[Maine-birds] Eastern Prom Report - The Joys of Urban Birding

What a raw, wet and lovely day to look at some birds!

26 species on the Eastern Prom this morning. Top highlight was the pair of Fox Sparrows on the Mid-slope Trail behind the Water Treatment Plant, had some great looks at them foraging and chasing each other along the muddy path. Down by the East End Beach there was a group of Common Goldeneyes that were diving close to shore, plus a some Long-tailed Ducks, Buffleheads and a handsome looking Mallard pair.

Had a great example of the choppy wingbeats of a Cooper's Hawk as it passed overhead.

Song Sparrows were everywhere, but I wasn't able to pull any other Melospiza out of the small flocks foraging throughout the park. American Robins were also plentiful, picking their way through the sumac like a convention of pensive clergymen.

I wasn't able to spot any House Finches today, which was odd, and the number of Common Eiders was rather low.

And then there's the "urban" part! Stepped in dog poop twice, had a few good photo-ops disrupted by noisy joggers and their dogs, and spent a good twenty minutes helping a man who had passed out face-down on the trail after a generous breakfast of Milwaukee's Best Premium.

I love my patch.

Happy birding,
Ian C.
