Hello all
About a month ago I issued a challenge to York county birders to log more birds into eBird on May 14th then Cumberland county birders as part of the Global Big Day. The original email can be found here. This is a friendly challenge and really is more a call for people to log the birds they see into eBird more than a real challenge. In fact, you can join in by just taking a few minutes to log the birds you find in your yard that day.
Since I sent out that email I have heard from a number of York County birders that they are going to take me up on that challenge. In fact, the York County Audubon is changing the date of their annual Birding Challenge to coincide with the Global Big Day. Please check their website and newsletter for more information.
But like any good drama the situation has changed.
While I live in Cumberland county, I teach 6th grade in York county. Over the last year I have been leading a young naturalist club at my school with the generous support of York County Audubon. They call themselves the Hardcore Birders and here is their website.
I have decided, as the issuer of the challenge, to take a group of those students out for the day in York county, not Cumberland county. I would love to see someone else pick up the mantle for Cumberland county, but even more I would love to see other birders taking the young people in their lives out birding on that day. Even if it is as simple as helping them to identify the birds in their yard. And a quick tip for Cumberland county birders looking for something to do on take day, check out what is happening at River Point in Falmouth, here.
So as a reminder for those of you birding in Cumberland or York county on May 14th, don't forget to log your sightings into eBird and if you happen to have a young person in your life, consider taking him or her along with you as bird.
