[Maine-birds] Western Grebe - Sears Isand

There was a Western Grebe (WEGR) this morning off the south end of Sears Island, Waldo Co.  Seen from the spot where the Blue Trail hits the shore.

If anyone wants to try for this bird and are unfamiliar with the area, Sears Island is at the end of Sears Island Road, off HWY1, and north of the village of Searsport.  Take Sears Island Road out to the causeway and park near the gate at the north end of the island.  There is plenty of parking space along the causeway and it is a good area to scan for ducks, etc…  You have to hike about 2 miles from there to get to the south end.  Walk the paved road up to the unpaved, cell tower road leading off to the left.  Go nearly to the end of the cell tower road until you see markings for the Blue Trail and take that another quarter mile or so to the shore.  The bird was seen from there looking towards the north end of Isleboro.  There is plenty of ice so wear grippers on your boots.

Alternatively, you can walk the shoreline around the island at a lower tide.  It was near high tide this morning though.

The island causeway, Searsport Harbor, and Stockton Harbor would be good areas (and much easier to access) to check for this bird in case it moves around.

Good Birding,
John
