Hi all,
My observations of note over the past seven days included:
- 1 Killdeer (FOY), Wolfe's Neck Farm, Freeport, 3/2 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk group).
- 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler (but no Palm Warbler), Saco Yacht Club, 3/3 (with Ed Hess).
- 1 drake Barrow's Goldeneye continues, Water Street, Saco, 3/3 (with Ed Hess).
- 1 Peregrine Falcon, York Harbor, 3/4 (with Kristen Lindquist).
- 4 Greater Scaup and 38 Harlequin Ducks (good count for here), Marginal Way, Ogunquit, 3/4 (with Kristen Lindquist).
- 1 SAVANNAH SPARROW, Webhannet Marsh along Bourne Avenue, Ogunquit, 3/4 (with Kristen Lindquist).
- 14 Horned Larks, Webhannet Marsh along Furbish Avenue, Ogunquit, 3/4 (with Kristen Lindquist).
- 1 female BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD continues from early winter, Rte 1, Wells, 3/4 (with Kristen Lindquist).
- 9 Red-winged Blackbirds (first flock of the year), here at the store, 3/4.
- 1 drake American Wigeon (first of spring), Weskeag Harbor, 3/5 (with Jeannette).
- 12 White-winged Crossbills, Owl's Head State Park, 3/5 (with Jeannette). Photos by Jeannette.
- 1 immature WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, Capisic Pond Park, Portland, 3/7 - too early for a migrant, this bird has presumably wintered locally. I've checked Capisic and the feeder it was near on at least 5 occassions this winter and I am unaware of any other observations from others. A great wintering record, if it had truly overwintered. My only two previous overwintering WCSP were of the Western subspecies, gambelli. This bird was of the expected Eastern subspecies leucophrys.
- the 6 CANVASBACKS continue in the Presumpscot River, best viewed from Rte 9, in Falmouth through week's end.
- the unknown, probable-Iceland-type-gull continues at Riverbank Park in Westbrook through week's end. More photos added to the gallery on our store's Facebook Page.
- a single HOARY REDPOLL continue to sporadically visit our Pownal yard within a diminishing flock of Common Redpolls (max this week was about 125, btu down to about 50 by week's end) through today. An apparent "GREENLAND" COMMON REDPOLL (subspecies rostrata) was last seen on 3/6. Photos of each: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.561795817183710.139561.198877036808925&type=3
