I had an interesting experience with a female hummingbird last Saturday in Indian Township. I completed a point count and jumped back into my car when a female hummingbird hovered in the passenger window looking at me. It then flew into my car and continued to examine my red shirt for about 30 seconds. It then passed by my nose and out the drivers side window, after which, it crossed back over my car hood then visited two buttercups for nectar.
Last Tuesday, a clerk at the Machiasport town office reported a recently fledged cardinal in her yard. That was a first for her. She also had a red-bellied woodpecker at her feeder all winter into late spring.
Roque Island is inundated with family groups of black-throated green warblers and blackburnian warblers in the dense red spruce forests. The number of family groups increased over the weekend according to George Herrick who is visiting the island.
