This morning I watched an adult Peregrine Falcon pursuing pigeons over downtown Gardiner. It made some amazing stoops down into a large pigeon flock as they tried to wheel away about 100 yards over Cobbossee Steam near the local Subway store. The Peregrine hit one of the pigeons who looked like it would drop into the stream but it recovered and made its way under the bridge to escape. At another point the Peregrine was high up and a flock of about 50 pigeons kept descending toward the ground in tighter and tighter circles like water flowing down a drain. They got so low I thought they might just all land in the Hannaford’s parking lot there but just before they would have hit the ground they all broke away back towards downtown.
After missing the last bird, the Peregrine flew up on to the top of the very tall church steeple on the hill just behind McDonald’s where it has remained for at least 30 minutes. If you are passing through Gardiner, check out the steeple!
