Re: [Maine-birds] Accessing Winding Brook Turf Farm

Hi Weston, and all—

I've only birded Winding Brook a few times, beginning last year looking for AGPL.  That time, I asked permission from a worker at the barn who was friendly and waved me in as if it were no biggie at all.  I've heard similar from others.  There are several dirt farm roads, each plenty wide to pull off on the edges to scan fields, and you'll see some slightly larger clearings where you can park (obviously avoiding any with active work going on).  The productive fields change from year-to-year and maybe even day-to-day.  The relatively more visible presence of Killdeer may be the best clue to what's where.

Pull in from Alfred Street at the Winding Hill farm sign and then turn right at the barn.  In a short distance, there's a left turn at an old family cemetery (just under the T in "Turf Farm" on the sat-photo).  Today we made that turn (perhaps a bad choice!) and followed the road down to a cleared area some 500-800' farther along.  We parked there (next to a truck that belonged to a friendly man shooting skeet with his sons) and walked down along the drainage ditch toward the northwest, staying out of the plowed fields.  We scoped the farthest plowed field from there, finding the BBSA at the red pin on the map after being alerted by a LOT of Killdeer.  We never were able to get close to the Buffies, in part bc we we didn't want to miss a good tide at Basket Island and forced ourselves to leave without exploring further.

A better idea might have been to continue straight at the little cemetery, following the road to the left where it turns near two houses and a horse paddock.  We've been told that the owners there don't seem to mind birders being nearby.  The field with the red pin has now been plowed; it is downhill from the horse paddock area.  (The drainage ditch where we were is the low point, of course, so we were looking up the field toward the birds/pin.)

Hope this helps!

[Maine-birds] Exeter, NH Wastewater Treatment Plant - SITE WORK WARNING AND SAFETY ALERT!

The Exeter WTP has been seeing increased traffic by birders in the last
few years and this has resulted in some nice finds including the
Black-bellied Whistling Ducks this spring and the recent Black Tern.
Unfortunately, this means more birders and the need to educate new
visitors to the site.

Matt Berube, the Water & Sewer Manager for Exeter, let me know that
there will be extensive site work from now through November, and again
next Spring for a few months.  They are in the process of dredging and
hauling away sludge pillows and 6 to 8 trucks of sludge every day will
be hauled away.  TRUCK TRAFFIC IN AND OUT OF THE SITE WILL BE HEAVY and
the last thing they want to see is a birder/scope/tripod blocking their
egress.  They will quickly close the site to birders if they block
traffic.  Matt has also expressed concern about birders disregarding
safety at the plant recently.

Please abide by these simple rules:

1) Don't under any circumstances drive in to the lagoons!  Park in the
LINED PARKING SPOTS ONLY.  DO NOT BLOCK the septage building near the
main gate!  Very important.

2) Stay along the main dikes/trails only! Do not walk down into the
rocks to get photos, etc.  Do not walk across fields!  STAY ON PATHS!

3) BE AWARE OF TRUCKS!!!   Never leave your scope unattended on the road
where it could block a truck!!

4) Use common sense and be aware of what is going on around you. Don't
interrupt their work flow!!

We have been extremely fortunate to have the privilege of being able to
bird here over the decades and are lucky that they are allowing us
access during this site work.  If we don't follow these rules, we may
lose this privilege forever.  If you see anyone not following these
rules, then talk with them and explain that these rules need to be followed.

If you have any questions, then let me know.

Matthew's bird had replaced (gray) scapulars, as well as a few other minor differences, while the bird that I observed today had all of its juvenal scaps intact.

It looks like the photos that Noah Gibb and Charles Duncan took on the 18th depict the same individual that I observed today (that is, different from the individual that Matthew found and photographed on the 17th).

[Maine-birds] MIKI - False Alarm

For those of you who got the eBird alert of a potential Mississippi Kite in Washington Co. I want to apologize. After staking out the same location for another hour I was able to locate the bird in question for a better look. It was a BLACK TERN hawking insects over the pond. The angle of the light, and distance, denied me a good look at the bill, and the overall whiteness of the chest should have made me hesitate.

Had it been indeed a MIKI I would have loved to shared the sighting with anyone around, so just in case, I posted it to eBird.

The post has since been deleted. I have relocated the bird for some very close looks in better light. I was not very familiar with Black Terns before. I am now.

I apologize for any miles I may have put on anyone's car. I will eat my three-tier cake of abject humility in the corner now.

Thanks & Apologies,

Ian Carlsen

[Maine-birds] Frigatebird in Hampton, NH this evening

A Magnificent Frigatebird was found by JoAnn O'Shaugnessy this evening
soaring over her house on Great Boar's Head!!!  It hung out there for
close to an hour and was seen and photographed by a few birders.  Sadly,
Jane and I arrived 30 seconds too late.  :-(

The bird was then seen wayyy up in Rye, NH near Odiorne by Jim Sparrell
about 40 minutes later.  Once again, it disappeared before many could
see it as it got dark out.

Birders along the coast from south coastal, Maine to north coastal, MA
should keep their eyes out tomorrow for this bird, which may be in the area.

Re: [Maine-birds] Help with bird ID?

Thank you. Yes, I got the same ID from Louis Bevier.
I thought Solitary at first because the eye ring looked so clear, but the beak and legs were so dark. Also it seemed a little shorter, hunkered down on the rock.
All of which shows the difficulty looking at birds in such bright sunlight, and I agree no nearby birds for comparison!

It looked like the wings extended beyond the tail.  A slight eye ring, also a bit of a white smudge at the lore. Seemed to me to look more grey than brown, but the sunlight was quite harsh on it.
I'm thinking it was a Baird's Sandpiper?
It hung out on a rock for a good while, it wasn't trying to feed,  just resting. The river is quite low there, about 2 feet.
I posted a few not great photos I got using my iPhone through my binoculars.

[Maine-birds] Blue-winged Teal @ Laudholm Farm

Maine Young Birders Club happened upon 11 Blue-winged Teal near Laudholm Farm. At the pond to the left of Barrier Beach trail. Be aware it's like 6 million degrees out there and there's at least 20 million mosquitos, but a nice surprise and supposedly "unreported" here. If you continue to the beach there's a good showing of shorebirds.

[Maine-birds] Baxter Backpacking Trip

For the past 9 days I have been hiking and backpacking in Baxter with a group including Garrett Erickson-Harris, another young birder. There were a number of avian highlights, although the trip was hiking-focused and I didn't even have binocs with me for most of it.

Our first three nights were at Roaring Brook, which was very very quiet, despite what the name would suggest. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that the roaring brook completely drowned out the birds... We hiked Katahdin on 8/4.

From 8/6-8/8 we were at Russell Pond. The area around Russell Pond is very boreal in every direction. From the lean-to there we heard White Winged Crossbill calls almost every 10 or 15 minutes, and heard Siskins nearly as often. Russell Pond had a solid 5 species of finches. All except one of our BOCHs were within 3 or 4 miles of Russell Pond, and they were the only boreal year-rounders we encountered.

For the last two nights we were at South Branch Campground, which was fully deciduous and had by far the most bird activity (along with the day hike from the campground up to North Traveller Ridge).

56 Total Species, including totals of:
  • 7 Boreal Chickadees (1 on our Katahdin Hike, 2 on the Russell Pond Trail, 3 on the Wassataquoik Lake Trail including one 3 feet from my face, and 1 on the Pogy Notch Trail)
  • 1 Woodcock surprise (Pogy Notch Trail)
  • 1 Yellow-Bellied Flycatcher (Katahdin)
  • 60+ White Winged Crossbills (Everywhere at Russell Pond, and a small group each at North Traveller Mtn and Basin Ponds on Katahdin)
  • 50+ Pine Siskins
  • 10+ Red Crossbills
  • 6 Blackpoll Warblers
  • Hundreds of GC Kinglets

[Maine-birds] RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, Pownal, 7/31-8/1 (belated report).

Hi all,

Last weekend, a Rufous Hummingbird paid an all-to-brief visit to our Pownal backyard. Unfortunately, she was not present upon our return from a vacation.

Here are photos and some additional notes:

Without in-hand measurements, some might argue that identification of adult female Selasphorous hummingbirds cannot be absolutely certain, but everything we have points nicely at a Rufous.

[Maine-birds] Kittery seawatch

I’ve started a late afternoon seawatch from Fort Foster in Kittery Point surveying the briny from the most southerly point in the state you don’t need a boat to get to. Only two days so far and not much to report yet, but have seen bonies, laughing gulls, gannets, dribbles of shorebirds, pulses of swallows, and the usual suspects like herring gulls, greater black-backs, common eiders, and cormorants galore.  Hummmmmingbirds are showing up in odd places, dueling with big dragonflies, and where I usually sit with my scope there is are Mockingbirds feeding young who have already become used to my presence and forage with a few yards of me.  I’ve tried to start a conversation without reply!

Waiting for whimbrels,  Dave Tucker

[Maine-birds] Solitary Sandpiper (Pittsfield)

For the last two weeks, we have had the pleasure of hosting a Solitary Sandpiper on the large puddle immediately adjacent to our barn door (and manure pile).  When they first appeared, they would leave whenever we came out to the barn - now, they rarely flush, or if they do, they simply flutter to the other end of the puddle.  We always announce our comings and goings to Sol, who has become quite blasé about people walking within about 10'.  It has been a real treat watching it become accustomed to us, and it's now here most of the day.  I imagine it will be leaving soon to continue migrating, but hopefully it has been filling up on invertebrate goodness.

[Maine-birds] Downeast birding festival trips August 13th-15th

Hi all,

The Cobscook Institute is hosting birding trips and nature talks from August 13th - 15th in Washington County. Birding trips include a tour around Machias Seal Island (no landing on the island) from Cutler to see nesting Atlantic Puffin and other alcids; a boat ride through Head Harbor Passage from Eastport to search for Bonaparte's gulls, little gulls, and other seabirds; and a shorebirding trip at the South Lubec Sand Bar.  Volunteer guides include Doug Hitchcox, Woody Gillies, and myself.  For more info, please visit this link:

Cheers,

Chris Bartlett
