[Maine-birds] Re: Unknown bird call

I was trying to ID a new-to- me call last week and it was similar.... it ended up being some kind of warning call! Still unknown small bird was alerting to a Sharp Shinned hawk in its area. The hawk... Juvenile.... was easy to see once I started to look around the unknown caller that was upset.

[Maine-birds] Unknown bird call

I recorded this at 11:38 am on Aug 25. I live on Harpswell Neck near Mitchell Field in a wooded neighborhood along shoreline.

I've asked a few people and no one has been able to ID.

Maybe a juvenile that hasn't learned its proper calls?

[Maine-birds] Re: Common Nighthawks

I had a remarkable amount on July 31st at the retention ponds at Mount Desert Island High School. 20 -30 swooping all over the place. It was really thrilling. Previous to that date, in the evenings... I had not seen any.

There were thunderstorms to the North, so maybe they were flying more deliberately to get out of the path of the storms?

Additionally, has anyone else found that they missed seeing Common Nighthawks at the normal time this year?

Looking at eBird graphs, this species has moved through earlier in August the last two years with fewer sightings. The orange line bellow is 2022.

[Maine-birds] Global Shorebird Counts and World Shorebird Day!

Hi all--

I want to remind everyone that today marks the start of this year's Global Shorebird Count as part of World Shorebird Day. We encourage everyone to share eBird checklists that contain any shorebirds between today and September 7 with World Shorebirds Day.

Last year, 148 species of shorebirds around the world were recorded on 1,615 checklists from 1,237 locales! It is a huge and powerful snapshot of the state of the world's shorebirds on a single day each year. Be part of it!
