Sprinkles and rain in the morning equate to "bad beach day" "good bird day". Not many folks about to bother birds on "New Island" or the Lagoon. Two year-birds and a patch-bird. Not too shabby.
Two Am Oystercatchers were foraging on algae/sand flats in the lagoon at mid-flood. Heard before seen, uttering a single-syl. note. They split (possibly due to my presence on "New Island") and were last seen flying together down Seawall Beach, where they were probably picked up by Peter or Gordon, if they were birding this A.M.
Then found three Least Terns. Solo bird foraging over the mouth of Morse River, later seen flying out to sea. A pair then appeared, spending most of the time casing New Island, occasionally landing near the wrack line, and at one point engaged in aerial courtship flight. One of these seen carrying small fish. Did not see a handoff, however. I see one or two of these almost every year at Popham, but they are invariably one-day wonders. These seemed to be scouting the area. The Piping Plover Wardens will no doubt be aware of these.
The isolated piping plover nest survived last night's 10.5' high tide, amazingly. It must have been very close.
Small group of mixed shorebirds remain: 16 BBPlovers, 1 SBDow, 6 Semi Sands, 1 Semi Plover, few Willets. Small group of mostly young Bonies (25) and the orange wing-tagged RBGull remains.
