[Maine-birds] red-breasted nuthatch

I know last year's incursion is over, but I was happy to have a single red-breasted nuthatch enjoying a sunflower luncheon here today on the Warren-Waldoboro border.

[Maine-birds] Spring returning to Belgrade Lakes region - COGR, TUVU, RNDU, and RWBL.

Observed a handful of species returning to the area this afternoon/evening (2/28):

- While standing in the parking lot of the Maine Lakes Resource Center in the Belgrade Lakes village, I had a single Common Grackle calling from the silver maples across the road. I turned around to also see 2 Turkey Vultures soaring high over Mill Stream and moving southward.

- I stopped briefly at the south end of Messalonskee Lake while heading home. There I had (4) Ring-necked Ducks in with Canada Geese, Am. Black Ducks, Mallards, and Hooded Mergansers in the expanding area of open water off the bridge (where Belgrade Stream outlets).

- I've been spotting a pair of Red-tailed Hawks in the fields just east of the intersection of Route 3 and Riverside Drive in the Augusta. I've seen both birds within a quarter mile of one another during both my evening and morning commute. This evening was no exception and both birds were present.

- Just east of where I've been seeing the red-tails, I spotted a small dark bird perched in a tree over a small cattail marsh behind Lapointe Lumber in Augusta. Upon closer inspection, I found that it was a single (and very vocal) Red-winged Blackbird. My first RWBL last year was on 2/28/17 so I was listening for them today!

[Maine-birds] Fish Crows in Bangor, 28 Feb

Hi Everyone,

While walking my daughter around the Little City neighborhood this afternoon, I was surprised to hear several Fish Crows calling. There have been a handful of reports in the area the last few years, including some from last fall, but they are sill quite rare around here. These were my first in the state!

Good birding!

While searching for a dead Razorbill that was reported to me yesterday, I also happened upon a deceased Murre that had recently washed up in the wrack line on Pine Point Beach. The Razorbill is banded. I'll pass them along to Audubon.

One male RWBB at my feeder this morning and probably the same one in the late afternoon.
Also this afternoon a Red Bellied woodpecker eating seed at a feeder.
Two people told me they have seen a Snowy Owl this week, eating a muskrat on the McDonough lawn in morning and flying over the meadow at dusk.

4 Dovekies within 5 feet of shore, one photobombing razorbill, and a Snowy Owl today walking along the waters edge in Prouts Neck, Scarborough.  You can park at Scarborough Beach and walk to the cliff trail along the beach.  All of the birds were seen on the south facing part of the cliffs.  Nice alternative to driving down to the Cliff House for those of you who live around Portland.

[Maine-birds] binoc repair

Hi everyone-I am looking for some guidance in binocular repair. I have a 15 year old pair of Swift 8x44 Audubon binoculars that need some rehabbing. I tried doing it thru Swift several years ago and did not get good results; is there anywhere in the state that does repairs or does anyone know of a very good "rehabber"somewhere? These were always my favorites so want to try one more time to get them back in my hands again! Please reply off list and thank you in advance...Sharon in West Kennebunk

also on Wednesday, heard the doves for the first time since winter began (they have been silent since then)

today, hairy, downy, and red-bellied woodpeckers, goldfinches, the cardinal pair. a nuthatch. a few chickadees, and the juncos  (so many this winter--wonderful)

[Maine-birds] Dovekies and murres at Cliff House late yesterday and Turkey Vulture

Allison and I made a late day run down to the Cliff House in York yesterday (2/24) and had the pleasure of watching two Dovekies and two Thick-billed Murres up close and personal from the northern outlook. We didn't really try to scan the rest of the area to see if there were more as we just enjoyed watching the ones in front of us until we had to leave. Very cool to see them close together to see the amazing size difference.

On the way down we also saw a Turkey Vulture over I-95 in Kennebunk.

[Maine-birds] Spring Arrival Date Project

Hello all,

Many of you have contributed spring arrival dates to the monitoring project I have been running since 1994. I have decided to end the project with the 2017 season. I am grateful to the many birders who have contributed over 63,000 arrival dates to the project.

I recently published a paper on the entire 24-year dataset. You can download a copy at: http://web.colby.edu/whwilson/publications/

The summary paper is the second one in the list. Click on the reprint link to download a pdf copy. You can also download copies of six other papers from the project by scrolling down the list.

If you wish to see the 2017 data, you can use this web app to explore the results: https://hobbes.colby.edu/arrival/

The web app provides lots of flexibility to allow one to explore the dataset.

Best,

Herb

[Maine-birds] MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND REPORT

Things have been fairly static since my last report save for two fronts.

First: ALCIDS, primarily RAZORBILLS, have begun to accumulate in the area surrounding the island. No real rafting or large concentrations seen yet but lots of small flocks shifting about.

Second: The SNOWY OWL traffic here this week seems to be a strong indication that, as has been suggested elsewhere, the owls are beginning their northward migration.
We've had at least 3 Snowys on the island this week.

The 1st stayed at least 3 days It was last observed flying towards Grand Manan on Thursday evening.

The 2nd was here for an uncertain period but not more than 12 hours and likely far less. It was last seen as a half consumed carcass being carried away by an EAGLE.

The 3rd Snowy was accidently flushed from among boulders this afternoon. At dark it was ground-perched about 200 yards from our living room window where it had been since my disturbance.
I thought that it might move off when "our" RAVENS tried to harass it. When the Ravens realized that the owl wasn't at all intimidated and actually might be happy to eat one of them, they took their roadshow elsewhere.

You've hear about Hundred Year Eggs?
Not truly aged a century but still they can be several months old and quite an edible delicacy when done correctly.
Well it seems that Ravens may have their own version of that Ming Dynasty recipe.
Crows and their allies are well known for their penance for hiding food and for their ability to remember and retrieve their hoards. None are better than Ravens but we seldom see both the hiding and recovery.
Friday afternoon, after the Ravens abandoned their hazing of the Snowy Owl, both returned to poking around the landscape. One of the Ravens decided to examine a grass clump that I knew contained cached food and I saw it eating what proved to be a Tern egg.
The Raven flew off with another whole egg and I found two more in the cache.
Now do the math.
Terns laid those eggs in early summer. They were abandoned, then found by the Raven & cached in late summer. It's now late February.
Those eggs rival any Pidan at 7-8 months old.
Yum yummy!!

I've been to Hatch Hill in the past when they've limited the number of birders allowed in at one time. Not sure if this is still the case or not. Anyway, it's possible that if a lot of birders show up tomorrow, not all may get in.

[Maine-birds] SLATY-BACKED GULL - Augusta, 2/23

This afternoon I got to join a group of folks that work for City of Augusta and to look at making the Hatch Hill Landfill more accessible to birders. This location has become increasingly popular, especially for eagle photographers, so we'll be working on a new parking area for birders and a designated birding space.

While birding wasn't the primary purpose of the visit, I'm relieved I brought my camera along because as we walked around the fence I noticed an odd looking dark-mantled gull flying over the active section of the landfill. 16 seconds and 40 frames later I lost the gull but thought the photos looked good for Slaty-backed. My apologies for not posting from the field but I wasn't 100% at the time; I stayed until close (4PM) and wasn't able to relocated the bird although the birds were especially flighty. Here is my eBird list with some of the photos: ebird.org/me/view/checklist/S43120750

***Accessing the Landfill***
First, the landfill is only open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:00AM to 4:00PM. Do not enter the landfill outside of these hours.
You must sign in at the booth before the scales as you enter. It would be good to double-check with them on where to park, generally there is space "out of the way" just past the recycling area on the right but they had us move up towards the brush piles to the left later in the day.
DO NOT ENTER THE GATED AREA. Birders are welcome to bird up to the fence but should not enter the gated area, even if there is not equipment being used at the time. Because of how the trash is currently stacked, best viewing was from the fence on the western (northwestern) side of the active area.
Also, no smoking is allowed… You might blow the whole place up and scare the bird away.
My best advice is use common sense. Be nice to the staff. I'm thrilled they are looking into making this a more birder-friendly location so let's not ruin it before we get that chance.

Good birding,

Nearly every winter I see one land up in the Bittersweet and eat the berries.  Even sillier looking is when the Turkeys go up there and eat them (the bittersweet, not the woodpeckers).
