[Maine-birds] Chuck-will’s-widow - NO - Wells

Leon Mooney and I tried for the CWWI on Laudholm Rd in Wells, ME last night (7/3) from predawn to about 9:45 pm without any luck. This bird was found and reported by Trevor Persons the night before (7/2). We checked the first field on the right that Trevor mentioned and also drove to the end of the road adjacent to Laudholm Farm. Although there were no calling nightjars, the lightning bug show was worth it!

[Maine-birds] Request to Franklin County birders

Greetings, birders,

I’m hoping to get in touch with birders who are residents of Franklin County, regarding an upcoming hearing on a huge proposal that, if passed, would have a negative impact on bird and wildlife habitat.

Please don’t enter into a discussion on this list – the list manager was gracious in allowing me to post this request. Please email me privately if you live in Franklin County and would like to know more.

Thanks, folks!

Good birding,

[Maine-birds] Eider chicks

Ocean Ave at Biddeford Pool had three groups of Eiders with chicks.  One had 2 very downy chicks, one had four and the last set were bigger and had seven chicks.  A skunk prevented me from examining Great Pond and the Spiritual Center.

[Maine-birds] Kennebago/Rangeley/Mooselookmeguntic Atlasing

Hello All
Just spent a week Working (volunteering) on Maine's Breeding Bird Atlas. Have waited (impatiently) 20 years to do my second.

Highlights were Gray Jays in two family groups, confirmed Palm Warbler, singing Tennessee and Cape May Warbler. Singing Yellow-bellied Flycatcher in two blocks. Mourning Warbler in two blocks. Confirmed Merlin (with young) diving on confirmed Northern Goshawk (carrying food).
50 species tallied in two blocks and entries in five other.
A little early for confirming warblers. Mostly singing makes and number carrying food or doing distraction displays increasing as we left.
Fun time.
Have not tallied total species yet but since we were mostly in wooded habitats and mostly out of cell phone range (a recent habitat indicator) we were pleased at having only a few misses of expected birds. Something to look forward to for next year now that I have scoped out habitats and access in about ten blocks.
Consumer Reports validated this week our choice of Repel Lemon Eucalyptus but you will still want to cover everything you can.

Confirmations of insect eaters up there should be easier this week from my observations.

[Maine-birds] Maine Bird Atlas map with hotspots

If you've ever wanted to see how eBird hotspots overlap the Maine Bird Atlas blocks...here is a map for you: https://arcg.is/0P1u4q. If you click on a hotspot, it will show which block contains it (though of course the actual extent of the hotspot may cross over to another block), and will give you a link to the observations for both the atlas block and the hotspot. The priority blocks that haven't been adopted yet are highlighted in blue, and conserved land is highlighted in brown, too. If you click on "Contents" you can add aerial imagery.

This is helping me plan birding trips with the Bird Atlas in mind, and I hope others can get use out of it too. The data come from eBird and Maine IFW, mostly.

[Maine-birds] Chuck-will’s-widow WELLS now

I'm staying at Alheim Commons at Wells Reserve, and was just awakened 5 minutes ago by a CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW calling across the street (recording attached). This would be if from Route 1 you drive east on Laudholm Rd maybe a tenth of a mile or so, until there is an open field on your right (south side of road); bird calling from presumably edge of woods at back (south side) of field). Not calling presently, may quit soon as dawn approaches.
