Visitors:Not many folks ventured up to the summit today. 7 people visited the hawkwatch.
Weather:Winds were out of the west most of the day today. They varied from light to gusty at times. A mostly clear sky gave way to clouds rather quickly in the morning, only to brighten up again for the afternoon. Temperatures reached a pleasant 50F.
Raptor Observations:It didn't seem like a busy day, but the Turkey Vultures helped pad the numbers. A little burst of Red-tailed Hawks in the afternoon with some nice looks overhead added a little fun. Local birds were not overly active, but a pair of Red-tailed Hawks and several adult Bald Eagles were seen regularly.
Non-raptor Observations:Blackbirds (especially Common Grackles) and Canada Geese were moving this morning. The highlight however was a total of 7 Sandhill Cranes. One lone bird was spotted midday, soaring overhead. Then in the late afternoon light, a flock of 6 were seen flying west to east. 30 birds were observed from the summit today. Those deemed migrating included: 246 Common Grackles 94 Canada Geese 64 Red-winged Blackbirds 33 blackbird sp. 6 American Robins 4 Eastern Bluebirds 1 Common Merganser 1 Killdeer 1 Pine Siskin
Predictions:Tomorrow should be partly sunny with temperatures in the mid-40s. The winds look to be pretty light, but northeast shifting to southeast. Not a great wind direction for our site unfortunately, but if they stay light enough, and shift more southerly early enough, we may see a few birds.
