[Maine-birds] YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD continues, Freeport, 6/30pm

Hi all,

After a mid-day hiatus, the YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD in Freeport has returned and visitors are welcome.

The bird is to be viewed ONLY from the parking lot of Gritty McDuff's in Freeport, off of US Route One, a short distance south of downtown.  As you enter the parking lot, proceed towards the front entrance. The feeder is in front of low windows on the side of the apartment complex on your left - roughly opposite the front entrance.

Because of the proximity to parking lots and limited cover nearby, it is best to view the feeders from within your car. Searching for the bird would likely cause it to avoid coming into the feeder.

I just spoke with the General Manager of Gritty's, and he is very happy to allow folks to use his lot and was excited for people to have the opportunity to view it. However, this is a very busy business, and if visits can be made BEFORE 11:00am when they open, conflicts will be prevented. Before 11:00, a dozen or more cars can easily view the feeders. After 11:00? Good luck finding parking!

Many thanks for understanding and good luck!

-Derek

[Maine-birds] YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, Freeport, 6/30 am.

Hi all,
Following on the heals of yesterday's YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD in Wells, we received a report of one this morning in Freeport. Unfortunately, it has not been seen since at least 10:30am. If it returns, I will post observation opportunity details.

In the meantime, keep your eyes on your feeders!

[Maine-birds] AOS Checklist changes for 2021

The 62nd supplement is out ... at least the ABA's take on it ... see
https://www.aba.org/the-2021-aos-supplement-is-out/

The major changes, at least for Maine and the Northeast, are a ton of
new scientific names and major changes in the passerine sequence of
families - Shrikes drop below Vireos, Tits move to follow Jays / Crows,
Gnatcatchers above Wrens, and Thrushes below Mimics and Starlings. All
in all not too bad. None of the splits effected the Northeast birds.

Re: [Maine-birds] Get ready for the Big Atlas Weekend! (25-27 June)

I will be out there atlasing this weekend. I moved from Maine to Maryland so I am on an opposing team.
I think competitions like this are a great idea.
Have fun out there everyone.

I'm excited to announce this weekend is will be the first-ever "Big Atlas Weekend", a multi-state competition for birders to focus on breeding birds, build birding skills, and come together as a birding community. There will also be a chance to win prizes from different Atlasing challenges.

Anyone can participate by birding between 6:00 pm Friday, June 25 and 11:59 pm Sunday, June 27 and submitting checklists through the Maine Bird Atlas portal in eBird.

You can read the full details about the event here: https://ebird.org/atlasme/news/big-atlas-weekend-june-25-27/
Important to note we'll be hosting a Kickoff Event on Wednesday night (23 June @ 7PM), which will include a presentation by Purbita Saha and Stephanie Beilke from the Galbatross Project talking about female bird song and identification and female bird days.
Our usual Maine Bird Atlas Weekly Q&A (24 June @ 6:30PM) will have a Big Atlas Weekend focus - bring any questions!
Links for these events, plus the various challenges and prizes are in the above event post.

And most importantly!!! There will be an interstate competition between four state currently conducting atlasing: New York, Maine, Maryland-DC, and North Carolina. We'll compete based on nocturnal effort hours in priority blocks, confirmed codes submitted in priority blocks, and number of atlas checklists submitted with at least one coded species. Let's bring the Big Atlas Weekend Champion trophy to Maine!

Good birding and happy atlasing!

[Maine-birds] Cliff Swallows

June 15 - Today I went to a senior meeting and lunch at Charleston Church. There are 3 active Cliff Swallow nests at the front of the building! I watched them for some time. After getting home, I wrote an email to the church to let them know about the birds. if they were not already aware of their presence. I encouraged them to not disturb the birds and allow them to continue nesting there. It has been a long time since I've seen these swallows and their nests!

Hi all,

Back on the mainland, my observations of note over the past seven days included the following:

2 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Green Point WMA, Dresden, 6/1 (with Jeannette).

1 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, Hedgehog Mountain Park, Freeport, 6/2. Surprising and out of place in a seasonal stream in the deep woods. My 152nd Patch Bird for the Hedgehog complex.

1 Red Crossbill, Otter Brook Preserve, Harpswell, 6/3 (with clients from Maine).

Handful of passage migrants around Biddeford Pool on 6/4 including a female MOURNING WARBLER (FOY) and an immature male Bay-breasted Warbler.

And FYI, we still have a limited amount of room on Monday's Mini-Pelagic out of Boothbay Harbor.  It will be a great way to beat the heat at least!  And we'll be swinging by Eastern Egg Rock before heading to deeper water (with chum). I live around a site that  used to have large numbers of bobolinks (across the road from my house) now it is farmed and they cut and hay- so not anymore- i see a few where there are other fields . BUT better a farm than a housing development!n

Re: [Maine-birds] Bobolinks

I have our normal number here (about 8 pairs), but the haying schedule is brutal. Bobolinks are declining in Maine about 3% each year, in large part because of ag practices. The ones in the fields around my house didn't make it last year— except for the one newly hatched baby I found in a nest. I don't own the land, the fields are leased out,  and the owner won't intervene for various reasons. He's a good guy, it's just that his sympathies are with the farmers.

I have reached out to Ag Allies who have approached the farmers, so we'll see about this year. It might be a good resource for others.

[Maine-birds] Re: Possible new Martin colony - Frenchboro

First *recent* recorded colony in Hancock. Based on P. Vickery's book there have been none since at least 1978, but I'd imagine that there were probably some before that when Martins were more common in the state.

We saw no males. If confirmed, this would represent the first recorded colony in Hancock Co., and add to the 6 active colonies in the state. We didn't discover them until 10 minutes before the boat came to take us back, so it's definitely worth an investigation to confirm breeding and the presence of a colony!

[Maine-birds] spotted sandpiper

Found two spotted sandpipers at a water hole in a gravel pit near Greenfield. They acted as if they were drawing me away from young or a nest. They'd fly close to me and land...then fly away in different directions. I took a couple of clicks and moved on.

Cheers

[Maine-birds] Chukar in Fryeburg 6-3-21

A CHUKAR was seen, photographed and caught on digi=binned video late in the day on Thursday at Mountain Division Trail in Fryeburg.  The bird was feeding around the edges of the paved trail and around the disused railroad tracks between miles 47.8 and 48.3.  It seemed somewhat unwary but would not allow close approach.   Attempts to relocate it yesterday were unsuccessful.

Also at Mountain Division Trail on 6-3 were a female RUFFED GROUSE doing a distraction display that involved limping as if to feign an injury, oud squealing and Gray Squirrel-like noises to draw attention away from her 6 chicks who were under a nearby bush.   Also present were a conspicuous male INDIGO BUNTING who's been singing at mile 47.5, several singing SCARLET TANAGERS, COMMON NIGHTHAWKS overhead and 2 singing EASTERN TOWHEES.   Towhees are locally common and can easily be found along the stretch between miles 47.5 and 50 of the trail, though they are more vocal around dusk.

Additionally there were CANADA WARBLERS, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and various other common warbler species.   Mountain Division Trail is a great place to walk and bird, as it's paved, has good vantage points for viewing.

[Maine-birds] Maine Bird Atlas update

The 4th breeding season for the Maine Bird Atlas (http://maine.gov/birdatlas), a project by the Maine Dept of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, is well underway and I wanted to share a few updates here:

First of all, happy June! June 1st an especially happy day for atlasers because we are now within the safe dates for almost all species, except for a few late migrants. That means it is now "safe" to report possible codes (S & H) and the lower probable codes (S7, M, P) for almost every species you encounter. A table of safe dates is available here: https://www.maine.gov/ifw/fish-wildlife/maine-bird-atlas/docs/Maine-Breeding-Bird-Safe-Dates.pdf

Second, we started a new listserv, called "Maine Bird Altas Block Busters," for anyone that wants to post atlas specific questions or plan efforts this summer. That listserv uses Google Groups, just like Maine-birds, so joining should be very easy. Glen Mittelhauser posts weekly summaries of blocks that are nearly completed in each county (low hanging fruit for volunteers to target), plus we've had some informative discussions around how best to confirm certain species or particular times to go atlasing. You can read the discussions or join the group here: https://groups.google.com/u/1/g/atlasblockbusters

For anyone who missed our 2021 Season Kickoff Meeting, the recordings from that event are online now, available under the Communications/Outreach section of the Resources and Materials page, here: https://www.maine.gov/ifw/fish-wildlife/maine-bird-atlas/resources-materials.html. I highly recommend watching at least the 2021 Season Introduction (https://youtu.be/N4027qqRwXw) to see an overview of the project, results from the first 3 seasons (jump to 0:13:00), tips for strategic atlasing (0:31:05), info on special species surveys (0:41:38), and a "sneak peak" into what the final product will look like (0:48:06).

I'll end this with a quick plea: please go atlasing in priority blocks this summer. Completing all of the priority blocks is a high priority (get it) because it gives us good systematic coverage of the state and will improve the quality of this atlas for comparison with past (and future) efforts. We've had enough effort (by hours) submitted so far to the Maine Bird Atlas eBird portal to have completed all of the priority blocks at least three times already, but we are sitting at only 40% complete right now. The problem is all that effort is going into blocks, mostly ones with birding "hotspots," that are already completed. By directing just a bit of your birding this summer to an incomplete priority block, you can help us make this project a success. These birds that we all love and appreciate are quite literally depending on the success of this project. The results from the Maine Bird Atlas will be used in guiding future species status assessments, priority species' needs, and identifying and conserving high value wildlife habitats.

Good birding and happy atlasing!
