[Maine-birds] Odyssey pelagic today - few seabirds but a Pacific Loon

Jan Pierson, Denny Abbott and I went out on the Odyssey this morning.

Seabirds generally slim:

Cory's Shearwater: 3
Great: 2
Manx and Sooty: 0
Wilson's Storm-Petrel: 80
N. Gannet: 20

Plenty of Tree Swallows migrating over the water: 60+ for the day.

The surprise of the day was a basic plumage Pacific Loon sitting on the water as the boat returned to Portland.  Small loon with rounded crown and nape, slim straight bill.  Generally a delicate loon.

The face was largely dark gray-black with only a small amount of white on the lower cheek and chin; white extended down center of throat.  I didn't see a chin strap.  Others might have but didn't mention it.  The back and nape were dark, almost black.  The flanks were evenly but obscurely white along the waterline but were inconspicuous in the slightly choppy water.  No white patch on lower flank. Black bill to my eye.

Best, Peter
