Hi everyone:
As has been covered, the messages that went out earlier today with the subject lines: "why are you ignoring me?." and "Do you feel weird today?." are spam. No one should click on the links within those messages. As Ron said, his personal email was compromised but should be fixed now. I've taken the posts off the Maine-birds website but I recommend you delete these if they were already sent to you or do not click the links if you are viewing the messages on any other digest sites (aba, sialia, surfbirds, etc..).
Google does a very good job detecting and blocking spam to this group. There are surprisingly regular spam attempts from outside posters to this group and many are easy to block. This one got through because it was from an 'approved' member (thanks for you nearly 5 years of membership, Ron!) whose personal email was hacked. Most spam should be easily recognizable but here are a few tips for recognizing potentially malicious posts:
1) Any messages through Maine-birds that are not about birds in Maine or appear 'personal' should be suspect.
2) Do not click on any links to sites that you do not recognize. With hyperlinked text, you can hover your mouse over the text to see the address that link will lead to. A good practice is to do your own searches of links, especially with news items, that are sent to you.
3) Do not open attachments from people you do not know. I highly recommend people do not send any attachments through this group anyways. Please upload photos to a host site (or put them in your eBird checklist) and share that link.
Thank you all for your participation on the group and dealing with the occasional speed bump.
Good birding,
Doug Hitchcox
