Comments: Today the Fong family spent the morning adding to the species list of MDI and learning about the avifauna of the region. First time birder Betsey made great headway in learning how and where to find the diversity of species possible this time of year. It was a beautiful morning. Good to be back from Cuba and looking forward to spring migration.

Comments: Pat Hughes and JC (Bob) Murphy from Martha's Vineyard. This has to be the most amazing story. It turns out the JC Murphy was the only boat on the water in Woods Hole Massachusetts when HURRICANE BOB struck. It produced 125 mph winds. Bob recounted his peril and story about a day that I will never forget because we were on the opposite side of Devils Foot on shore, watching him on his boat as he rode out the storm. He had removed all of his clothing out of fear of getting caught up in ropes. We had no idea that the main storm would devastate Woods Hole the way it did but the strongest winds were recorded there. With my 35mm camera rolling, we photographed boats coming off mornings and then slamming into the back of homes on Penzance Point. J C (Bob) Murphy made the decision to take his boat, the "Helen M" behind Devils Foot Island but the winds and the tide were too much. He recounted that he finally made the decision to beach on Devils Foot by ramming his boat on shore where he jumped off. The boat was tossed onto Penzance Point where the owner of the point home came to rescue J C and took him in after the storm. I spent the day with a large format Video Recorder documenting the removal of many boats by helicopter from the dock. It was an exhilarating event in my life. I do not remember if we knew JC had lived but after the storm Louie Kerr and I walked around the Point after spending the high part of the storm in the marine Biological Laboratory where I had worked. The devastation was amazing and JC's boat was up on Penzance Point along with almost every boat in Great harbor. It was amazing to talk to Bob and I look forward to meeting him again.
