[Maine-birds] Sandwich Tern on Basket Island Sandbar at 1245 8 July

Marian Zimmerman and I were kayaking on Hills Beach side of Saco Bay and located an Adult non-breeding plumage Sandwich Tern. The bird was with 45 Bonaparte's Gulls, a few American Herring gulls, and two Common Terns. This very pale gray birds head was ' Groucho Marx ' black spike on the back half of the head. The bill was long, thin and black with a yellow tip. The longish legs were black and size was slightly larger than Common Tern. The bird was moved off the sandbar by the incoming tide. Many terns continue feeding in the area although I could not relocate the Sandwich by Kayak. Good hunting. Pat
