Today at noon, I found a flock of ten wayward Brant hanging out with the Canada Goose flock at Collins Pond in downtown Caribou. These little sea geese were jumpy and didn't seem particularly comfortable with the crowded environs of the pond. They did take the opportunity to catch a quick bite to eat on a neighboring lawn and then departed shortly thereafter. I was able to get some photos. These were only the sixth record, of which I am aware, for Brant in northern Maine. This was just the second time I've seen Brant in Aroostook County, the first occasion being almost seven years ago at Washburn (13 April 2009).
-- Other noteworthy waterfowl at Collins Pond was the continuing Cackling Goose I found on Friday and several handsome drake Northern Pintail.
Yesterday, a drake Barrow's Goldeneye was found with a dozen Common Goldeneye males in the wastewater lagoons at Caribou.
I've embedded a few photos of the geese in the eBird report: http://ebird.org/ebird/me/view/checklist?subID=S28861971
Pics of the goldeneye and more of the geese are on my Flickr page: https://www.flickr.com/photos/71911844@N04/with/26221430882/
