[Maine-birds] Lapwing in Kennebunkport

While conducting an area count for the CBC today I encountered a Northern Lapwing consorting with a Killdeer in a field on Arundel Road initially opposite #252, and later a few hundred yards east near a large brown house set back in the field. There is a white fence between the road and the field which makes for a convenient place to rest a camera.  I must admit I was quite surprised when the bird entered my binoculars!

[Maine-birds] Sage Thrasher or lapwing photo to share?

Does anyone have a photo of the Sage Thrasher that's been seen in Falmouth or a Houlton lapwing pic that Jeff and I can use for credit in our column?

If so, please send to me privately. Thank you!

[Maine-birds] Isles of Shoals CBC - Tomorrow December 29

The Isles of Shoals CBC is going to set sail tomorrow, December 29  Thanks to a few cancellations, I have few last minute spots.  If you're interested in going, we're departing from New Castle at 11 am (meet at the dock at 10:15) and returning around sunset.  We split the cost of the boat among the participants.  If you're interested in going, please EMAIL me before 8 am tomorrow morning and I'll confirm your spot and send you more information.  I've included the initial announcement below.

Ben Griffith
Plymouth, MA

Weather permitting Isles of Shoals CBC will be held aboard UNH R/V Gulf Challenger on one day during the weeks after Christmas (December 27-30 or January 2-5).  As this trip is incredibly weather dependent, I'm hoping the 8 day window will give us at least one day.  We probably won't know the final date until a few days before the trip sails.  We will be landing (conditions permitting) on Star Island, NH and we will also spend time looking for pelagic birds in the circle.  We will be chumming for seabirds as well. Previous trips have had good success at finding Snowy Owls, sea ducks (including Harlequin Ducks), Black-legged Kittiwakes, and alcids.

The price of the trip will depend on participation, but I anticipate it being between 70 and 85 dollars per person.

We will leave the Coastal Marine Lab pier in New Castle.

Some of the people who'd already expressed interest privately to me have already signed up, so there aren't many spots left.  But we don't set a date until 1-2 days beforehand, so even if you end up on a wait list, there's a good chance there will be space.  Last year there was space for everyone who was available when we finally set a date.

Thanks,

Benjamin Griffith

[Maine-birds] Decent Siskin #'s

I noticed over 30 Pine Siskins at our feeders today in Cape Neddick, Maine.

The #'s have been increasing over the past 2 weeks with today's high of 32 birds more than doubling last week's high of 12 birds.

Lots of goldfinches, hairy and downy woodpeckers, titmice and chickadees mixed in. A handful of juncos on the periphery, too.

Enjoy our wild neighbors,

[Maine-birds] Sage Thrasher at Gilsland Farm Today

Saw the Sage Thrasher at Gilsland Farm today about noon-time.  Had to wait about an hour for it to appear.   There were about 15+ people there who saw it at that time.

To answer the question about where it is being seen at Gilsland.  From the parking lot (opposite side of the lot from the Nature Store), there is a walking path.   Follow the path through the woods to an open field.  The trail splits.  Take the trail to the left and go up over a grassy hill.  Follow the trail bearing left into the woods.  The trail will be going downhill and when you get to the bottom, there is a small cut to the left out into a marshy area.  You will probably see other birders standing in the marshy area, looking towards the trees/brush.

When I saw the Thrasher, it was behind a white tree (has a round hole about two feet off the ground), walking parallel to the tree line towards a pole with a yellow flag attached to it.

Hope this is helpful.  It is kind of hard to describe the path and its turns.   Watch for other birders coming back or heading down the path.  I had to ask a few people to make sure I was headed in the right direction.

Good luck!

It came from the side away from the marsh and came to the winterberry on the marsh side between the Peter Phaneuf bench and the Lolly bench (where the marsh overlook is). Lighting was difficult for photos, but good looks could be had from the sign marking the Red Maples. It ate and rested for a few minutes, not moving from the bush it was in.

Townsend's Solitaire is still at Laudholm Farm in York County as of early this afternoon.  Observed today at 13:07 on the boardwalk trail near the marsh overlook.   I saw it in the same place that it was reported at yesterday -- in front of the Peter Phaneuf bench.  It flew down from a tall pine/evergreen tree onto a small tree about 25 feet in front of the bench.  Moved to a Winterberry bush where it ate one Winterberry, moved to another small tree and then reversed direction and headed towards the overlook.   It crossed over the boardwalk and landed somewhere in a tangle of Winterberry bushes, just opposite the Loll bench.   Got a few good looks and clearly saw the complete eye ring and the brown/rusty patches on the wings.  Very gray bird overall.

Added benefit:  just as I started on the main trail at Laudholm, a porcupine crossed the road in front of me, waddled over to a small tree and started eating the bark.  It was unperturbed by me walking by.  I saw it again as I returned to my car in the same area, happily gnawing on something.   Again, it was not disturbed by me nor a jogger who jogged right past it within about three feet of it.  Must be used to people.

Re: [Maine-birds] Townsend's Solitaire

I believe there may be only one Peter Phaneuf bench,  but it seems like the entire family has a bench on that board walk as there are multiple Phaneuf benches. Right at 1:00 PM and right on cue, the bird flew in to that spot yesterday.

This was after successfully observing the Broad-tailed Hummingbird at 9 AM in Freeport.

Go to the Laudholm Farm website and look at their trail map.  There are 2 ways to get to the spot, and I think I took the long way.  Follow the sign that says "Trails."  When you get to the fork that says "Barrier Beach Trail" or "Cart Path," you can either take the Barrier Beach Trail and then hang a left when you reach the Laird-Norton Trail, or take the Cart Path and hang a right when you reach the Laird-Norton Trail.  The Peter Phaneuf Bench is just before the observation deck if you come in from the Barrier Beach trail, or just after the observation deck if you take the Cart Path.

Just saw on the Maine Birds FB group that there's a Western Tanager in Blue Hill in someone's yard.  With this girl, the solitaire, and the kingbird the CBC's should have some goodies this year.

[Maine-birds] Not a bird....

Hi,

Sorry to break site protocol, but I salvaged a pristine bobcat carcass (reported yesterday) near the roadway at Weskeag Marsh this morning. If there is anyone, or environmental organization, interested or capable of preserving this impressive animal, he's a beauty! If so, please respond quickly to: sherreal@hotmail.com. I don't plan to keep him on ice.

[Maine-birds] Raft of Razorbills off of Seawall today (Acadia National Park)

Hi all - Part of today's MDI Christmas Bird Count for the team I was on included the Seawall Picnic area in Acadia National Park. In our scope, we counted a raft of 40 Razorbills, presumably brought in close by this weekend's weather system. The birds were rafting and resting, not flying by, and we had good looks in our scope of their massive bills and their unique resting silhouettes (bills pointed slightly upward, black-and white coloration, and a few in short-distance flights). I have never seen 40 Razorbills from the mainland, and only infrequently see single Razorbills in the immediate waters off of MDI.

Best,
