Re: [Maine-birds] Popham Beach-Piping Plovers-Least Terns-few migrant shorebirds

Earlier this morning, (roughly Dawn to 9:10 AM) at Popham, things were more lively.  A solo Am Oystercatcher was seen flying toward Wood Island at dawn (possibly Pond Island?). 
Shorebirds in the lagoon included:
Lst SP - 48
Semi SP - 28
SBDow - 53
LYLegs - 3
GYLegs - 1 (13 more at Fort Popham)
BBPlover - 1 (one?)
Semi Plov - 2
Spotted SP - 1 imm
Sanderling - 2 ad
No White-rumps.

At about 8:30 A.M., these birds all departed for other habs (Atkins Bay or up the Kennebec) leaving behind a few stragglers. 

Two (possibly three) Least Terns were fishing the lagoon and carrying small fish off to wherever. 
Common terns were scarce.  Later, a large group was seen in Atkins Bay, massed together off DeBery's Cove.

I birded Popham Beach SP this morning at low tide.  Very few migrant shorebirds (5 Least and 3 Semipalmated Sandpipers) but at least 16 Piping Plovers (including 5 young) and 11 Least Terns, including a "portlandica" Least Tern, meaning it's a first year, non-breeding bird in first basic plumage (white crown, dark carpal bar, black bill).

Otherwise quiet.
