Visitors:42 People stopped by today, 20 of whom were here for the Feathers Over Freeport hawkwatch workshop which Derek presented. It was an attentive crowd which was rewarded with a great little mix of raptor species passing by the summit. Local BW's made multiple passes along with a close Eagle. It was on of the first times I remember getting a Merlin going passed during the presentation. Thanks to everyone who stuck around to help scan the empty sky.
Weather:We started the day with a little sun for an hour or so before the clouds set in for good. Temps felt cool but in the 50's, likely from a little wind chill as we had more E and SE breezes coming off the ocean. Visibility was good.
Raptor Observations:Another slow day in the end. The morning had most of the migrants before the winds picked up. Local birds were active during the morning but once the afternoon breeze came up the flights really died down including the locals. Hawkwatch Junco spotted a fast flying Merlin for us in the afternoon as it shot over the summit.
Non-raptor Observations:31 species were seen or heard today. Northbound birds were few today. I guess everything decided to wait for the wet weather to pass instead of trying to get out ahead of it. northbound birds include: 26 Double-crested Cormorants. 6 Yellow-rumped Warblers 2 Red-winged Blackbirds.
Predictions:Wet and wild.
