[Maine-birds] Saw-whet Owl and Bobolinks

We added a new yard bird this evening - a Saw-whet Owl!

Also we have found Bobolinks in several unmowed fields on Highway 1 between Cherryfield and Milbridge. Since this is our first spring-to-summer "season" here we're unsure if these fields will be mowed or not - but it's nice to see the skylarking Bobolinks and hear their song as we drive by with the windows down on a warm afternoon!

[Maine-birds] Fwd: [NS-RBA] Zone-tailed Hawk photos

Hello all,

I am forwarding an email from Richard Stern of a remarkable Nova Scotia sighting of a Zone-tailed Hawk (the second ever). ZT Hawks soar with their wings in a shallow dihedral like a Turkey Vulture. With all the western rarities showing up this spring, it may be worth checking any Turkey Vultures you see.

Here are some representative photos of the bird flying over our camp on Brier Island today, seen by Rick Whitman and myself. As previously mentioned, it was flying in the same manner as a T.Vulture, and seemed about 50% larger than the accompanying Broad-wings (7). The flock circled overhead then flew off over Pond Cove in an easterly direction.

This resident of Arizona, Mexico and points south is the 2nd record for NS, the 1st being in the Musquedobit Valley in Fall of 1976 (fide Ian McLaren).

I added some other "good" birds seen there today.

[Maine-birds] Common Nighthawk

I have had a Common Nighthawk flying over my house in Cape Elizabeth calling in broad daylight last two days. Weird. Went to Wells Beach today to admire the Least Tern Colony. Much activity. And also several Piping Plovers on nests apparently. What a wonderful Maine beach experience. Just go through Laudholm to the beach and you will have terms and plovers pretty much to yourself.

[Maine-birds] Agamenticus & Lindsay Pond 5/31

I went up to Mt. Agamenticus yesterday in hopes of seeing the Indigo Bunting and saw it late in the day.

Eastern Pewee (both in photo set - please correct me if I'm wrong about the Phoebe/Pewee - thanks)

Turkey Vultures - I counted 12 but the most I saw at the same time was 2 so don't know how many different birds I saw

Cedar Waxwing

Male Downy Woodpecker

Dark-eyed Junco

Heard and saw several different warblers with yellow as their primary color but wasn't able to ID them (still a novice)

Chipping sparrows

House sparrows

Cardinals

Robins

House Finches
