[Maine-birds] Re: suspicious emails using Doug Hitchcox name

Hello Maine birders,
Is this how I may reach Doug Hitchcox?
I believe someone is using his name/email for sending things like CBD advertising and who knows what - I only opened one email.

[Maine-birds] York County CBC results

The 53rd MEYC CBC was held on Monday, December 15th. The official name is the York County CBC, though it really should be the Southern York County CBC, as it only extends from Kittery to Moody.

It was cold, windy and relatively quiet, but our overall totals were OK. The species total was 84, only a little lower than our 20 year average of 87. (2023 was a crazy exception with 101.)  The bird count was 9005, a little lower than our 20 year average of 10,416.

We did manage to have one new high count: 7 Brant.  We had our first Killdeer in 16 years, our first Glaucous Gull in 12 years, and a relatively high count for Sharp-shinned Hawks with 5.  Two Rough-legged Hawks tied our record.  37 Horned Larks was our highest tally since we had 52 in 1983.  We had 21 Evening Grosbeaks, our highest total since 87 in 1991, and we haven't had any in 29 of the 33 years since then.

On the down side, it was the first time we haven't had any Razorbills since 1998, breaking our streak of 26 years.  (Our average count over those 26 years was 56, but zero this year!)  And we had only 12 Robins, compared to 494 last year.

If you have any questions, or might be interested in more details, including a spreadsheet that shows the count #'s per species since 1981, please send me an email.

[Maine-birds] BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK - Madison, 18 Dec

A BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK was photographed *by a bird feeder* today (18 Dec) in Madison (Somerset County). A video was posted on Maine Birds Facebook group by the homeowner, Carla Cough, she (and Gregory Cough) are willing to have visitors. From Carla: "We are fine with it and they can park on the side of the road in front of our house or in our driveway on the right side of the driveway so that my husband can drive his truck out of the garage." They are at 32 Sierra Lane, Madison, off Blackwell Hill Rd. "Third house down on the left, grey Cape and the feeder is right in front of the house"

Good birding,

Great Blue Heron in flight over Lafayette and Cumberland aves. on Tues.

Wednesday heard possible Pine Grosbeak in trees in same area. Could spot but not positively identify   due to weather conditions.

Re: [Maine-birds] TVs in Kennebunk today

In Vickery's Birds of Maine, he says, "Wintering vultures first found along coast in 1980's" and then goes on to list inland records in the 1990's.
So, I'd say yes!

[Maine-birds] Isles of Shoals Christmas Bird Count

It's once again time to sign up for the Isles of Shoals Christmas Bird Count.  In keeping with past years, we're casting a broad net on our date, and will pick a good weather day when it comes along, I'll send out a bunch of emails and make phone calls to try to fill the boat, and we'll split the cost evenly among participants. My plan is to use the Shining Star for the trip, as people with opinions overwhelmingly preferred the boat over the Gulf Challenger.  Based on feedback from last year's trip, I'm going to slightly decrease the number of people on board, and I'm hoping to keep the trip at or below $100 per person.

By filling out the form below, you are under no obligation to attend on days that you identify as available.  Likewise, saying you're available doesn't guarantee a spot, but I intend to run down the list in the order that you sign up.  You'll receive a few emails in the days leading up to the trip and it will give me a list of people to contact if and when the trip goes.  Feel free to reach out with any questions.

I've picked essentially every day that I'm not otherwise busy as a potential weather day, which can be found in the form below.  As in previous years, the trip will likely last about 5-6 hours and we'll spend about an hour on Star Island and visit the waters around the Isles of Shoals and Boone Island.  The exact timing may depend on tides, as nearly every aspect of this trip is better at high tide.

Hope to see you this winter!
