I was able to stop at the end of Dennison Point in Cutler to scan Old Man Island at sunset on Saturday March 8. The light was not good for picking up alcids sitting on the cliffs of the island, but gannets were very visible diving behind the east side of the island.
Dennison Point is located in 'Little Machias' at the end of the east side of Little Machias Bay. The road to Dennison Point is off Rte. 191. Heading toward Cutler, take the first road to the right after you pass Little Machias Bay. There is a cemetery located next to the turn. Go to the end of the road and view from a turnaround. Keep your ears open for boreal chickadees.
You should be able to see alcids there throughout the year plus the occasional shearwater and Wilson's storm-petrel. The head of Little Machias Bay is usually productive. Large populations of whimbrels occur there from early July to September, either feeding in the intertidal zone or in the adjacent blueberry barrens. Scoters are usually present throughout the year.
Cool spot.
60 + Northern gannets - Could see the entire group because of the island
