[Maine-birds] Purple Gallinule

Anyone at your computer tonight (10/30 at 8:20 PM) and have a good photo of the Kennebunk bird that we could use in our column and you could send before 9:00 PM?

Thanks in advance if anyone is able!

Re: [Maine-birds] Two unexpected sightings

This is one of the things that makes birding so much fun--the unexpected.  A number of years ago on a rainy October day similar to this one, I looked out to see an adult Red-headed Woodpecker at my suet.  It's the only one I've ever seen in my yard, and only the 3rd one I've seen in Maine.  Alas, today there is  virtually nothing at my feeders:  the odd Chickadee, and that's about it.

Good deal for you.

Yesterday while on a quick jaunt to Pemaquid Point for seabirds got caught up with a flycatcher flying around the buildings - an Ash-throated flycatcher. Had great looks but only an iPhone and flat light!! Tom Lecky was with me as we followed the flycatcher hoping to get a photo - also saw a common yellowthroat hanging on the shrubbery on the rocks.

[Maine-birds] both species of kinglets and a hermit thrush.

This morning well over a dozen kinglets fluttered into our yard and foraged as if famished.
Both species were present, with over a dozen golden crowned and at least 3 ruby crowned. Both numbers are likely undercounts as we couldn't confidently ID the birds at the tops of our very tall Norway spruces where much of the action was.
A beautifully plumaged Hermit thrush was quietly observing the action from a bare branch.
Unexpected!

[Maine-birds] Rustlewood Farm Kittery/Eliot

Big day for sparrows at Rustlewood farm yesterday.  Conservative estimate of 75.  Mostly swamp sparrows. Additionally Lincoln's sparrow, Song sparrows, Savannah sparrows, White-throated sparrows, White-crowned sparrows.  I also had 5 ruby-crowned kinglets and a large flock of Pipits.
I started the morning at the Nubble and had a pair of Black Guillemnot which were pretty far out.

[Maine-birds] Re: Pelagic trip to Cashes Ledge (8 Oct)

Just passing along a quick update that the Cashes Ledge pelagic trip was rescheduled to this Saturday, October 14th and the weather is looking great. The trip is confirmed to run but there are plenty of spaces left; Zack said people can pay with cash/check/etc on the dock if anyone is making a last minute decision.

Updated info on the trip is available here: https://myemail.constantcontact.com/Cashes-Ledge-Whale-and-Seabird-Cruise-.html?soid=1130190537992&aid=TJifM5DzxV4

Re: [Maine-birds] Re: Unusual call at Mt. Cutler, Hiram.... poss. Violaceous Jay??

There was a Goshawk near the same spot on Sept. 24, so a Blue Jay being murdered sounds like the most probable answer.  Canada Jay records are few and far between in the area, although possible.  The call was unchanging, constant for about 4 minutes and definitely louder than any of the Blue Jays that were around.  Listening to the recording it sounds like they're perturbed about something although if they're scolding a predator they're not as frantic as they usually sound around a hawk or owl.  Scouring audio files I found no exact matches, but Merlin's suggestion of Violaceous Jay was actually the closest to my ears, which might explain the app's ID.

Walking my dog on a snowmobile trail between Mt.
