest again tomorrow, but not quite as gusty. Temps will be much warmer, peaking in the mid 60's. Skies mostly sunny.

Visitors:
17 visitors today. Shoutout to Beluga.

Weather:
Today was much cooler up at the summit today. Overcast all day. Temps were fairly constant all day, ranging from 52 to 57. Winds were mild out of the southeast in the am and south in the pm. It rained between 1 and 3.

Raptor Observations:
In summary, a very productive morning and a very slow late afternoon. In contrast with yesterday, we had amazing looks at many broad-wings as they glided low over the summit, often appearing to our southwest before streaming north. Broad-wings and Sharp-shins continue to dominate the count. Immature (second-year) broad-wings have yet to make any noticeable appearance. Plenty of immature sharp-shins. The flight died as the weather moved in, and never resumed once the rain moved out.

Non-raptor Observations:
A few migrating birds to look at today. Tree Swallow: 2 Double-crested Cormorant: 50 Great-blue Heron: 2 Killdeer: 1 Barn Swallow: 2 Blackbird: 8 American Goldfinch: 8 Yellow-rumped Warbler: 8 Common Loon: 1 European Starling: 3 Purple Finch: 1 Belted Kingfisher:1 35 species were detected from the summit.

Predictions:
Strong northwest winds tomorrow :/ Not exactly promising, but you never know. Temps peaking in the mid 50's. It could get pretty chilly up there, bring an extra layer if you decide to join us. Sunny skies should help with thermal development.

Visitors:
This weekend is Feathers Over Freeport! This year doesn't involve any activities at the summit, but feel free to swing by and help us spot some hawks tomorrow! 35 visitors today. 3 horses stopped by to check things out. 3 green balloons were spotted. 1 Garter Snake. Info about Feathers over Freeport: https://www.maine.gov/dacf/parks/discover_history_explore_nature/activities/feathers_over_freeport.shtml

Weather:
Today was quite balmy up at the summit. Temps peaked at 68 degrees. Skies were mostly sunny, with some awesome billowing clouds building later in the day. Winds were weak to moderate out of the NW, occasionally gusting up before settling back down.

Raptor Observations:
Today was a good day! Birds were high and distant today, more so than usual. Broad-wings made up the bulk of the flight. Diversity in species was a little lacking.

Non-raptor Observations:
Non-raptors deemed migratory are as follows: Double-crested Cormorant: 34 Tree Swallow: 21 Common Loon: 1 Barn Swallow: 2 House Finch: 2 A total of 22 species were detected from the summit, including FOS Blue-headed Vireo singing this morning.

Predictions:
Tomorrow could be interesting. Overcast skies and patchy rain is not promising. But winds will be out of the south! The only way to find out what will happen is to show up tomorrow and look for hawks. Temps will be in the mid-50's. Info about Feathers over Freeport: https://www.maine.gov/dacf/parks/discover_history_explore_nature/activities/feathers_over_freeport.shtml

Fwd: [Maine-birds] Yellow-rump, finally. Corrections!

I must have been very excited to see that bird, to call it "Yellow-rumpled". I hope you got a chuckle anyway.
But calling the  precious White-Throated Sparrows, "Yellow-throated"...beyond excuse, stupid.
Apologies. Fading.

A Yellow-rumpled Warbler came to my feeder this afternoon in Sanford. I was delighted when later it came to the top step of my porch where I was sitting just a few feet away. It is still delightful to see the Yellow-throats and other sparrows. I'm thinking that my favorite common year round bird is the Tufted Titmouse...those cute black eyes on blue-ish feathers. Woops. I got carried away.

[Maine-birds] Eurasian/ x American Wigeon

After taking a close look on a big monitor, my Timber Point drake Eurasian Wigeon from this morning may have a touch of hybrid American in it. I loaded a few more lightened photos into my checklist, and while the photos are crummy, the gape looks to have a bit of American character, front buffy area seems a bit extensive, and, something that wasn't evident in the field, what appears to be a faint but slightly darker aricular shadow. Possibly an F2. I'd be very interested to see what others think, if anyone got better views in the field or good photos.

Visitors:
13 visitors today. RC truck drivers were up at the summit again. I learned that some of their setups can cost > $700 if you can believe it.

Weather:
Holy cow it was gusty up there today! Many a snack was lost to the wind today as families attempted to picnic and then packed up and left as their belongings got blown around the summit. Winds started out of the west but rotated to the northwest around 11 am. Thankfully the sun was shining and temps were very comfortable (high of 65).

Raptor Observations:
Another slow day!! 31/32 birds were seen in the first 4 hours. Once the gusty winds shifted to the north, the flight all but shut down. The local buteos didn't mind the strong winds, they spent the entire day kiting into the wind and then diving down into the forest after the prey they spotted.

Non-raptor Observations:
Not much to report here. FOS Winter Wren sang very weakly (strange for them, I know) once and then was silent. Migrants are as follows: Passerine Spp.: 17 American Goldfinch: 1 Double-crested Cormorant: 1 Tree Swallow: 1 A total of 17 species were detected from the summit.

Predictions:
The ferocious winds should be much tamer tomorrow, and out of the west instead of the northwest. Skies should be mostly sunny and I expect to see some birds. Temps will be in the high 60's.

Re: [Maine-birds] Re: White-winged Dove

I thoroughly searched the neighborhood for a couple hours this afternoon, ending at 3:45, and saw no sign of the White-winged Dove. Another birder was also scouring the area with no luck, and I believe several other people searched this morning with the same result.

The bird continued as of 4:30 (when I left). After 30 or 40 minutes of searching, Jeff and Allison drove by and gave us a pointer to look next to the fence next to the little parking lot. Shortly after, the White-Winged and a couple MODO's took off from hiding in the tall grass beside the fence at 44.225990, -69.778652. It flew to a cedar tree behind the parking lot on Washington Ave (44.225692, -69.778563), and remained very well hidden and hunkered down until I departed an hour later.

Also of note was an out-of-place Field sparrow, which sang once, also was joined by a Savannah Sparrow.

Thanks Jeff and Allison for the find and the tips!

Subject: [Maine-birds] White-winged Dove

For Earth Day it seems that our neighborhood in Gardiner has been blessed with the presence of a White-winged Dove. The area that we know the bird is frequenting is between the intersections of Chestnut Street and Washington Avenue and Elm Street and Washington Avenue. This is a residential area with lots of homes and apartments and people living their lives including many who are working from home because of Covid (ourselves included—the Zoom meetings don't stop even for this). We would like to ask that anyone coming to look for the bird be particularly sensitive to that and stay on sidewalks, do not obstruct driveways or park or stand on lawns, follow COVID protocols related to masks and spacing, and be friendly to passersby and neighbors with explanations as to what you are looking for and how special it is, etc. We have told our immediate neighbors about the bird (they are delighted!) but lives must continue, so if a homeowner or neighborhood dweller inconveniences you while you're watching the bird (or trying to), be understanding. Washington Avenue has a fair amount of traffic so please be very careful and don't stand in the street or park in such a way that makes it difficult for traffic to pass. One possibility for easy and out-of-the-way parking would be to park along School Street or Dresden Avenue beside the Gardiner Common and walk across Brunswick Avenue (Rt. 201) to the area, which is only a few blocks. We have also attempted to reach the Gardiner Police Department to alert them about the possibility of people being around the neighborhood with binoculars and cameras but were only successful in leaving a message so they may be delayed in hearing about it. Several police officers live in the general vicinity as well so they me among those that would stop and ask what you are doing.
