Weather:Today was about as windy as expected. Luckily, due to the direction from the NW, the tall Pines took the brunt of the force. Skies cleared out significantly by late morning, with a few lenticular clouds hanging around. By late afternoon cloud cover began to increase slightly. Temps were cool,in the high 30s. Visibilty was excellent during the first hour, until the sun came out, causing some heat distortion.
Raptor Observations:The first slow day of counting, this season. Local birds retreated to the woods early on, only occasionally making an appearance. Vultures and Eagles struggled in the high winds. It wasn't a total loss, as we were able to put a few birds up on the board.
Non-raptor Observations:Pretty quiet at the summit, or bird sound was being drowned out by the roaring wind. 17 species were identified from the summit. Northbound birds included: 50 Canada Gees 5 Common Grackles 2 American Robins 1 Red-winged Blackbird 1 European Starling
Predictions:Tomorrow looks to be a better day for birds and birders alike. Winds should be lighter, at about 9-10mph from the west. Sun may give way to more clouds by mid to late afternoon, with temps climbing to a comfortable 48-50 degrees Fahrenheit. We shouldn't have much trouble getting back to double digits tomorrow.
